African American children are 11 times more likely than White children to be raised in a single parent household. Adolescence is a difficult time, with the average adolescent learning how to navigate through changes to their physical development, emotional development, relational development and identify development. African American adolescent girls have additional challenges, such as self-esteem and sexuality, which they have to navigate as well. A mentorship program designed specifically to address the needs of this population can serve as a vital support system for the African American adolescent girl living with a nonresidential father.
