Book excerpt: A ROGUE'S DOWNFALL The Anniversary After the Earl of Reardon, one of London's most notorious rakes, ruined the virtue and reputation of a young lady at a masquerade ball on Valentine's Day, he did the honorable thing and married her before settling her at his country estate and abandoning her there. Now, one year later, he has returned home to his wife and young son, wondering if it is too late to woo her properly and make amends for a year of shameful neglect. The Wrong Door During a dull evening at a particularly tedious house party Viscount Lyndon, a notorious rake, makes an assignation to spend the night with a willing widow. In the darkness, however, he opens the wrong door and enters the wrong room. He soon finds himself honor-bound to offer for the young lady who was the unfortunate victim of his error. She, however, does not react with predictable meekness. Instead, she sets out to bring him to his knees. Precious Rogue Miss Peabody and her mother are ecstatic when Mr. Bancroft, London's most elusive bachelor, accepts an invitation to a house party at their country estate. They boast that he is about to offer marriage. However, it is upon Patricia Mangan, the quiet, unremarkable, impoverished niece Mrs. Peabody treats more as a servant than a relative, that Mr. Bancroft finds himself turning his attentions, surprising himself as much as he surprises her and everyone else.

Book Synopsis Commentary on Macaulay's History of England by : Sir Charles Harding Firth
Download or read book Commentary on Macaulay's History of England written by Sir Charles Harding Firth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1964. Before the great war Sir Charles Firth used to give from time to time a course of lectures on Macaulay's History of England. When he undertook the preparation of an illustrated edition of that work, published 1913-15 in six volumes he began to revise his lectures in order to compile from them a commentary on the History. Unfortunately the task of revision was interrupted during the war and never resumed except to publish two articles, on Macaulay's Third Chapter1 and Macaulay's Treatment of Scottish History,2 which form chapters vi and viii of this book. Collated in this volume are these works and also commentary whose object is not merely to criticise the statements made by Macaulay and the point of view adopted by him, but also to show the extent to which his conclusions had been invalidated or confirmed by later writers who had devoted their attention to particular parts of his subject, or by the new documentary materials published during the last sixty years.

Book Synopsis History’s Most Daring Rogues and Villains by : Nigel Blundell
Download or read book History’s Most Daring Rogues and Villains written by Nigel Blundell and published by Pen and Sword True Crime. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathered together within the pages of this book is a roguish array of artful tricksters, fantastic fakers, rascally fraudsters and cunning conmen. They all bend the rules and usually the law. Yet however reprehensible their misdeeds, these thoroughly rotten scoundrels often display the very essence of enterprise and adventure. It would be wrong to condone their antics, of course, but it is difficult not to admire their artifice. After all, this sort of raffish crime has spawned scores of anti-heroes in books, movies and TV series. But the stories told here are all true – among the most barely-believable dodgy misdeeds of the past two centuries. Powerful motives drive this book’s extraordinary characters as they rampage on the wrong side of the law. Greed is the most usual, ambition is another, lust sometimes plays a compelling part. But many are compelled by no other cause than a perverted sense of adventure. It is these various forces that link the disparate bunch of characters in this fascinating catalogue of crime. If, as the saying goes, ‘the Devil has the best tunes’, he certainly also has some of the best stories – and here are some of the most startling case histories. Together they’re the diabolically fiendish work of History’s Most Daring Rogues and Villains.
