Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses, Argumentative and Devotional, on the Subject of the Jewish Religion, Vol. 1 of 2: Delivered at the Synagogue Mikveh Israel, in Philadelphia, in the Years 5590-5597 IN the following work the reader is presented with the labour of more than six years. Many of the Discourses were composed, when suffering both under mental and bodily afflictions, when any exertion was extremely painful; and it must not be imagined, that, what appears to read smoothly, and as if written off-hand, costs not an intense degree of thought and application. Very often the labour was interrupted by severe sickness and other nu toward events, and hence the frequent long intervals between the different treatises. Still I never relaxed in my endeavours to diffuse religious and useful knowledge, and I fervently trust that I have succeeded, to a certain extent, to impart some information which is not readily accessible in books in general circulation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the dogmatic sequel to Levering’s Engaging the Doctrine of Marriage, in which he argued that God’s purpose in creating the cosmos is the eschatological marriage of God and his people.. God sets this marriage into motion through his covenantal election of a particular people, the people of Israel. Central to this people’s relationship with the Creator God are their Scriptures, exodus, Torah, Temple, land, and Davidic kingship. As a Christian Israelology, this book devotes a chapter to each of these topics, investigating their theological significance both in light of ongoing Judaism and in light of Christian Scripture (Old and New Testaments) and Christian theology. The book makes a significant contribution to charting a path forward for Jewish-Christian dialogue from the perspective of post-Vatican II Catholicism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses, Vol. 3: Argumentative and Devotional, on the Subject of the Jewish Religion Delivered Chiefly at the Synagogue Mikveh Israel, in Philadelphia, in the Years 5598 5601 The kind reception which has been extended to my first series of Discourses, published four years ago, and the frequent inquiries for a continuation of the same, have emboldened me to appear again before the public with this new claimant of their favour. - The present collection is rather less than a half of the former; since various interruptions, which I need not enumerate, independently of the shorter period during which they were delivered, prevented me from speaking as often as I might have wished. It is truly to be regretted that so far public addresses on religious topics have constituted but a small portion of our devotional exercises in all the countries where the English is spoken; and I believe that it may be said without any vanity on my part, that in our Synagogue was the first attempt made for about ten years past to give religious instruction in lectures. It can easily be imagined that there are many difficulties in the way of a successful pursuit of the calling of a public teacher among our people in this country, owing chiefly to the fact, that we are composed of persons from every European nation, and that therefore to many the English language is partly unintelligible, especially as in an oration the ideas cannot be always conveyed in very simple language, without divesting the subject of all dignity. Still much might be done in furtherance of the introduction and support of teaching by lectures, if those sufficiently well acquainted with the vernacular tongue of England and America would lend their countenance, and elect either ministers capable of speaking no less than reading after the accepted mode, or appoint public lecturers in addition to the usual officers of the Synagogue. No doubt the latter method would be more in accordance with the public wants; because the Reader proper has to perform duties sufficiently laborious without having to preach when the usual service is finished, or during the same. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Israel's Faith: A Series of Lessons for the Jewish Youth IN 1879 Mr. N. S. Joseph, of London, published, under the title Religion, Natural and Revealed: A Series of Progressive Lessons for Jewish Youth, an instructive guide-book of the tenets and principles of the Jewish Faith. Its popularity has been so well sustained in England that the present publishers, who have long been in quest of an adequate presentation of the teachings of Judaism for young readers, de cided to reissue the book with such changes and mod ifications as were deemed necessary. Accordingly, the editor, to whom the delicate task of revision and adaptation was intrusted, undertook to prepare, for young American readers, an abridgment of the original work, which still remains, despite the rather voluminous literature on the subject, the only text-book in English fit to be placed in the hands of students. Much has been eliminated, no doubt, which is useful and even valuable to the advanced student, but great care has been taken to omit nothing likely to impair unity of thought or to affect lucidity of expression. Book excerpt: The Kuzari is one of the basic books of Jewish literature, a required text in the library of every educated Jew--and of every educated Christian who would understand the religion of Israel. The author, foremost poet and thinker of the Jewish Middle Ages, offers clear and usable delineations of the religion of Israel. In the easy style of a Platonic dialogue, he presents first a critique of Christianity and Islam, and then explores the nature of Israel's first religious faculty, the question of the "chosen" people, the implications of a "minority religion." Against those who accommodate to prevailing philosophical trends, Judah Halevi is blunt, frank and uncompromising in his discourse on the central teachings of Judaism: revelation, prophecy, the laws, the Holy Land, and the role of the Jewish people as spokesman for religious faith.
