Minorities accounted for over 30% of our nation's population in 2015 and are projected to account for over 50% of our national population in 2060 (Vespa et al., 2018). Cultural competency training and diversity education is imperative for healthcare professionals because the cultural intelligence and attitudes of healthcare providers have been identified as factors that contribute to healthcare disparities (Hall et al., 2015). Hence, graduate programs must strive to matriculate culturally competent students who will provide equally excellent healthcare services to patients of all cultural backgrounds. This study aims to develop a diversity education seminar series that could be implemented in a range of graduate school programs for rising health care professionals and evaluate its benefit in Towson University's Doctor of Audiology program. Information regarding cultural perceptions was gathered from a range of graduate programs at Towson University via a Culture Perspectives Questionnaire. Doctor of Audiology graduate students and faculty were required to attend three separate seminars focusing on general and topic specific diversity education. A program evaluation was completed following each seminar, to gather participant feedback. Findings from our survey revealed that the respondents of the Cultural Perspectives Questionnaire were majority white women who most frequently made contact with white heterosexual women and men both on and off Towson University's campus. This study confirmed that the racial and gender make-up of our sample was consistent with the overall demographics of Towson University's College of Health Professions and the demographics of professional healthcare fields across America. The cumulative results of the Cultural Perspectives Questionnaire and subsequent diversity seminar program evaluations suggest a strong desire for diversity in graduate programs and focused diversity education, thus indicating support for continued implementation of diversity seminars. The overall findings of this study illustrate the need for diversity education to illuminate graduate students' awareness of their lack of cultural intelligence and support their professional growth. Continued research on this topic is required to evaluate this model and other forms of diversity training to assess their effectiveness in educating graduate students and ultimately healthcare professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a guide for designing professional development programs for graduate students. The teaching competencies framework presented here can serve as the intended curriculum for such programs. The book will also be an excellent resource for evaluating programs, and will be an excellent resource for academics who study graduate students. This book presents the work of the Graduate Teaching Competencies Consortium to identify, organize, and clarify the competencies that graduate students need to teach effectively when they join the professoriate. To achieve this goal, the Consortium developed a framework of 10 teaching competencies organized around three overarching questions:• What do graduate students need to achieve by the end of their graduate education to be successful teacher-scholars?• What do graduate students need to understand about higher education to have successful careers as educators?• What do graduate students need to do to be successful teachers during their graduate student careers?Although much work has been done to identify the competencies of effective teachers in higher education, only a small portion of this work has been conducted with graduate student instructors. This is an important area of research given that graduate students are critical in the higher education academic pipeline. Nationally, graduate students teach between 25% and 50% of courses offered at the undergraduate level. Graduate student teaching is also critical because during early teaching experiences teachers establish a teaching style and set of teaching skills, which will endure as graduate students enter the professoriate. It is important to develop a teaching competency framework that is specific to graduate student instructors as they often have unique needs and roles as teachers. For example, graduate student instructors are in the unique position of becoming experts in their field concurrent with learning to teach. Moreover, as many professional development programs for graduate student instructors evolve based upon factors such as available resources and perceived needs of graduate students, this framework will be a useful aid for thoughtfully designing strategic, evidence-based, comprehensive professional development opportunities and programs.

Book excerpt: Graduate Education in the Chemical Sciences is a summary of the December 1999 workshop, "Graduate Education in the Chemical Sciences: Issues for the 21st Century." This workshop discussed the various features of graduate education in chemical science and technology. Using case histories and their individual experiences, speakers examined the current status of graduate education in the chemical sciences, identified problems and opportunities, and discussed possible strategies for improving the system. The discussion was oriented toward the goal of generating graduates who are well prepared to advance the chemical sciences in academia, government, and industry in the next 5 to 10 years.
