APPENDIX IHAVE not in this sketch of the life of Marie Amelie thought it'advisable to enter into the strange story of Sir Ralph Payne Gallwey,1 in which the theory is supported that Louis Philippe was not the son of the Duke of Orleans at all, but of an Italian official named Chiappini. If the extraordinary story he tells is the truth, then neither Louis Philippe nor any of the Orleans family now existing are really descendants of that family at all: for both the younger sons and the two daughters of Philippe Egalite died without issue. The "Memoirs of Maria Stella, Lady Newborough," brought out by herself in 1830, were seized and destroyed by the police at Paris the day they appeared: another edition was published in 1848. Sir R. Payne Gallwey says that this was a frightful nightmare to Louis Philippe. In support of this theory it is alleged-- 1. That in 1772 Egalite' and his wife were travelling in Italy incognito, as Count and Countess de Joinville. 2. That in 1773, at Modigliana, in Tuscany, the socalled Comtesse de Joinville gave birth to a daughter. 3. That her husband, anxious for a son, exchanged her for the son of Chiappini, constable of Modigliana, born the same day. 4. That the girl was brought up as the daughter of Chiappini, sang in public, and married at an early age 1 "The Mystery of Lady Newborough " (Sir Ralph Payne Gallwey). Lord Newborough; while the boy, as the heir of Philippe Egalite, became Duc de Chartres, Duc d'Orleans, and King of the French. 5. That whereas the other children of Egalite, he himself, and his wife were fair, refined, and handsome, Louis Philippe was dark, plebeian-looking, and awkward, and that persons who knew Chiappini said he strongly resembled him. 6. That on the other hand Maria Stella in no...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the eighteenth century witnessed a flourishing of the string quartet, often represented as a smooth and logical progression from first violin-dominated homophony to a more equal conversation between the four voices. Yet this progression was neither as smooth nor as linear as previously thought, as Mara Parker illustrates in her examination of the string quartet during this period. Looking at a wide variety of string quartets by composers such as Pleyel, Distler and Filtz, in addition to Haydn and Mozart, the book proposes a new way of describing the relationships between the four instruments in different works. Broadly speaking, these relationships follow one of four patterns: the 'lecture', the 'polite conversation', the 'debate', and the 'conversation'. In focusing on these musical discourses, it becomes apparent that each work is the product of its composer's stylistic choices, location, intended performers and intended audience. Instead of evolving in a strict and universal sequence, the string quartet in the latter half of the eighteenth century was a complex genre with composers mixing and matching musical discourses as circumstances and their own creative impulses required.

Book excerpt: This Companion offers a concise and authoritative survey of the string quartet by eleven chamber music specialists. Its fifteen carefully structured chapters provide coverage of a stimulating range of perspectives previously unavailable in one volume. It focuses on four main areas: the social and musical background to the quartet's development; the most celebrated ensembles; string quartet playing, including aspects of contemporary and historical performing practice; and the mainstream repertory, including significant 'mixed ensemble' compositions involving string quartet. Various musical and pictorial illustrations and informative appendixes, including a chronology of the most significant works, complete this indispensable guide. Written for all string quartet enthusiasts, this Companion will enrich readers' understanding of the history of the genre, the context and significance of quartets as cultural phenomena, and the musical, technical and interpretative problems of chamber music performance. It will also enhance their experience of listening to quartets in performance and on recordings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vclav Polvka (1927-1971) was born into Czechoslovakias elite, roughly eight years after the country emerged from the ruins of Austria-Hungary. In this diary, which was found in an attic in Oslo, Norway in 2012, the young medical student with a strong interest in classical music describes three crucial years for Europe, which, beginning in 1945, was moving from World War with Nazi occupation to Cold War with communist dictatorship. In the summers of 1946 and 1947, Vclav travels to Denmark, where he meets a young Danish woman, Vibeke Hauer, with whom he falls in love, and later marries. In this respect, Vclav Polivkas diary is a Czech-Nordic love story with a happy ending. But Czechoslovakia would not enjoy such good fortune. Almost immediately after the country was liberated, Polvka expresses his doubts about the intentions of the Russians. He realizes early on that indoctrination, censorship, and outright lies do not bode well for the future of freedom, and he shares his thoughts with surprising clarity in the pages of his diary.

Assembled by a mysterious superspy and operating without the political or bureaucratic oversight that can hamstring even the bravest fighting forces, the Superhawks are America’s ruthless answer to 9/11. An ultra-elite force operating on the edges, they are the world’s best sharpshooters, spies, demolition men, pilots, brawlers, and soldiers—and they all have a personal motive for revenge. In Strike Force Alpha, the Superhawks’ mission is to kill Osama bin Laden. Hidden aboard the Ocean Voyager, this elite unit of assault troops carries out brazen, daring raids all over the Persian Gulf as it seeks its number one target: al-Qaeda’s master mission planner. Strike Force Bravo begins with the Superhawks taking on a terrorist cell that’s captured Singapore’s Tonka Tower Hotel. But al-Qaeda is hatching a new plot involving Stinger missiles. Can the Superhawks stop it in time? Or will the American military bureaucracy trip itself up before they even have a chance? In Strike Force Charlie, dozens of al-Qaeda terrorists preparing to unleash attacks from the heart of America sneak into the United States under paper-thin disguises. The Superhawks team up with a group of civilians to protect the country, save thousands of lives, and purge the government of high-level traitors.. And in Strike Force Delta, a supersquad from America’s premier special ops unit, Delta Force, comes under attack in West Africa. Though they take out over fifty terrorists, the secret Delta Thunder team is captured. It’s up to the Superhawks to invade the radicals’ fortress, save the unit’s men, and flatline the “crown prince” of terrorism before he can execute the hostages on live TV.
