Book Synopsis Nationalism and Social Policy by : Daniel Béland

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent proliferation of literature on nationalism and on social policy, relatively little has been written to analyse the possible interaction between the two. Scholars interested in social citizenship have indirectly dealt with the interaction between national identity and social programs such as the British NHS, but they have seldom examined this connection in reference to nationalism. Specialists of nationalism rarely mention social policy, focusing instead on language, culture, ethnicity, and religion. The main objective of this book is to explore the nature of the connection between nationalism and social policy from a comparative and historical perspective. At the theoretical level, this analysis will shed new light on a more general issue: the relationships between identity formation, territorial politics, and social policy. Although this book refers to the experience of many different countries, the main cases are three multinational states, that is, states featuring strong nationalist movements: Canada (Québec), the United Kingdom (Scotland), and Belgium (Flanders). The book looks at the interplay between nationalism and social policy at both the state and sub-state levels through a detailed comparison between these three cases. In its concluding chapter, the book brings in cases of mono-national states (i.e. France, Germany, Sweden, and the United States) to provide broader comparative insight on the meshing of nationalism and social policy. The original theoretical framework for this research is built using insight from selected scholarship on nationalism and on the welfare state.

Book Synopsis Territory and Power in the United Kingdom by : Jim Bulpitt
Download or read book Territory and Power in the United Kingdom written by Jim Bulpitt and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Territory and Power in the United Kingdom is about the nature of the UK state, where it came from and where it is going. Bulpitt sought to summarise the political code and statecraft that has helped govern the territories of the United Kingdom for much of the twentieth century, though it had its antecedents many years before. He provides an account of its emergence, operation and decline, which summarises an important phase in the United Kingdom's history and marks out why the country stood out from its continental neighbours in terms of its territorial organisation and state tradition. This ECPR Classics edition includes a new introduction by Peter John placing this important, classic work in a current context.

This Handbook brings together leading scholars to demonstrate how territory has shaped institutional structures, public policies, elections, political parties, and identity across the world. Offering theoretical, comparative and empirical insights, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of territory on modern political, economic and social life.

This detailed analysis of the Scottish and Welsh Conservative Parties explains how they moved from campaigning against devolution to sitting in the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly. Tracing the processes of party change in both parties this study explains why the Welsh Conservatives unexpectedly embraced devolution while the Scottish Conservatives took much longer to accept that Westminster was no longer the priority. This book will be of interest to students of British, Scottish and Welsh politics and anyone who is interested in the Conservative Party. It also speaks to wider debates about the nature of devolution, party change and multi-level governance.
