A revised, updated and expanded 'Centenary Edition' of The Rugby Rebellion: The Divide of League and Union. Book excerpt: In March 2008, Rugby League celebrates 100 years of history in this country. Long known as the greatest game of all it is the dominant code in New South Wales and Queensland, and in recent years it has gained a foothold in Victoria, and beyond. This book is the story of the game over those years: the great eras and the great games; the great players from Dally Messenger to Andrew Johns; the always passionate (and sometimes bitter) rivalry of the State of Origin games; the overseas tours; and in recent years, the Super League turmoil, through to the present era. And it looks ahead to increased competition from other football codes It is a popular yet authoritative account, aimed at the general reader, not simply the dedicated fan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greatest Game of All or Rugby League as it is known to some has given me nearly a half a century of pleasure and a little pain. In 1966 at the ripe old age of 6 I was introduced to our game when my Uncle Harry moved into the bedroom I shared with my younger brother in a 2 bedroom fibro joint in Rockdale(Dragon Territory). Harry was playing lower grades for Jack Gibson s Roosters and went on to play for St George in the 1971 Grand Final against my other front rower mate John Sattler and his Rabbitoh s. By the age of 9 I had memorized every player in the Big League magazine. The game became my obsession. Even if I had not been lucky enough to play over 100 games in the best competition in the world(arguably in any sport) Rugby League was in my blood. As a Rothmans Medal winner (the official player of the year award in 1983 succeeded by The Dally M Medal) I have always been aware of the history of our great game and its effect on society especially in the northern states of Australia. Apart from obtaining a Law degree at Sydney University I studied the Politics in Sport while completing my Arts Degree at Macquarie University. I believed our game was ahead of sports like baseball, gridiron and basketball that relied heavily on statistics to rate their great players. Ours is a game of passion made for the blue collar working classman relying on guts and determination not on how many yards and minutes someone makes or plays. However as we get older we all like to dig deep into history and see who had the ability and drive to play even one game in the toughest competition playing the greatest game of all. This book does what none other has attempted to do tell a story using numbers and statistics about our great game. It is something every player and fan would do well to study. Stephen Kane the author of this book could be a reincarnation of Stephen Harold Gascoigne, better known as Yabba whose statue stands proudly at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Yabba was known for his knowledgeable witticisms shouted loudly from The Hill , a grassy general admissions area of the SCG. A lot like Yabba Kaney can be found every winter Sunday on the hill at Greenfield Park Albury(or away in Junee, Temora or Wagga) cheering his beloved Thunder to victory in the Group 9 Premiership loudly and clearly from 10 am to 5.30pm. In his spare time since breaking his back 7 years ago he has collected statistics on players in the NSWRL(now known as the NRL) dating back to 1908. The first words Kaney said to me was I have every Rugby League Week ever published as he showed me his EELS tattoo . You got sin binned once in your career at North Sydney Oval in 1983 or was it 1984? ? I knew I was in the company of a Rugby League tragic. This study of our game will help all of us who love the game and those of us lucky enough to have played it a better insight into the players of the greatest game of all from the top to the bottom. Written by Mike Eden, who played 110 Games for Manly, Easts, Parramatta and Gold Coast, is Gold Coast Player Number 1, and Won the Dally M award for Player of the Year in 1983

Book excerpt: Delving into the 100 greatest club rivalries in Australian premiership history, Rugby League Rivalries encompasses the most notable feuds, derbies, conflicts, matches and controversies in the code's 107-season narrative. Whether based on proximity, important finals encounters, wild on-field battles, off-field disputes, class and demographic differences or star players moving from one club to another, you will find them here, in vivid detail. Every NRL team and several extinct clubs are represented - from bitter century-old rivalries between foundation clubs such as South Sydney and Sydney Roosters, to long-running local derbies like the lively Manly-North Sydney and St George-Cronulla rivalries, and competition between more recently admitted clubs including Brisbane and Manly. Every Grand Final and premiership decider, along with hundreds of finals clashes, is covered. Rugby League Rivalries tells the history of every club in its most important context - the great matches they played and their competition with other clubs. This book is for every Rugby League fan, from the casual follower to the history buff. Will Evans was born in Queensland in 1981 and is now a freelance writer based in Christchurch, New Zealand. His other books are A Short History of Rugby League in Australia, A History of State of Origin and The Book of NRL Lists (co-authored with NickTedeschi).

Book excerpt: Rugby has always been a sport with as much drama off the field as on it. For every thrilling last-minute Jonny Wilkinson drop-goal to win the world cup or Jonah Lomu rampage down the touchline for a try, there has been a split, a feud or a controversy. The Oval World is the first full-length history of rugby on a world scale – from its origins in the village-based football games of medieval times up to the globalised sport of the twenty-first century, now played in well over 100 countries. It tells the story of how a game played in an obscure English public school became the winter sport of the British Empire, spread to France, Argentina, Japan and the rest of the world and commanded a global television audience of over four billion for the last world cup final. And how American football – and other games such as Australian, Canadian and Gaelic football – emerged from rugby and highlight just how much the modern gridiron game owes to its English cousin. Featuring the great moments in the game's history and its great names – such as Jonah Lomu, David Duckham, Serge Blanco, Billy Boston and David Campese alongside Rupert Brooke, King George V, Boris Karloff, Charles de Gaulle and Nelson Mandela – The Oval World investigates just what it is about rugby that enables it to survive and thrive in countries with very different traditions and cultures. This is the the definitive world history of a truly global rugby.

Book excerpt: From its earliest days as a game of rough and tumble with few rules, the game of rugby union in Australia owes its very existence to the dedication and commitment of the members of the New South Wales Rugby Union and its flagship team, the Waratahs. From the battle over rules which eventually led to the formation of Australian Rules Football as a separate code, to the lure of pay-for-play professionalism of rugby league, and to the cessation of all rugby in Australia during World War I, the New South Wales Rugby Union kept the game alive. Guardians of the Game is the fascinating story of Rugby Union's origins and development in New South Wales and Australia, of the people and players, of pioneers like the Arnold brothers and of latter-day rugby superstars like Nick Farr-Jones and David Campese. As the 2005 Waratahs lay claim to their first-ever Super-12 win, it is fitting that this history of Australia's oldest rugby club be published, and that the deeds of the men and women of the New South Wales Rugby Union who kept the rugby flame burning through the game's darkest hours be recognised.

Never before has the game been covered in such comprehensive, year-by-year detail. The book includes not just the story of the first 100 years of the Sydney (now NRL) premiership, but also the many great competitions that have been staged across Australia. As well, the often controversial and always colourful history of matches between Queensland and New South Wales are featured, from the inaugural game in 1908 to the State of Origin battles of today. And Australia's pivotal place in international rugby league - most notably in epic Test matches against Great Britain, on Kangaroo tours of England and France, and in World Cup, World Series and Tri-Series tournaments - is celebrated in word and picture. Australian rugby league's 100 greatest players of all time - from Dally Messenger to Darren Lockyer, as chosen by the ARL especially for the centenary year - are revealed and profiled in the book. And special sections highlight all the famous matches, controversies and incidents that have made league's history so colourful over the last century.
