Book excerpt: The present doctoral dissertation contributes to the analysis of glass panels subjected to blast load, concentrating on monolithic and laminated glass prior to glass fracture. A straightforward graphical solution for monolithic glass is presented to identify maximum deformation and maximum principal stress for small and large deformations for static and idealized blast load without software. On the basis of experimental tests, load duration factors kmod for impact and blast load design for annealed glass, heat strengthened glass and fully tempered glass are proposed. In addition, design strength values for impact and blast design based on the European and German standards are suggested. As a result, blast pressure capacity charts for monolithic fully tempered glass plates subjected to idealized blast load are presented. Moreover, design temperatures of interlayer in blast design situation based on empirical data in accordance with Eurocode are determined for vertical double glazed and triple glazed units for Germany, showing that laminated glass should not be regarded with monolithic glass approach in general.

These facades provide a visual connectivity with the exteriors, enhance daylighting and provide better aesthetics for such spaces. Solar protection system for a glazed facade should control the direct solar radiation transmission and avoid the ill effects on occupant comfort. In this context, studies have been carried out in two open plan- conditioned office building of a warm humid climate. In situ experimental measurements accompanied by subjective surveys have been performed to evaluate the indoor thermal and lighting quality along with the performance of the glazing system. Comparative data is acquired from simulation studies for monthly variation in cooling energy with different double glazed windows. Experimental studies are performed to see the effect of sun control films as well as external shading over the double glazed glass in bringing down the heat gain. Parameters which influence the performance of double skin façade are discussed. Air velocities inside the shaft and heat fluxes are measured to determine the efficiency of the façade.

Book excerpt: The design of modern high-performance facades for the construction industry's largest and most significant projects often involves the use of prefabrication, modern glazing, or curtain wall technologies (or combinations thereof). As a means of quality assurance and control, we depend on familiar tools: applicable codes and industry standards, specified performance requirements, Building Enclosure Commissioning, best practices, warranties, performance mock-ups, performance verification testing, and field inspection. Yet even systems designed with the highest level of detail and the most rigorous quality assurance/quality control programs may still be undermined by piecemeal value management, shortcomings in coordination, and cost and schedule issues. The forensics of building enclosure science is replete with cautionary tales of building enclosures that were designed with the highest of aspirations but that failed to perform as intended. Using an institutional building constructed in 2001 as a case study, we will take a deep dive into the critical details (transitions within the assembly as it evolves from roof to wall, joints, and water management systems) and other sometimes vague requirements such as serviceability and durability. The advantage of hindsight during an evaluation is that we are able to evaluate individual failures as well as the relationship and cascading effects that failures can have on other time-dependent durability requirements. We will present a taxonomy for understanding and analyzing each individual failure, the relationships such failures have with one another, and the decisions made during a project. These organizational strategies may be useful tools when making decisions during early project phases. While the ultimate service life of many "modern" curtain wall systems is expected to exceed the careers of practitioners tasked with design, manufacture, and installation of the systems, a critical look at these issues will become increasingly important as the building stock of high-performance facades and architectural glass continues to age.

Two seismic loading histories were developed and employed in the laboratory to simulate the effects of moderate and severe earthquakes on a full-scale storefront wall system test assembly. Serviceability limit states and ultimate limit states of storefront glass and related glazing components were defined and assessed at moderate and severe earthquake loading levels. Experimental results indicated that for all glass types tested, serviceability limit states of glass edge damage and gasket seal degradation in the storefront wall system were exceeded during the moderate earthquake simulation. Ultimate limit states of major cracking and glass fallout were reached for the most common storefront glass type, 1/4 in. annealed monolithic glass, during the severe earthquake simulation. Annealed laminated glass, fully tempered monolithic glass, and insulating glass units constructed with either annealed or fully tempered glass were highly resistant to glass fallout and major cracking during the severe earthquake simulation"--Abstract, leaf iv
