Its purpose is merely to gather in concise form the more significant phases of the war, so that these may be taught in the schools of Texas. A heavy responsibility rests upon all teachers in our present crisis, for their instruction will have great influence upon the opinions of their pupils. Amid the bitterness and hatred that war develops, it becomes increasingly necessary for as many people as possible to keep clearly in mind the main issues of this conflict. Disloyalty and intrigue are abroad, and Ameri cans should one and all so understand our part in this war that no doubt or faintheartedness can turn us aside from What we have undertaken to do. Italy and France at once agreed, and Russia was willing to submit the impasse to their judgment. But Germany refused.* The conference, the German Foreign Secretary thought, would amount to a court of arbitration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War History of American Railroads The nomination of these boards by the General Editor was the first step taken in every country where the work has begun. And if any justification was needed for the plan of the Endowment, it at once may be found in the lists of those, distinguished in scholarship or in public affairs, who have accepted the responsibility of editor ship. This responsibility is by no means light, involving as it does, the adaptation of the general editorial plan to the varying demands of national circumstances or methods of work; and the measure of success attained is due to the generous and earnest cooperation of those in charge in each country. Once the editorial organization was established there could be little doubt as to the first step which should be taken in each instance to ward the actual preparation of the history. Without documents there can be no history. The essential records of the war, local as well as central, have therefore to be preserved and to be made avail able for research in so far as is compatible with public interest. But this archival task is a very great one, belonging of right to the gov ernments and other owners of historical sources and not to the his torian or economist who proposes to use them. It is an Obligation of ownership for all such documents are public trust. The collaborators on this section Of the war history, therefore, working within their own field as researchers, could only survey the situation as they found it and report their findings in the form of guides or manuals; and per haps, by stimulating a comparison of methods, help to further the adoption of those found to be most practical. In every country, therefore, this was the point of departure for actual work; although special monographs have not been written in every instance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our War With Germany: A History The participation of the United States in the great war is one of the rare historical events that give direction to the prog ress of the world. The self-governing states of Europe were struggling for life and the greatest republic in the world went to their assistance at the critical moment. A century ago the American people first proved that republican government can succeed in a first rate nation. It was as fitting as essential that they should have interfered to preserve it in time of danger. It is in this sense that the future historian will make up his opinion of our part in the great struggle. When the passions of the day subside, the American people will come to this view of the subject. They will not ask very closely about the errors committed in the conduct of the war, but they will wish to know what the world crisis was, how the nation as a nation met it, and how the people now living adjusted themselves to the problems growing out of the war when it was won. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Revolutionary War As great numbers of the descendants of Revolutionary officers and soldiers are, at this time, eagerly in search of information relative to the service of their ancestors, for purposes of profit and satisfaction as well as of history; and, as many of them reside at places where nothing of the kind can be had without considerable difficulty and expense, I have thought it my proper duty to place my collections within the reach of an interested. In so doing, lam not without a strong reason to induce a belief that they will be of some considerable historical interest in indicating the different locations and movements of the army and in showing the whereabouts of individual officers, regiments, detachments, and corps, as well as in giving the precise dates of important events; and as the financial difficulties of the infant Republic in 1760 has been a subject of great interest, both in history and in legislation, new light is thrown upon it by the correspondence dated in that year. As the Congress of the United States, the Court of Claims, and the Executive Departments are constantly engaged in the legislation upon, and in the investigation and adjustment of, claims against the United States for military service, I am convinced that much of the matter included in my collections, especially the correspondence of officers, and the list of their deaths, will serve as an important guide to individuals in asserting their claims, and as a protection of the interests of the government in adjusting them. The cries Of'the dead and dying on her doorsteps fell no longer on deaf ears.
