It is hoped, therefore, that the attention given to both these departments may win for the accompanying volume a place among the useful books written for the instruction of the young. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School History of England IN the small space allowed me in this little book, I have tried to set before young readers a connected history of the rise and development of England. While giving as far as possible the chief facts required by students, I have been especially anxious to present a vivid picture of the life, the difficulties, and the achieve ments of our ancestors showing how our laws, our constitution, our trade, and our colonies have arisen. If this short sketch opens the way to the study of more comprehensive histories, leading those now growing up into citizens of a Widespread empire to take a lively interest in the past, present, and future of our nation, it will have done its work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ontario High School History of England Climate. - Father Ocean, it has been said, has a bias toward England. The in uence of the warm winds sweeping across the Atlantic to her shores brings a mild climate to latitudes that in America are Arctic. It is strange to think that London is in the same latitude as parts of Hudson Bay. England rarely has severe cold. The average difference of temperature between the warm est and the coldest months of the year is not more - than twenty-five degrees, and changes in the seasons are so slight that her people can live an outdoor life throughout the year. There is, for instance, no month when rowing ceases on the Thames or when frost wholly forbids plough ing. Winds are stronger and more rain falls in England than in the adjacent regions of the continent. Charles II, who had dwelt in many lands, said that the best climate was one which permitted men to be abroad with pleasure, or at least without trouble and inconvenience, for the most days of the year and the most hours of the day. This condition, he thought, vprevailed in England more than in any other country in Europe, and without doubt it has helped to make the English an active race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England, for School Use Situation.-the British Isles lie just off the west coast Of Europe. They look on the map like cakes of ice crumbling away from a huge glacier. There are about five thousand islands in all. Some of them are mere ledges of rock that can serve only as nest ing-places for sea-birds. Some of them, like the Shetlands and the Orkneys, the Hebrides, Skye, Mull, the Isle of Man, and the Isle of Wight, are large enough to furnish food and Shelter to human beings, and have been inhabited from time immemorial. Two only, however, Great Britain and Ireland, are of sufficient importance to figure in the world's history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England for Junior Classes In drawing up these outlines of English History for junior classes, it has been my object to produce a readable and connected narrative of the most important events in the history of our country, without any political, theological, or ecclesiastical bias, which dis figures so many of our school histories, and renders them unsuitable to F be put into the hands Of the young. For this reason I have confined myself as much as possible to a simple statement of facts, from which the readers, if they are sufficiently thoughtful, or are guided by intelligent teachers; may draw their own lessons and inferences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ontario Public School: History of England It would be fatal, even in a history for elementary schools, to adopt a style of writing supposed to be especially suitable for the young. The tone would be unreal, and young readers would resent its artificiality. The book has, however, been written for the young, who, like their elders, need no more than a clear and vivid narrative. i hey are not likely to be much interested in political and constitutional questions, unless these are connected with action. The attempt has, therefore, been made to describe as clearly as possible the persons chiefly concerned with the many and great issues in British history. Old-fashioned teachers will miss the mention of some of the Acts of Parliament upon which they have been wont to dwell. Only those Acts have been introduced which are most vital in the complex and wonderful life of the British nation. The author owes special thanks to fr. C. W. Jefferys, who has given much thought to the illustrations, and has aimed to link them clearly and vividly with the text. His admirable drawings will, it is believed, add much to the interest of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of the United States It has been the aim of the writer to fulfill this condition. At the same time an attempt has been made to have the narrative vivid in order that the pupil may not escape the impression that American History is an interesting move ment, and that, whether in co6peration or in collision, men are always struggling to attain great ends. This quality seizes upon the human and dramatic feelings of the child and holds his interest in the subject. As a result the people who inhabit the world of history are made akin to those who are in action in the real world around him. To encourage this interest and to enable the pupil to enter more fully into the spirit of the past, important and typical events have been frequently made to stand out vividly by a somewhat full description To impress great historical scenes upon the mind of the young is as important as to paint them on canvas. As a further stimulus to the sympathetic and constructive im agination, and as an appeal to the higher tastes, ten full-page illustrations in colors have been introduced. These illustrate ten of the most dramatic or important events in American History and serve as historical milestones to the pupil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early New England Schools The order is that of the logical development of the schools through their various transition periods, with such excerpts from the laws as show the growth in legal power. The motive for the work lies in the following statement in Mr. George H. Martin's preface to his book, The Evolution of the Massachusetts School System. He says, This book is not a history for such a work the materials are ample and only await the approach of some one who has time and the inclination to use them. The curiosity aroused by that statement led to the first record, that to the second, until curiosity became a disease. However, this is not a history, but rather the materials out of which history may be made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
