Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selection of Passages From Plato for English Readers, Vol. 1 The following collection of 'extracts from the English translation of the Dialogues of Plato' was undertaken by the editor in accordance with the wish of the late Master of Balliol. The Master himself helped to choose the passages for insertion, and the larger portion of the ms. Was submitted to him before his death. He was of opinion that the selection would be of value to readers who might be deterred by the size and cost of the complete work, as well as to young students; while the University Extension movement, and the increasing number of Colleges for Women, both in England and America, also seemed to offer a field for a compilation of this nature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selection of Passages From Plato, Vol. 2: For English Readers The principal object of the Republic is the construction of an ideal state, in which, to use Plato's own significant language, 'philosophers are kings, or the kings and princes of this world have the power and spirit of philosophy, and political greatness and wisdom meet in one' (v. 473); but there is, moreover, a secondary thread of connexion running through the whole - the enquiry into the nature of Justice and the happiness of the just man. Plato must have had at least one predecessor in his task; for Aristotle has given us (Pol. ii. 8) an interesting account of Hippo-damus of Miletus (c. 444 B.C.), who was, he says, 'the first person, not a statesman, to make enquiries about the Perfect State.' Hippo-damus is called by some authorities a Pythagorean; and probably the impulse to such studies came from that school, both to him and to Plato. Pythagoras and his disciples, we are told, held the government in Crotona and other cities of Magna Graecia during a considerable time; and even after they were driven from power, it is natural to think that the later philosophers of the Pythagorean school continued to include political science among the subjects with which they occupied themselves. We can scarcely doubt, however, that Plato's thoughts were also drawn in the same direction by the events of the period in which his life was cast. He was born about the time of Pericles' death (B.C. 429), and lived to see the rise of the Macedonian power under Philip, dying in the year of the capture of Olynthus (B.C. 348). Book excerpt: The Republic is a Socratic dialogue, written by Plato around 380 BCE, concerning the definition of justice, the order and character of the just city-state and the just man. The dramatic date of the dialogue has been much debated and though it must take place some time during the Peloponnesian War, "there would be jarring anachronisms if any of the candidate specific dates between 432 and 404 were assigned". It is Plato's best-known work and has proven to be one of the most intellectually and historically influential works of philosophy and political theory. In it, Socrates along with various Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice and examine whether or not the just man is happier than the unjust man by considering a series of different cities coming into existence "in speech", culminating in a city (Kallipolis) ruled by philosopher-kings; and by examining the nature of existing regimes. The participants also discuss the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the roles of the philosopher and of poetry in society.

Book excerpt: THE First Alcibiades is a conversation between Socrates and Alcibiades. Socrates is represented in the character which he attributes to himself in the Apology of a know-nothing who detects the conceit of knowledge in others. The two have met already in the Protagoras and in the Symposium; in the latter dialogue, as in this, the relation between them is that of a lover and his beloved. But the narrative of their loves is told differently in different places; for in the Symposium Alcibiades is depicted as the impassioned but rejected lover; here, as coldly receiving the advances of Socrates, who, for the best of purposes, lies in wait for the aspiring and ambitious youth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text, which contains the complete Greek text of the Apology and of Crito with other selections, offers an introduction to Plato’s language as well as an introduction to Socrates as presented by Plato. These two goals determined Lewis Leaming Forman’s ample selection of passages from the writings of Plato. Forman’s detailed and helpful notes enhance appreciation of how Greek prose—particularly Plato’s—produces its effects. They include helpful discussions of syntax, the uses of particles, the effects of word order, and rhetorical devices. Forman also includes an appendix with an additional set of notes containing information chiefly on various syntactic patterns in the Greek language. Particularly suitable for second-, third-, or fourth-year students of Greek, this volume is also a useful resource for the Platonic scholar.
