Book excerpt: Essex, one the largest counties of England, stretches from the suburban fringes of East London to the fishing and sailing ports of Harwich and Maldon and the famous seaside resorts of Clacton, Frinton, and Southend. Its buildings encompass rich Roman survivals, powerful Norman architecture, and the remains of major Tudor and Jacobean country houses. Essex is first and foremost a county famed for its timber buildings, from the eleventh-century church at Greensted to the early and mighty barns at Cressing Temple, and a wealth of timber-framed medieval houses. Later periods have also made their contribution, from Georgian town houses to Victorian and Edwardian industrial and civic buildings, and from important exemplars of early Modern Movement architecture to the major monument of High Tech at Stansted Airport.

This book was released on 2016-09-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Two of the Churches of Essex Architecturally Described and Illustrated The South Aisle and Chapel, ten feet six inches wide, equal the length of the Nave, and form an interesting appendage to the Church the roof has been ceiled similarly to the Chancel, and at first sight appears to be vaulted. The lower portion of the screen enclosing the Chapel remains across the Aisle, the centre doors have disappeared; it is seldom that even so much of these screens is to be met with. The windows, all of the same age, and well executed, slightly differ in design - they have two compartments each, with the exception of a single-light window in the west wall; that on the east is very elegant; of two on the south, that within the Chapel is distinguished by a ribbed so ite. The square piscina, south of the altar, had originally a corbelled sill. Many of the old open seats remain, they are plain, substantial and secured next the wall to an embattled capping of large dimensions. This book was released on 2003 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough and detailed report on the excavation of a low-status Roman site in advance of gravel extraction in Boreham, 8 km to the north-east of Chelmsford. Whilst briefly discussing prehistoric evidence at the site relating to Neolithic deposits, early to middle Bronze Age ring-ditches, a late Bronze Age settlement and an early Iron Age building, the main focus is on the 2nd- to 4th-century Roman villa and associated settlements and deposits. The Roman aisled villa and house was found to be set within a ditched compound with a network of fields and enclosures and also encompassing a bath-house and ancillary buildings including a granary and workshop or store. The methodology and results of the excavation are rpesented in detail and analysis of finds, zoological and botanical remains attest to the economy and means of production in the site as well as its wider significance for the area. Summaries in English, French and German.
Download or read book Essex Churches written by David Stanford and published by Frances Lincoln Limited. This book was released on 2006 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the success of his Suffolk Churches, David Stanford turns his attention to the neighbouring county of Essex, presenting 50 churches, chosen for their beauty, historical or anecdotal interest, in a series of captivating photographic portraits. The variety of the churches is breathtaking. The selection includes St Peter and St Paul, an ancient gem hidden away in the back streets of the London suburb of Dagenham, St Andrew Greensted Juxta Ongar, possibly the oldest surviving timber-built church in the world, St Clement West Thurrock, used for the funeral scene in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral, and the Priory Church of St Laurence Blackmore, with its complex and dramatic history. David Stanford's atmospheric photography captures the spirit of these unique buildings as architectural heritage, as historic monuments and as places of Christian devotion.
Book Synopsis Chapels of England by : Christopher Wakeling
Download or read book Chapels of England written by Christopher Wakeling and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Protestant Reformation, religion remained remarkably unstable in Great Britain, and places of worship were the focus of dispute and regular change. Beginning in the seventeenth century, the growth of the Nonconformist denominations left a particularly rich architectural legacy in the form of a vast and diverse network of churches and chapels constructed throughout the towns and cities of England. Although many of these buildings have been lost, about 20,000 remain, some still in use by congregations to this day. The Chapels of England provides the first chronological history of Nonconformist architecture in England, from the seventeenth century to the present day. Beautifully illustrated throughout with interior and exterior photography, the book includes examples that range from small wayside chapels to large urban churches and encompass all the country's regions and each of Nonconformity's main religious traditions. The book's chronological organization allows readers to follow the main developments in the architecture of Nonconformity and understand how these developments fit within broader religious and cultural conversations.
