Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide-Book to the Poetic and Dramatic Works of Robert Browning Browning needs no helps in making his meanings clearto his readers, but for those who have found it diflicult to read him, and for those who have not a library at hand for the explanation of his allusions. In its preparation the work of others has been drawn upon freely. The Papers of the London Browning Society have been the chief source of in formation. The great amount oi interesting matter con tained in the twelve numbers now issued of those Papers has been carefully studied but it is in a form very incoa venient for reference. In this volume much of it will be found under the titles of the poems to which it refers. Mrs. Orr's valuable Handbook to Robert Browning's Works has been used to a considerable extent, because it contains much information supplied directly by Browning for the elucidar tion of his poems. In every instance where such informa tion was necessary to the purpose of the present volume it has been used, credit being given wherever possible. An other valuable source of information has been the magazine called poet-lore, which has given special attention to the interpretation of Browning's poems, and to awaking an in terest in his poetry. For the aid of the student of Brown ing who may wish to consult the books and essays referred to throughout this volume, and also the best things written of the poet, there have been added to this preface a number of brief reference lists. Very much not contained in any of the books devoted to Browning and his poetry will be found in these pages, arranged systematically and in a form con venient for reference. The book will be found to contain the following kinds of information about Browning and his works. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "My Last Duchess (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "My Last Duchess" is a poem, frequently anthologised as an example of the dramatic monologue. It first appeared in 1842 in Browning's Dramatic Lyrics. The poem is written in 28 rhymed couplets of iambic pentameter. The poem is set during the late Italian Renaissance. The speaker (presumably the Duke of Ferrara) is giving the emissary of the family of his prospective new wife (presumably a third or fourth since Browning could have easily written 'second' but did not do so) a tour of the artworks in his home. He draws a curtain to reveal a painting of a woman, explaining that it is a portrait of his late wife; he invites his guest to sit and look at the painting. Robert Browning (1812 - 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse, and in particular the dramatic monologue, made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. His poems are known for their irony, characterization, dark humor, social commentary, historical settings, and challenging vocabulary and syntax. The speakers in his poems are often musicians or painters whose work functions as a metaphor for poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1880s and 1890s, the Victorian poet Robert Browning was the "lion" of the day in the United States, particularly in Rochester. Browning's work was widely read and discussed. Even today, there are still many in America who consider themselves Browningites, and many of them belong to Browning clubs and societies. This book, the fruit of thorough and patient archival digging, brings together various fragmentary local sources and quaint memorabilia, hitherto unknown to scholars. It vividly recovers the spirit of the fascination with Browningmania, and more broadly Victoriana, that Rochesterians and Americans in general evinced in the last two decades of the nineteenth century and early part of the twentieth century.Browning's popularity, undeserved many thought, remains nonetheless a unique phenomenon in literary and cultural history, well worthy of study and comprehension. Although several books and articles were devoted to this subject, none offers a sustained explanation of how and why Browning became such an iconic figure. This book fills a gap in the scholarship and critical reception of Browning. This study offers Browning scholars and Victorianists in general a new perspective on some long-neglected but crucial material. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars in Reception and American studies as well as cultural and literary historians. Because it brings together many local anecdotes and memorabilia, this book will also find appreciative readers among the general public, especially in upstate New York region, particularly Rochester.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Browning's pre-eminent status amongst Victorian poets has endured despite the recent broadening of the literary canon. He is the main practitioner of the period's most important poetic genre, the dramatic monologue, while his engagement with many aspects of nineteenth-century culture makes him a key figure in the wider field of Victorian studies. This stimulating introduction to Browning criticism provides an overview of the major responses to the poet's work over the last two hundred years. It offers an insightful guide to criticism from various theoretical perspectives, elucidating Browning's participation in Victorian debates about aesthetics, history, politics, religion, gender and psychology.
