Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Australia The aim of the author has been to make the book answer such questions as might reasonably be put to it by an intelligent reader, who will of course have regard to the limitations imposed by its size; and also to present a picture of the phases through which the country has passed. At the same time it is hoped that due importance has been given to personality. History is a record of the doings of men living in communities, not of blind, nerve less forces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Making of Australian History, Vol. 1 of 2 In a work of this kind it has not been found pos sible, and it has not been desired, to suppress my personality. But my wish has been that my public actions should be placed in the full light of day, and left naked and unscreened to public criticism. What ever my work may amount to, it cannot be made more by words from me or from too tolerant friends, and it cannot be made less by the comments of adversaries. It must stand or be swept away according to the nature of its substance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aldine History of Queensland, Vol. 1 No country in the world has been more extensively written about than Australia, and yet it is a difficult matter to find upon our bookshelves any work that will give the inquirer of this or other lands an adequate idea of the history, resources, enterprises, and development of the country partly because most that has been published is now out of print, and partly for the reason that writers have confined themselves to only one phase of colonial life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections of Australia and Elsewhere, 1842-1914 Show that Colonists, though living far away from the land of their origin, still remember the Mother Country, and regard her with the affection due to her by her children. The later portion, it is hoped, may prove of interest as representing the thought and action of an average man who has had to face problems, some of which have been and, in all probability, will continue to be, the subject of discussion and legislative action in the Parliament of Great Britain. In all that I did or attempted in legislation, my desire was not blindly to follow any leader, but, to do what I believed to be best for the country of my adoption, apart from mere party considerations. Throughout my parliamentary career, which began more than forty years ago, I have been more or less handicapped by the necessity of maintaining myself and those dependent on me by my professional earnings. Often when I would willingly have de voted all my thought to the solution of difficult questions I have had to scratch for sixpences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Australian Discovery and Colonisation The intention of the writer of these outlines of the history of Australian discovery, settlement, and progress, is not to. Give a history of every voyage for Australian discovery, or a detail of every thing which has taken place in the progress of Australian colonisation, but to convey in a popular form such a general knowledge of the discovery and settlement of his, country as every Australian youth ought to possess; and to enable teachers to place before their pupils interesting and instructive lessons in a branch of education which has been hitherto almost, if not entirely, neglected. In order to sim plify and condense as much as possible the matter contained in the following chapters, the writer has thought it best not to encumber the text with authorities, references, and notes. Personal anecdotes, and matters of merely individual or private interest, have been introduced or alluded to very sparingly, and only in cases where they were considered necessary to illustrate or explain the condition of society, or to afford an insight into the characters of public men, public movements, or political changes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of Australasia: A Brief History of the Origin and Development of the British Dominions in the South Pacific This book is an effort to give a brief but accurate account of the winning and making of Australasia. It may seem that a disproportionate amount of space has been given to the earlier history of Australia. For this there are several reasons. A good deal of new material bearing on the early periods of settlement and of the events that preceded settlement has only recently been made available. The fact that the French took formal possession of part of Australia, for instance, has appeared in no previous history. Then, apart from the special interest that attaches to the beginnings of development, the early days present very much of historical interest. What may be called the middle period of Australian history is comparatively featureless except to the specialist. It was a time of peaceful progress and development. Except for the story of e ploration and for one or two outstanding events there is not much of it to be said in a general history. In some of the colonies important constitutional questions were raised and dealt with, but in a work of this kind it is impossible to treat of these in detail. With the years 1914 - 1918 the case is different. Australia was then drawn into the main stream of world events, and the years of war were crowded with happenings of great magnitude. An attempt has been made to sketch the main outlines of this period, and to indicate the changes in outlook which they caused. But to attempt to deal in detail with the war efforts of Australia would be outside the scope of this book. To treat the matter fully and in its proper perspective it would be necessary to give some thing like a new history of the war.
