Book Synopsis The Apocryphal New Testament by : J. K. Elliott
Download or read book The Apocryphal New Testament written by J. K. Elliott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-27 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of apocryphal writings supersedes the best-selling edition by M. R. James, first published in 1924. Since then, several new works have come to light, and the textual base for some of the works previously translated by James is now more secure. In this volume, J. K. Elliott presents new translations of the texts into modern English, together with a short introduction and bibliography for each of them. The collection is designed to give readers the most important and famous non-canonical Christian writings, many of them popular legends with an enormous influence on later, particularly medieval, art and literature, as well as on later beliefs and practices of the Church.
Book Synopsis The Words of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas by : David W. Kim
Download or read book The Words of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas written by David W. Kim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed analysis of the Gospel of Thomas in its historic and literary context, providing a new understanding of the genesis of the Jesus tradition. Discovered in the twentieth century, the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas is an important early text whose origins and place in the history of Christianity continue to be subjects of debate. Aiming to relocate the Thomasine community in the wider context of early Christianity, this study considers the Gospel of Thomas as a bridge between the oral and literary phases of the Christian movement. It will therefore, be useful for Religion scholars working on Biblical studies, Coptic codices, gnosticism and early Christianity.
Book Synopsis The Wisdom of the Pearlers by : Brian Colless
Download or read book The Wisdom of the Pearlers written by Brian Colless and published by Cistercian Publications Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pearlers we meet in this book were early monks of Syria, Mesopotamia (Iraq), and Persia (Iran), They saw themselves as pearl-divers and pearl-merchants searching, through asceticism and prayer, for the precious pearls of mystical experience. Their quest led them into the wilderness, to a state of silent solitude in remote caves and hermitages. Working from Syriac manuscripts in the British Museum and the Vatican Library, and from the Greek monastery of Saint Catherine in the wilderness of Sinai and the Coptic monastery of the Syrians (Der es-Suriani) in the Egyptian desert, Brian E. Colless has produced a volume which draws modern readers into this little known world.

Book Synopsis The Secret Ministry of Jesus by : William W. Mountcastle
Download or read book The Secret Ministry of Jesus written by William W. Mountcastle and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses the questions concerning the crucifixion/resurrection story, the legends of Jesus in India, Tibet and China, and the unique style and content of the Fourth Gospel. The "street theatre" style of the Hebrew prophets grounds the belief that Jesus also employed drama to proclaim his visions. To encourage his people who were suffering under cruel Roman oppression, he dramatized Isaiah's "Suffering Servant" poem that climaxes with his rescue/resurrection-a promise that God will rescue Israel. Isaiah's "Missionary Servant" poem inspired him to carry his Gospel into new lands. The Syrian Acts of Thomas and more recently discovered material detail his secret ministry to India, Tibet, and China. There, his spirited exchanges with Hindus, Buddhists, and Taoists have enriched the Gospels and may have affected the evolution of eastern religious and philosophical thought, particularly that of Mahayana Buddhism. The book's discussion provides evidence that Jesus was a pioneer of interfaith dialogue and a prophet of world spirituality who inspires us to build a world community of justice, peace and love for people of all faiths. It is appropriate for college and university classes in Bible and Qur'an studies, contemporary theology, and current religious issues.
