Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of Mining in California During 1919 In Amador County the most important setback to production has been the fire which broke out in the Argonaut on March 27 and also affected the Kennedy. The mill at the Argonaut lost about two months time. The South Eureka was closed early in 1918 because of impoverish ment of ore, increased costs and unwillingness of stockholders to spend more money at present for sinking and exploration. The old Eureka has so far made no production. The Central Eureka is now Operating at depths of from 3500 to 3700 feet, and have an ore body which shows considerable free gold. Here again persistence has won and the company reports show the mine in the best condition for over ten years: The full plant of forty stamps with a capacity of 5000 tons a month has recently resumed Operation, and operations for October show a net profit in spite of the fact that the closing of the South Eureka makes it necessary for the \central Eureka Company to pump the water from both mines. The ore in the new shoot is comparable in grade to that found at the Morgan mine, although of course geological conditions are different. Success at the Central Eureka is bound to have a good in uence on its neighbors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining Review for the Half-Year Ended June 30th, 1919 Tion of the branch of the mining industry concerned with the production of copper. The serious fall in the price of copper led to the cessation of smelting operations at Wallaroo, and consequently to the almost complete stoppage of the produc tion of copper ore throughout the State. The subsequent recovery of the market price of copper gives promise of a brighter future, and the mines would probably have already reached the stage of full normal production, if the dislocation of marine transport had. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Mines and Minerals The subject matter of this work is confined as far as possible to a plain statement of facts, regarding our great state and its mineral wealth. It has been a difficult and laborious task to gather all the data and statistics, as aside from a few counties, whose citizens were public spirited enough to look after their county interests, all matter has been prepared from the Secretary's office. In the early stages of the labor, much assistance was promised by members of the Association and others, in the form of special articles upon subjects of great interest to the industry, as well as reports upon various counties and their resources. As the work progressed, however, it was found that many substitute articles would be necessary, as promises make poor reading matter. The Association is indebted to the contributors, whose articles upon various subjects will be found highly interesting and instructive; to the advertisers, whose solid financial support has materially assisted in defraying the cost of publication; to Mr. J. O. Denny, whose able and conscientious services have been indispensable in the editorial work, and to the publishing house, for the extra care and attention given to the general make-up. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Placer Mining for Gold in California The increase in the price of gold from in 1932 to in 1933 and to in 1934 made such stories seem even more plausible and helped further to stimulate the migration of men to the creeks, despite the unfortunate experiences related by most of those drifting back from the gold-bearing areas. Stories of those who succeeded in making a living and of the very few who made strikes continued to be magnified out of all proportion, both in passing from mouth to mouth and in the press, and brought new recruits to the streams as late as 1937. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining in California, Vol. 25: January-October, 1929; Chapter of Report XXV of the State Mineralogist Covering Mining in California and the Activities of the Division of Mines and Mining The weak point in work of this character has been that the results of field investigations were so long in preparation that they had lost much of their usefulness by the time they finally appeared in print. As a progressive step in advancing the interests of the mineral industry, publication of the Annual Report of the State Mineralogist in the form of monthly chapters was begun in January, 1922, and continued until March, 1923. Owing to a lack of funds for printing this was changed to quarterly publication, beginning in September, 1923. For the same reason, beginning with the January, 1924, issue, it has been necessary to charge a subscription price of $1 per calendar year, payable in advance; single copies, 25 cents apiece. 'mining in Cali fornia' will continue to be sent without charge to our exchange list, including schools and public libraries, as are also other publications of the Division of Mines and Mining. Pages are numbered consecutively throughout the year and an index to the complete reports is included annually in the closing number. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the California Mining Company, 1876 On the 1500 foot level a drift has been run from our southern to our northern boundary, west of the ore vein. Cross-cuts have been run from this drift 100 feet apart, making six in all. The ore thus developed, shows a width of from 75 to 208 feet. Cross-cuts Nos. 1 and 2 have crossed the ore vein. Cross-cuts Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 have not yet been extended across the ore vein, and its width is yet unknown. A lateral drift has been run in the ore vein from the southern to the northern boundary, crossing all of these cross-cuts and intercept ing the openings of the Ophir mine. The ore passed through the entire length of this drift. Except the northern 70 feet, has been of exceedingly high grade, assaying for weeks, during its construction, a thousand dollars per ton. Three double winzes have been raised in the ore body from this level in cross-cuts Nos. 1, 2 and 3 to the 1400 foot level, all passing through ore of' excellent quality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hittel on Gold Mines: And Mining of California In quartz mining the auriferous rock is ground to a very fine powder, the gold in which is caught in quicksilver, or on the rough surface of a blanket, over which the fine material is borne by a stream of water. About two-thirds of our gold is obtained from the placers, and one-third from the quartz. A mine is defined and generally understood to mean "a subterraneous work or excavation for obtaining metals, metallic ores or mineral substances;" but this definition does not apply to our placer mines, which are places where gold is taken from diluvial or alluvial deposits. Most of the work is not subterraneous; it is done in the full light of day. In some of the claims the pay-dirt lies within two feet of the surface; in others it lies much deeper, but all the superincumbent matter is swept away. Water is the great agent of the placer miner; it is the element of his power jits amount is the measure of his work, and its cost is the measure of his profit. With an abundance of water he can wash every thing; without water he can do little or nothing. Placer mining is almost entirely mechanical, and of such a kind that no accuracy of workmanship or scientific or literary education is necessary to mastery in it. Amalgamation is a chemical process it is true, but it is so simple that after a few days experience, the rudest laborer will manage it as well as the most thorough chemist. It is impossible to ascertain the amount of gold which has been taken from the mines of California. Records have been kept of the sums manifested at the San Francisco Custom House, for exportation, and deposited for coinage in the mints of the United States; and there is also some knowledge of the amounts sent in bars and dust to England; but we have no account of the sums carried by passengers to foreign countries and coined elsewhere than at London, or used as jewelry, or of the amount now in circulation in this state. According to the books of the Custom House of San Francisco, the sums manifested for export were as follows: In 1849, $4,921,250; in 1850, $27,676,346; in 1851, $42,582,695; in 1852, $46,586,134; in 1853, $57,331,034; in 1854, $51,328,653; in 1855, $45,182,631; in 1856, $48,887,543; in 1857, $48,976,697; in 1858, $47,548,025; in 1859, $47,640,462; in 1860, $42,303,345; in 1861, $40,639,089; a total of $551,603,904 in twelve years. The exportation of gold commenced in 1848, but we have no record of the sums sent away in that year. Previous to 1854 very large sums were carried away by passengers, who gave no statement at the Custom House; since that year, the manifests show the exportation correctly within a few, millions. I am entirely satisfied that the total gold yield of California has been not less than seven hundred millions of dollars; but I have not room here to state the reasons for this opinion.
