Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherlock Holmes Handbook sums up a Canadian scholar’s lifetime expertise about Sherlock Holmes – the characters and themes, the publishers and readers, Victorian London and the Houdini connection, radio actors and cartoonists, the fans who cling to Holmes’s reality and the professors who tease out motifs from the fifty-six short stories and four novels. The first edition of Sherlock Holmes Handbook appeared in 1993. This edition catches up on new films, new books (a few with a hint of the supernatural) and the advent of the Internet, which has spread Holmes’s fame and Sherlockian fun even further worldwide. The intervening years have brought three multi-volume editions of the Sherlock Holmes stories, with hundreds of footnotes providing new insights and new amusement. They have also seen Holmes repeatedly on the amateur and professional stages, including a few Canadian productions. And there have been changes to everything from copyright rules to libraries, booksellers and audio recordings.

Book excerpt: My name is Arthur Pendrake, which I know sounds very British, but I’m actually an American living at the present time in the small village of Lavenham, a bit north of London. The millennials, if they knew me, would probably call me retro and they’d be right because I have always been enamored of the old days and ways. That would explain why I chose to buy a small cottage on the outskirts of Lavenham, a sleepy little hamlet with numerous lovely gardens and a funny little building that is trying to fall down, but remains propped up by the buildings on either side of it. I’m a freelance journalist who has made a decent, well, actually better than that, living hunting out stories of crime, corruption, sugary human interest, intrigue, and oddities of the past. More specifically, anything that I think some segment of the population might want to read about. More specifically than that, anything that I can convince someone to publish and pay me a few quid for my work. My dream, we all have them, has always been to publish my own magazine. I’ve tried books, but they take too long. If I invest a year of my life writing one and no one wants to read it, what do I have? Even magazines are a distinct risk, considering the incessant dumbing down of the reading portion of the world’s population. A writer can only hope to reach the dwindling numbers who do not want all knowledge delivered in ten second snatches on some form of electronic media.

Book excerpt: Ever since his creation, Sherlock Holmes has enthralled readers. Our perception of him and his faithful companion, Dr Watson, has been shaped by a long line of film, TV and theatre adaptations. This richly illustrated book, compiled by Alex Werner, Head of History Collections at the Museum of London, is an essential guide to the great fictional detective and his world. Using the museum's unrivalled collections of photographs, paintings and original artefacts, it illuminates the capital city that inspired the Sherlock Holmes stories, in particular its fogs, Hansom cabs, criminal underworld, famous landmarks and streets. Accompanying the landmark exhibition at the Museum of London, the first since 1951, this book explores how Arthur Conan Doyle's creation of Sherlock Holmes has transcended literature and continues to attract audiences to this day. Authoritatively written by leading experts, headed by Sir David Cannadine, this thought-provoking companion sheds new light on the famous sleuth and reveals the truth behind the fiction, over 125 years after the first Sherlock Holmes story was written.
