Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early nineteenth century, Byron, the man and his image, have captured the hearts and minds of untold legions of people of all political and social stripes in Britain, Europe, America, and around the world. This book focuses on the history and cultural significance for Federal America of the only portrait of Byron known to have been painted by a major artist. In private hands from 1826 until this day, Thomas Sully's Byron has never before been the subject of scholarly study. Beginning with his discovery of the portrait in 1999 and a 200-year narrative of the portrait's provenance and its relation to other well-known Byron portraits, the author discusses the work within the broad context of British and American portraiture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Receiving most attention are Thomas Lawrence and Sully, his American counterpart. The author gives the fullest account to date of Sully's career and his relation to English influences and to figures prominent in the early-nineteenth-century American imagination, among them, Washington, Fanny Kemble, Lafayette, Joseph Bonaparte, and Nicholas Biddle. Byron is discussed as an icon of the young American Republic whose Jubilee year coincided with Sully's initial work on the poet's portrait. Later chapters offer a close reading of the portrait, arguing that Sully has given a visual interpretation truly worthy of his celebrated, controversial, and famously handsome subject.

The three chapters by Fanelli (Cultural Resources Management, Independence National Historical Park) discuss the collection from its inception through the period in which the shrine that housed it became a museum. Each of the 250 entries (mostly b&w, with a few in color) in the catalog includes a brief biography of the subject, a physical description of the painting, the circumstances under which it was created, and its provenance. They are arranged alphabetically by sitter. Edited by Karie Diethorn, chief curator, Independence National Historical Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. Sixteen essays examine aspects of American art that owe a debt to Italy and Italian artists. A central theme is the tension between perceptions of Italy as a mythic presence, the visual incarnation of spirit, and a contrasting ambivalence felt by many Americans about the cultural ties binding them to Europe despite their political independence. With some 200 illustrations, 36 in color. Not indexed. Pre-publication price, $49.95, until 12-31-90. Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

How would he thrive where monarchy, aristocracy, and an established church—those traditional patrons of painting, sculpture, and architecture—were repudiated so vigorously? Neil Harris examines the relationships between American cultural values and American society during the formative years of American art and explores how conceptions of the artist's social role changed during those years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Thomas Jefferson's status as a champion of education is widely known, the essays in Light and Liberty make clear that his efforts to enlighten fellow citizens reflected not only a love of learning but also a love of freedom. Using as a starting point Jefferson's conviction that knowledge is the basis of republican self-government, the contributors examine his educational projects not as disparate attempts to advance knowledge for its own sake but instead as a result of his unyielding, almost obsessive desire to bolster Americans' republican virtues and values. Whether by establishing schools or through broader, extra-institutional efforts to disseminate knowledge, Jefferson's endeavors embraced his vision for a dynamic and meritocratic America. He aimed not only to provide Americans with the ability to govern themselves and participate in the government of others but also to influence Americans to remake their society in accordance with his own principles. Written in clear and accessible prose, Light and Liberty reveals the startling diversity of Jefferson's attempts to rid citizens of the ignorance and vice that, in the view of Jefferson and many contemporaries, had corroded and corrupted once-great civilizations. Never wavering from his faith that "knowledge is power," Jefferson embraced an expansive understanding of education as the foundation for a republic of free and responsible individuals who understood their rights and stood ready to defend them.
