Book Synopsis A Life of Psalms in Jewish Late Antiquity by : A. J. Berkovitz
Download or read book A Life of Psalms in Jewish Late Antiquity written by A. J. Berkovitz and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible shaped nearly every aspect of Jewish life in the ancient world, from activities as obvious as attending synagogue to those which have lost their scriptural resonance in modernity, such as drinking water and uttering one's last words. And within a scriptural universe, no work exerted more force than the Psalter, the most cherished text among all the books of the Hebrew Bible. A Life of Psalms in Jewish Late Antiquity clarifies the world of late ancient Judaism through the versatile and powerful lens of the Psalter. It asks a simple set of questions: Where did late ancient Jews encounter the Psalms? How did they engage with the work? And what meanings did they produce? A. J. Berkovitz answers these queries by reconstructing and contextualizing a diverse set of religious practices performed with and on the Psalter, such as handling a physical copy, reading from it, interpreting it exegetically, singing it as liturgy, invoking it as magic and reciting it as an act of piety. His book draws from and contributes to the fields of ancient Judaism, biblical reception, book history and the history of reading.
Book Synopsis Interpreting Israel's Scriptures by : Matthieu Richelle
Download or read book Interpreting Israel's Scriptures written by Matthieu Richelle and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2022 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many readers find exegeting a passage from the Old Testament to be a mysterious process. How should one begin? What methods should one use? Written in a pragmatic style, Interpreting Israel's Scriptures guides the reader by offering concrete methods for exegesis that are illustrated by numerous examples and accompanied by well-chosen references to secondary sources. This English translation of the 2012 original French version of Richelle's book has been expanded and revised and has been reorganized to have a tripartite structure: the making of the text, the various facets of the text, and "the reader in front of the text." The book is designed for use in exegesis courses or for personal study, and it is designed to be used both by students who know Hebrew and by those who do not. The book explores a variety of themes relevant for exegesis, including poetry literary genre, literary context, geographical context, historical context, structure, narrative analysis, intertextuality, and reception history. For those who know Hebrew, the book also includes chapters on translation, textual criticism, and compositional criticism. Finally, this English edition has two new chapters: one on feminist and gender studies, and one on postcolonial criticism.

Book excerpt: The books of Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah address problems in and around ancient Judah in ways that are as incisive and critical as they are optimistic and constructive. Daniel C. Timmer's The Theology of the Books of Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah situates these books in their social and political contexts, examining the unique theology of each as it engages thorny problems in Judah and beyond. In dialogue with recent scholarship, this study focuses on these books' analysis and evaluation of the world as it is, focusing on both human beings and their actions, and God's commitment to purify, restore, and perfect the world. Timmer also surveys these books' later theological use and cultural reception. His study brings their theology into dialogue with concerns as varied as ecology, nationalism, and widespread injustice. It highlights the enduring significance of divine justice and grace for solid hope and effective service in our world.

Book Synopsis Midrash and Multiplicity by : Steven Daniel Sacks
Download or read book Midrash and Multiplicity written by Steven Daniel Sacks and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pirke de-Rabbi Eliezer represents a late development in “midrash”, or classical rabbinic interpretation, that has enlightened, intrigued and frustrated scholars of Jewish culture for the past two centuries. Pirke de-Rabbi Eliezer’s challenge to scholarship includes such issues as the work’s authorship and authenticity, an asymmetrical literary structure as well as its ambiguous relationship with a variety of rabbinic, Islamic and Hellenistic works of interpretation. This cluster of issues has contributed to the confusion about the work’s structure, origins and identity. Midrash and Multiplicity addresses the problems raised by this equivocal work, and uses Pirke de-Rabbi Eliezer in order to assess the nature of “midrash”, and the renewal of Jewish interpretive culture, during its transition to the medieval era of the early “Geonim”.
