Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Delve into what it was like to live during the eighteenth century by reading the first-hand accounts of everyday people, including city dwellers and farmers, businessmen and bankers, artisans and merchants, artists and their patrons, politicians and their constituents. Original texts make the American, French, and Industrial revolutions vividly contemporary. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "The Suppression of the African Slave Trade to America" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. 'This monograph was begun during my residence as Rogers Memorial Fellow at Harvard University, and is based mainly upon a study of the sources, i.e., national, State, and colonial statutes, Congressional documents, reports of societies, personal narratives, etc. The collection of laws available for this research was, I think, nearly complete; on the other hand, facts and statistics bearing on the economic side of the study have been difficult to find, and my conclusions are consequently liable to modification from this source. The question of the suppression of the slave-trade is so intimately connected with the questions as to its rise, the system of American slavery, and the whole colonial policy of the eighteenth century, that it is difficult to isolate it, and at the same time to avoid superficiality on the one hand, and unscientific narrowness of view on the other. While I could not hope entirely to overcome such a difficulty, I nevertheless trust that I have succeeded in rendering this monograph a small contribution to the scientific study of slavery and the American Negro.' William Edward Burghardt "W. E. B." Du Bois (1868 – 1963) was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, writer and editor. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois grew up in a relatively tolerant and integrated community. After completing graduate work at the University of Berlin and Harvard, where he was the first African American to earn a doctorate, he became a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. Du Bois was one of the co-founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1909.

The task of compiling a bibliography of the African slave trade is a difficult one as the literature comprises books, pamphlets and periodical articles in a variety of languages from the sixteenth century to the present day. This title aspires to present a representative selection of the material available and serve as a guide to the main categories of printed material on the subject in western languages. Due to their pre-existing availability and overwhelming quantity, government publications have been kept to a minimum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Works of W.E.B. Du Bois is a monumental compilation of essays, poems, and sociological studies that delve into the complexities of race, social inequality, and African American identity in America. Du Bois's writing is characterized by its eloquence, intellectual depth, and impassioned advocacy for racial justice, making this collection a significant contribution to American literature and social thought. With his unique perspective as a black intellectual and activist, Du Bois offers profound insights into the history and struggles of African Americans, while also challenging prevailing ideas of race and prejudice in society. W.E.B. Du Bois, a pioneering civil rights leader and scholar, drew inspiration from his own experiences of racism and discrimination to write The Collected Works. His background as the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University and his founding of the NAACP showcase his dedication to advancing the rights and voices of marginalized communities. Du Bois's commitment to social justice and tireless efforts to expose racial inequality motivate the powerful and thought-provoking content of this comprehensive collection. I highly recommend The Collected Works of W.E.B. Du Bois to readers interested in exploring the intersections of race, history, and social activism. Du Bois's profound vision and articulate prose provide valuable insights into the ongoing struggle for equality and civil rights in America, making this collection essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics of race and society.
