Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1900s, the Qing dynasty implemented a nationwide school system to buttress its power. Although the Communists, contemporary observers, and more recent scholarship have all depicted rural society as feudal and these educational reforms a failure, Elizabeth VanderVen draws on untapped archival materials to show that villagers and local officials capably integrated foreign ideas and models into a system that was at once traditional and modern, Chinese and Western. Her portrait of education reform both challenges received notions about the modernity-tradition binary in Chinese history, and addresses topics central to debates on modern China, including state making and the impact of global ideas on local society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can education be run as a profitable business and still be driven by a humanitarian vision? SABIS shows the answer is yes. Now with 60 schools in 15 countries and over 60,000 students, SABIS is a global education company committed to improving lives. The book is a journey through time - tracing the company from its humble origins in 1886 Mount Lebanon, through the civil war to the present day. It's also a journey through geographies, from Kurdistan to Katrina - from the first international schools in war-torn northern Iraq, to the first charter school to reopen after the hurricane devastated inner city New Orleans. SABIS goes where other educational providers are unwilling to tread, helping to rebuild lives shattered by war and natural disaster. It's finally a journey through the minds of committed educators, watching as they grapple with the fundamental question of how we educate young people in the virtues that have stood the test of time, whilst still enabling them to be prepared for a future of unknown possibilities.

Book excerpt: By adopting oral history and fieldwork methods and exploring historical data, this book chronologically depicts the development of the schools and education in a village in North China over a century. The book reveals how education and school life in the rural village are being impacted not only by its own history and traditions, but also by external powers; more specifically, the development of rural schools is influenced by the tensions between Chinese and Western culture, between history and reality, between countryside and cities, and between national and local powers. In essence, villagers’ educational experience is actually a battlefield for school education and local tradition – the children’s lives are dominated by school education, leaving local traditions few opportunities to exert an influence. The study also discusses how school education and local traditions have influenced villagers’ social mobility, a topic that has rarely been studied in previous literature. In summary, rural schools have been developing within an interactive network composed of various actors. With the fading of national power since the 1980s, local rural actors have enjoyed a much more liberal social and political space and thus now play a more active role in rural education. Presenting a microcosm that reflects the historical development of rural education in China, the book is a valuable resource for researchers in the field of in rural education, educational history, and educational anthropology, as well as for readers interested in rural education in China.

Book Synopsis Rallying the Whole Village by : James P. Comer
Download or read book Rallying the Whole Village written by James P. Comer and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three decades now, the Yale School Development Program’s “whole village” approach has been transforming schools into places where students learn, develop, and thrive. Even students at risk become eminently successful in the same schools when SDP practices are established. With nearly 600 school communities across the nation trained in child psychiatrist James Comer’s holistic model of child development and comprehensive plan for school reform, the SDP now presents the specifics of that model and plan in action. Rallying the Whole Village is prepared for easy inclusion in graduate and undergraduate courses in education, special education, and social work, and for school administrators, district superintendents, researchers, and policy makers at all levels. Topics discussed by the authors include children’s psychosocial development, group dynamics of effective school communities, teacher preparation and school/university partnerships, appropriate alignment of classroom content to standardized tests, increased student engagement and learning time, research and evaluation, community health, government initiatives, and school/business partnerships. This volume will be an invaluable resource in the creation of school communities populated by healthy, well–functioning adults and children whose bright dreams of the future are truly attainable goals. “Over the last quarter century, often working against fearsome odds, James Comer’s School Development Program has achieved notable success in improving the quality of education in many American schools. In this wide-ranging book, Comer and his senior colleagues explain how they have accomplished this remarkable feat.” —Howard Gardner, Graduate School of Education, Harvard University “This compelling volume shows educators and parents how much can be accomplished when we make the success of the child in every aspect of development our constant focus and our ultimate goal.” —Edward Zigler, Sterling Professor of Psychology, Yale University “ SDP is both insistent and humane, a rare combination. And it works. This new book brings SDP’s many friends up to date on the extraordinary work that started in New Haven in 1968.” —Theodore R. Sizer, Brown University
