"That's why they call me Cash, young man," says the pigeon. The two quickly become friends, and Cash tells Anish that a squirrel is trying to steal his loot. Cash also shares the amazing story of his ancestor, Cher Ami, a hero who saved many soldiers in 1918. Anish admits that he is a little frightened because the next day is his first day at school and everything is new to him. Cash arranges for Anish to meet some of his human friends by inviting Anish to play on his soccer team. The next day, Anish is excited and happy. Everyone at school and on his soccer team is friendly and helpful. After school each day, Coach Cash drills the soccer team to prepare for an upcoming tournament, but a sneaky squirrel continually steals things from him. The players, however, form a great team because they are unselfish and appreciate others. All their practice and hard work pay off, and the championship game is full of excitement and surprises. Dedication: To My Friends You warm me with your presence We share memories of our past We cheer and console each other That's why our friendships last. Friends are precious gifts That can't be bought or sold So, you see my dear companions Our bond is pure gold! About the Author Years ago, a devasting hurricane hit the city where Sandy Thompson lived. Residents evacuated, scattering all across the country. Houses were destroyed, and companies moved to other states. The many uprooted people had to start over. Their children had to leave their friends and attend new schools. Mrs. Thompson maintained close relationships with many of her former students and their families. Parents often called to tell her what their children were doing in their new schools. Sandy remembers one touching story about a school that established a "buddy bench" on its playground. New students or those who had no one to play with could sit on this special bench to alert their peers, who were encouraged to ask those on the bench to join them. Sandy thought this was such a wonderful strategy for helping kids meet one another and form friendships. Years later, Sandy described this special bench to some of her lifelong friends. They laughed, imagining what it would be like for them to meet on such a bench today. They certainly would not come to the bench to join a game of tag, but perhaps they would exchange recipes or tell one another about their aches and pains. Sandy realized how long she has been friends with so many wonderful people. Though many now live far away, they remain a big part of her life, and Sandy smiles whenever she contemplates how lucky she is.

Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling debut story of four superfan friends whose devotion to their favorite band has darkly comical and deadly results. Just know from the start that it wasn’t supposed to go like this. All we wanted was to get near them. That’s why we got a room in the hotel where they were staying. We were not planning to kidnap one of them. Especially not the most useless one. But we had him—his room key, his cell phone, and his secrets. We were not planning on what happened next. We swear. Praise for Kill the Boy Band “Moldavsky’s sharp, shocking debut is like no other.” —Entertainment Weekly “Fiercely entertaining . . . One of the smartest YA releases of the year.” —New York Daily News “Misery for the Belieber generation.” —Observer.com “Boy bands gets the Heathers treatment in this madcap macabre . . . A sendup of the artificiality of the fame-making machine from both sides, the novel’s humor is mercilessly black, and no one comes up smelling like roses.” —Kirkus Reviews “Wickedly funny.” —NPR.org “Bitingly satirical.” —Publishers Weekly “[For] anyone who’s ever had the fortune-or misfortune-of being a fan.” —Booklist “Hilarious . . . A must-have.” —School Library Journal

Book excerpt: Described as ‘a continuous carnival’ and ‘the crossroads of the world,’ Times Square is a singular phenomenon: the spot where imagination and veracity intersect. To Marshall Berman, it is also the flashing, teeming, and strangely beautiful nexus of his life. In this remarkable book, Berman takes us on a thrilling illustrated tour of Times Square, revealing a landscape both mythic and real. Interleafing his own recollections with social commentary, he reveals how movies, graphic arts, literature, popular music, television, and, of course, the Broadway theater have reflected Times Square’s voluminous light to illuminate a vast spectrum of themes and vignettes. Part love letter, part revelatory semiotic exposition of a place known to all, On the Town is a nonstop excursion to the heart of American civilization, written by one of our keenest, most entertaining cultural observers.

Here, Autumn Tooms offers tips for those new to the principalship and those who support them. Designed in an easy-to-read format, this handy guidebook provides clear, practical advice with concrete examples. Includes: Tips on the daily aspects of managing, Insights concerning politics, implementing change, and finding a sense of personal balance, Brief anecdotes from experienced principals in the field, An 'Instant Replay' at the end of each chapter to summarize information. While the dialogue is woven through sports metaphors, the ideas behind the insights are strongly grounded in the best practices in leadership. This book will be of interest to new and aspiring principals, graduate students, superintendents, administrators, school board members, and teacher leaders.

Book excerpt: One of BookRiot's Best Upcoming Cozy Mysteries for the Second Half of 2021! When murder follows Mimi Lee to her romantic island getaway, she puts on her best sleuthing hat with her sassy cat in tow in this adventurous cozy mystery by Jennifer J. Chow. Mimi Lee just found an extra perk to being a pet groomer at Hollywoof (other than cuddling animals all day long, that is). Pixie St. James, one of Mimi’s clients and the investor behind Hollywoof, has offered her and her boyfriend, Josh, a getaway at her vacation home, nestled on beautiful Catalina Island. With the island just outside of Los Angeles but still far enough from the hustle and bustle, Mimi, Josh, and their cat Marshmallow (who, of course, wouldn’t be caught dead in a dingy pet hotel) are excited for their relaxing stay. That is, until Pixie’s last renter, Davis D. Argo, turns up dead. Mimi and Josh’s romantic getaway immediately turns into an enormous buzzkill, especially when Pixie asks Mimi for help. The police suspect Pixie, and Mimi knows a thing or two about wrongful allegations. Mimi figures it couldn’t hurt to snoop a little since she’s already there, and soon discovers that a valuable item is missing. Except Pixie isn’t the only one in the neighborhood who has been robbed. There is something strange happening on the island, and Mimi won’t stop until she finds out what it is.
