Book Synopsis Topological Algebras and Applications by : Anastasios Mallios
Download or read book Topological Algebras and Applications written by Anastasios Mallios and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth International Conference on Topological Algebras and Applications was held in Athens, Greece, from June 27th to July 1st of 2005. The main topic of the Conference was general theory of topological algebras and its various applications, with emphasis on the ``non-normed'' case. in addition to the study of the internal structure of non-normed, and even non-locally convex topological algebras, there are applications to other branches of mathematics, such as differential geometry of smooth manifolds, and mathematical physics, such as quantum relativity and quantum cosmology. Operator theory of unbounded operators and related non-normed topological algebras are intensively studied here. Other topics presented in this volume are topological homological algebra, topological algebraic geometry, sheaf theory and $K$-theory.
Book Synopsis $p$-adic Geometry by : Matthew Baker
Download or read book $p$-adic Geometry written by Matthew Baker and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In recent decades, p-adic geometry and p-adic cohomology theories have become indispensable tools in number theory, algebraic geometry, and the theory of automorphic representations. The Arizona Winter Schoo1 2007, on which the current book is based, was a unique opportunity to introduce graduate students to this subject." "Following invaluable introductions by John Tate and Vladimir Berkovich, two pioneers of non-archimedean geometry, Brian Conrad's chapter introduces the general theory of Tate's rigid analytic spaces, Raynaud's view of them as the generic fibers of formal schemes, and Berkovich spaces. Samit Dasgupta and Jeremy Teitelbaum discuss the p-adic upper half plane as an example of a rigid analytic space and give applications to number theory (modular forms and the p-adic Langlands program). Matthew Baker offers a detailed discussion of the Berkovich projective line and p-adic potential theory on that and more general Berkovich curves. Finally, Kiran Kedlaya discusses theoretical and computational aspects of p-adic cohomology and the zeta functions of varieties. This book will be a welcome addition to the library of any graduate student and researcher who is interested in learning about the techniques of p-adic geometry."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The axioms of a complex Banach algebra were very happily chosen. They are simple enough to allow wide ranging fields of application, notably in harmonic analysis, operator theory and function algebras. At the same time they are tight enough to allow the development of a rich collection of results, mainly through the interplay of the elementary parts of the theories of analytic functions, rings, and Banach spaces. Many of the theorems are things of great beauty, simple in statement, surprising in content, and elegant in proof. We believe that some of them deserve to be known by every mathematician. The aim of this book is to give an account of the principal methods and results in the theory of Banach algebras, both commutative and non commutative. It has been necessary to apply certain exclusion principles in order to keep our task within bounds. Certain classes of concrete Banach algebras have a very rich literature, namely C*-algebras, function algebras, and group algebras. We have regarded these highly developed theories as falling outside our scope. We have not entirely avoided them, but have been concerned with their place in the general theory, and have stopped short of developing their special properties. For reasons of space and time we have omitted certain other topics which would quite naturally have been included, in particular the theories of multipliers and of extensions of Banach algebras, and the implications for Banach algebras of some of the standard algebraic conditions on rings.

Book Synopsis Equivariant K-Theory and Freeness of Group Actions on C*-Algebras by : N. Christopher Phillips
Download or read book Equivariant K-Theory and Freeness of Group Actions on C*-Algebras written by N. Christopher Phillips and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freeness of an action of a compact Lie group on a compact Hausdorff space is equivalent to a simple condition on the corresponding equivariant K-theory. This fact can be regarded as a theorem on actions on a commutative C*-algebra, namely the algebra of continuous complex-valued functions on the space. The successes of "noncommutative topology" suggest that one should try to generalize this result to actions on arbitrary C*-algebras. Lacking an appropriate definition of a free action on a C*-algebra, one is led instead to the study of actions satisfying conditions on equivariant K-theory - in the cases of spaces, simply freeness. The first third of this book is a detailed exposition of equivariant K-theory and KK-theory, assuming only a general knowledge of C*-algebras and some ordinary K-theory. It continues with the author's research on K-theoretic freeness of actions. It is shown that many properties of freeness generalize, while others do not, and that certain forms of K-theoretic freeness are related to other noncommutative measures of freeness, such as the Connes spectrum. The implications of K-theoretic freeness for actions on type I and AF algebras are also examined, and in these cases K-theoretic freeness is characterized analytically.
Book Synopsis Functional Analysis: Surveys and Recent Results III by : K.-D. Bierstedt
Download or read book Functional Analysis: Surveys and Recent Results III written by K.-D. Bierstedt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-04-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 22 articles on topics of current interest in functional analysis, operator theory and related areas. Some of the papers have connections with complex function theory in one and several variables, probability theory and mathematical physics.Surveys of some areas of recent progress in functional analysis are given and related new results are presented. The topics covered in this volume supplement the discussion of modern functional analysis in the previous Proceedings volumes. Together with the previous volumes, the reader obtains a good impression of many aspects of present-day functional analysis and its applications. Parts of this volume can be used profitably in advanced seminars and courses in functional analysis.
