Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the world come to be organized into sovereign states? Daniel Philpott argues that two historical revolutions in ideas are responsible. First, the Protestant Reformation ended medieval Christendom and brought a system of sovereign states in Europe, culminating at the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Second, ideas of equality and colonial nationalism brought a sweeping end to colonial empires around 1960, spreading the sovereign states system to the rest of the globe. In both cases, revolutions in ideas about legitimate political authority profoundly altered the "constitution" that establishes basic authority in the international system. Ideas exercised influence first by shaping popular identities, then by exercising social power upon the elites who could bring about new international constitutions. Swaths of early modern Europeans, for instance, arrived at Protestant beliefs, then fought against the temporal powers of the Church on behalf of the sovereignty of secular princes, who could overthrow the formidable remains of a unified medieval Christendom. In the second revolution, colonial nationalists, domestic opponents of empire, and rival superpowers pressured European cabinets to relinquish their colonies in the name of equality and nationalism, resulting in a global system of sovereign states. Bringing new theoretical and historical depth to the study of international relations, Philpott demonstrates that while shifts in military, economic, and other forms of material power cannot be overlooked, only ideas can explain how the world came to be organized into a system of sovereign states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inexplicably, Lady Violet Denton has been all but forgotten by her wastrel brother at a boarding school for nearly two years! She has been stuck there – and without proper funds – for so long that she has been forced to take employment as the school’s new French instructor. She could never have imagined that her once-beloved brother would abandon her in this fashion, but after such a long silence, she has little choice but to accept the truth. Out of all of the Bloody Duke’s men searching for the missing Miss Denton, of course it should be Lord Alexander Huffton, the Marquess of Buxton, that stumbles upon her in a remote section of Hertfordshire – to his great misfortune. A known rake and an avowed libertine, the marquess is more comfortable in a courtesan’s bed than in the company of an innocent young woman. And Violet is about as innocent as they come. However now that he has found her, Alex is duty-bound to return her, not to mention somehow break the news to her that her brother isn’t really her brother at all. As Alex and Violet travel toward London – and her brother – the desire growing between them flares until one night, it can no longer be denied. Is Alex willing to release Violet from his arms when the time comes? Or will he do what is necessary to claim her as his? This 95,000-word novel is written in the modern, Regency romance style for a slightly hotter and sexier read. It may not be appropriate for younger audiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socrates and Legal Obligation was first published in 1981. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Charged with "impiety" and sentenced to death under the law of Athens, Socrates did not try to disprove the charges or to escape death, but rather held to a different kind of rhetoric, aiming not at persuasion but at truth. In Socrates and Legal Obligation, R.E. Allen contends that Plato's works on Socrates' acceptance of death—the Apology and the Crito — should be considered together and as such constitute a profound treatment of law and of obligation to law. Allen's study of Socrates' thought on these vital issues is accompanied by his own translations of the Apology and the Crito.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection contains six fascinating comedies by the avant-garde playwright, Robert Reichardt. Each is unique in its subject matter, and dazzling in originality. ORANGE LIPS AND THE BARBECUE PEOPLE answers the question about what happens to people when they wind up in Purgatory -- that in-between place described by Dante. Do they just sit and wait? No, they barbecue and run the lives of selected people still on Earth. A group of obnoxious barbecue people get involved with the family of Kenny "Orange Lips" Jung, and this leads to riotous conflict. ECHO AND THE CAMOUFLAGE, is set in modern Chicago, and is loosely based on the Greek Myth of Echo, Narcissus, and Queen Hera. A young blind girl, Echo Seltsam, is suddenly cured and transformed by a miracle into The Blue Lady -- a person of unlimited power. What she does with it, and how it effects her narcissistic, camouflage-wearing Father, Jerry, and others provides the comic structure of the play. The short play, KAREN, THE FUSE LADY, describes a bizarre Summer "romance" in a cheap Chicago tenement, as a young renter becomes involved with his neurotic neighbor. He battles to save his electricity (and sanity) from a woman who has other ideas about how he should live his life. HAT-P-1, OR A BIG CRUNCH. After scientists predict the Universe will soon end in a "Big Crunch," a group gathers in an affluent Chicago suburb for a black-tie party to comfort one another. It doesn't work out that way. The guests soon discover a lot about one another (not much of it good), and engage in various forms of escapism -- primarily focused on unrealistic thoughts about going to HAT-P-1, a newly discovered gigantic planet so light and fluffy it would float on water.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book introduces travelers—of the body or the mind—to a few simple economic concepts that will help them to think differently and more deeply about the differences between the people and the places they visit during their journeys. The principles and mechanics of economics are firmly rooted in everything around us, in our home country as well as in every nation and culture around the world. Having a basic grasp of economics can help all travelers to think more carefully about why things work differently in different places. Armed with this knowledge, readers will be equipped to better appreciate—and learn from—the beauty and complexity of the world around us. The Traveling Economist: Using Economics to Think about What Makes Us All So Different and the Same illustrates important economic concepts that every traveler and world citizen should understand. Employing clear, jargon-free explanations and illustrated with real-life examples, Knoop uniquely focuses on the interplay between travel and economics. He uses our shared travel experiences to illustrate exactly how economic thinking supplies such a powerful framework for understanding the world around us. More than simply explaining economics through travel experiences, this book enables adventurers who desperately want to avoid being tourists—i.e., people who travel to see what they know is there—to become explorers: those who learn each and every day from what they witness.

Book excerpt: Detterence is the most basic concept in American foreign policy today. But past practice indicates it often fails to work - and may increase the risk of war. Psychology and Deterrence reveals this stratgy's hidden and generally simplistic assumptions about the nature of power and aggression, threat and response, and calculation and behavior in the international arena. Most current analysis, the authors, note, ignore decisionmakers' emotions, preceptions, and domestic political needs, assuming instead that people repond to crisis in highly rational ways. Examining the historical evidence from a psychological perspective, Psychology and Deterrence offers case studies on the origins of World War I, the 1973 Arab-Israeli conflict, and the Falklands Wars as seen by the most important participants. These case studies reveal national leaders to be both more cautious and more reckless than theory would predict. They also show how deterrence strategies often backfire by aggravating a nation's sense of insequrity, thereby calling forth the very behavior they seek to prevent. The authors' conclusions offer important insights for superpower bargaining and nuclear deterrence.
