Book excerpt: A remarkably in-depth account of the development of Latin from its earliest known forms, this book, apart from its intrinsic interest, will give those embarking on a study of Latin a better understanding of the vagaries of its declensions and inflexions, showing how they arose from the language's natural development. Furthermore, if the student works through this fascinating and scholarly study, they will effortless acquire a large vocabulary of essential Latin words. The text has been scrupulously proofed to ensure that it is as wholly unmarked and free from defects as it was when first published in 1895. W. M. Lindsay is also the author of "The Syntax of Plautus", another first-rate work of scholarship.

Book excerpt: Beginning in Rome around 600 BC, Latin became the language of the civilized world and remained so for more than two millennia. French, Spanish, Italian, and Romanian are among its progeny and it provides the international vocabulary of law and life science. No known language, including English - itself enriched by Latin words and phrases - has achieved such success and longevity. Tore Janson tells its history from origins to present. Brilliantly conceived and written with the same light touch as his bestselling history of languages, A Natural History of Latin is a masterpiece of adroit synthesis. The author charts the expansion of Latin in the classical world, its renewed importance in the Middle Ages, and its survival into modern times. He shows how spoken and written Latin evolved in different places and its central role in European history and culture. He ends with a concise Latin grammar and lists of Latin words and phrases still in common use. Considered elitist and irrelevant in the second half of the twentieth century and often even banned from schools, Latin is now enjoying a huge revival of interest across Europe, the UK, and the USA. Tore Janson offers persuasive arguments for its value and gives direct access to its fascinating worlds, past and present.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Latin Grammar: Forming Part of a Popular System of Classical Instruction It is not intended to disparage the Grammar now commonly distinguished by the epithet of Eton. On the contrary, we thankfully acknowledge our obligation to its Original Authors; and only lament that, from particular circumstances in its production, it has not been always of that use, for which it is essentially adapted. A short detail of the history of its gradual assumption of its present form will fully explain its incongruities. It should be premised that this Grammar was originally compiled for the use of St. Paul's School, of which dean colet was the Founder, and william lily the first Master. This original, though now very rare, and scarcely known to exist, except as the foundation of our modern grammars, was a notable production in its day: Cardinal Wolsey recommended it by a Latin Preface, in which a course of Classical Instruction was prescribed to all other Seminaries, and its use was enjoined in every School throughout the whole kingdom. Supported by such powerful patronage, as well as by its own unquestionable merits, we can not be surprised at its extensive circulation, and adoption as a standard Introduction to the Latin Language. Accordingly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Carl Darling Buck's Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin (1933), this book is an explanation of the similarities and differences between Greek and Latin morphology and lexicon through an account of their prehistory. It also aims to discuss the principal features of Indo-European linguistics. Greek and Latin are studied as a pair for cultural reasons only; as languages, they have little in common apart from their Indo-European heritage. Thus the only way to treat the historical bases for their development is to begin with Proto-Indo-European. The only way to make a reconstructed language like Proto-Indo-European intelligible and intellectually defensible is to present at least some of the basis for reconstructing its features and, in the process, to discuss reasoning and methodology of reconstruction (including a weighing of alternative reconstructions). The result is a compendious handbook of Indo-European phonology and morphology, and a vade mecum of Indo-European linguistics--the focus always remaining on Greek and Latin. The non-classical sources for historical discussion are mainly Vedic Sanskrit, Hittite, and Germanic, with occasional but crucial contributions from Old Irish, Avestan, Baltic, and Slavic.
