Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geomorphology of Central America is authored by a scientist with more than 30 years of regional assessment research experience in Central American countries, arming scientists with a classic research method—a method most effective when applied to specific geographic regions globally. The scientific techniques used for assessing regional studies of an area reflect a level of expertise that has become more difficult to come by over the past three decades and underscores the importance of regional assessments of geomorphological features. Complemented with beautifully crafted and exacting maps that capture the region’s unique landscapes, Geomorphology of Central America introduces a global vision of the geomorphology and volcanic field of Central America from Guatemala to Panama, making it the first single source of geomorphological content for the region. Features the latest research on the seismic behavior of the Central America region, including volcanic activity, landslides, rivers, forest areas, and topographic environments. More than 100 figures, illustrations, and photographs underscore key concepts and aid in retention. Authored by a geomorphologist with more than 30 years of research experience in the field with a focus on Central America.
Book Synopsis Volcanic History of Western Nicaragua and Geochemical Evolution of the Central American Volcanic Front by :
Download or read book Volcanic History of Western Nicaragua and Geochemical Evolution of the Central American Volcanic Front written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a long term study on the geochemical evolution of the Central American Volcanic Front led by my advisor, Michael Carr and colleagues at Rutgers University, my dissertation work centers around the development of a better understanding of the duration and scope of a Central America volcanic lull to better constrain and interpret possible causation. To so, I have attempted to improve our knowledge of the volcanic record during this interval by attempting to locate samples that might have erupted during this time period. This effort yielded ages on volcanic samples ranging from 1.1 to 3.6 Ma and, thus, substantially reducing the volcanic gap in Nicaragua. Thus, it may be that while Nicaraguan volcanism was reduced in volume between 7 and 3.6 Ma, activity was still occurring albeit at a substantially reduced rate. Results of this effort, has given a more complete record that permits more precise analysis of how the volcanic front has evolved since the Miocene. Geochemical analyses of the active and Miocene volcanic fronts document that U/Th values increased by nearly threefold following the Central America, Pacific Coast "carbonate crash" that has been documented at about 10 Ma, related to the closing of the Isthmus of Panama. Although this transition was considered rather abrupt, data from this study indicate that the transition was somewhat more gradual, occurring over the last 7 myr. An increase in La/Yb Since the Miocene and with increasing distance from the trench, is perhaps due to backward migration of the arc towards the trench. A systematic increase in Zr/Nb towards the trench shows no correlation with age is indicative of a stronger subduction signal near the trench. Geochemical analysis of Tertiary volcanic rocks from El Salvador to Costa Rica combined with available 40Ar/39Ar ages indicate that U/Th values along the Nicaraguan segment of the front have increased since the Miocene, while Ba/La values have not. These values have both remained the same towards the edges of the front.

Book Synopsis Magma Redox Geochemistry by : Roberto Moretti
Download or read book Magma Redox Geochemistry written by Roberto Moretti and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the many facets of redox exchanges that drive magma's behavior and evolution, from the origin of the Earth until today The redox state is one of the master variables behind the Earth's forming processes, which at depth concern magma as the major transport agent. Understanding redox exchanges in magmas is pivotal for reconstructing the history and compositional make-up of our planet, for exploring its mineral resources, and for monitoring and forecasting volcanic activity. Magma Redox Geochemistry describes the multiple facets of redox reactions in the magmatic realm and presents experimental results, theoretical approaches, and unconventional and novel techniques. Volume highlights include: Redox state and oxygen fugacity: so close, so far Redox processes from Earth’s accretion to global geodynamics Redox evolution from the magma source to volcanic emissions Redox characterization of elements and their isotopes The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.

This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 69 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry covers the fundamental issues of volcanology: At what depths are eruptions triggered, and over what time scales? Where and why do magmas coalesce before ascent? If magmas stagnate for thousands of years, what forces are responsible for initiating final ascent, or the degassing processes that accelerate upward motion? To the extent that we can answer these questions, we move towards formulating tests of mechanistic models of volcanic eruptions (e.g., Wilson, 1980; Slezin, 2003; Scandone et al., 2007), and hypotheses of the tectonic controls on magma transport (e.g., ten Brink and Brocher, 1987; Takada, 1994; Putirka and Busby, 2007). Our goal, in part, is to review how minerals can be used to understand volcanic systems and the processes that shape them; we also hope that this work will spur new and integrated studies of volcanic systems.

This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a complete study of the Central Andean volcanism and its most distinctive features, from the lower Paleozoic to the Cenozoic times in the framework of its processes, eruptive mechanisms and geodynamic conditions. It helps readers understand the nature of the volcanic geology and the volcaniclastic related deposits linked to the evolution of the Andean continental margin. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the ancient volcanic successions and the difficulties in recognition of the original rock type caused by the effects of deformation, metamorphism and alteration. The authors use distinctive cases to describe how to apply different tools in analysis and interpretation. The selected representative, well exposed and preserved volcanic records of the Southern Central Andes analyzed in this book open new perspectives in the understanding of the volcanic processes linked to active continental margins as the Central Andes. This book will be of special interest to volcanologists and specialists in the earth sciences and appeal to both undergraduate and graduate students in geology.
