Although network resources (bandwidth in particular) and coverage, networking technologies, compression ratio of state-of-the-art video coders have improved, unreliability of the transmission medium prevents us from gaining the most benefit from these applications. This thesis introduces a video coder that is resilient to network failures for transmission applications by using the framework of multiple description coding (MDC). Unlike traditional video coding which compresses the video into single bitstream, in MDC the video is compressed into more than one bitstream which can be independently decoded. It not only averages out the effect of network errors over the bitstreams but it also makes it possible to utilize the multipath nature of most network topologies. An end-to-end rate-distortion optimization is proposed for the codec to make sure that the codec exhibits improved compression performance and that the descriptions are equally efficient to improve the final video quality. An optimized strategy for packetizing the compressed bitstreams of the descriptions is also proposed which guarantees that each packet is self-contained and efficient. The evaluation of the developed MD codec over simulated unreliable packet networks shows that it is possible to achieve improved resilience with the proposed strategies and the end video quality is significantly improved as a result. This is further verified with subjective evaluation over a range of different types of video test sequences.

Book excerpt: One of the most intriguing problems in video processing is the removal of the redundancy or the compression of a video signal. There are a large number of applications which depend on video compression. Data compression represents the enabling technology behind the multimedia and digital television revolution. In motion compensated lossy video compression the original video sequence is first split into three new sources of information, segmentation, motion and residual error. These three information sources are then quantized, leading to a reduced rate for their representation but also to a distorted reconstructed video sequence. After the decomposition of the original source into segmentation, mo tion and residual error information is decided, the key remaining problem is the allocation of the available bits into these three sources of information. In this monograph a theory is developed which provides a solution to this fundamental bit allocation problem. It can be applied to all quad-tree-based motion com pensated video coders which use a first order differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) scheme for the encoding of the displacement vector field (DVF) and a block-based transform scheme for the encoding of the displaced frame differ ence (DFD). An optimal motion estimator which results in the smallest DFD energy for a given bit rate for the encoding of the DVF is also a result of this theory. Such a motion estimator is used to formulate a motion compensated interpolation scheme which incorporates a global smoothness constraint for the DVF.

With this model of the expected end-to-end distortion, the encoder selects between MD coding modes in a rate-distortion (R-D) optimized manner to most effectively trade-off compression efficiency for error resilience. We show how this approach adapts to both the local characteristics of the video and to network conditions and demonstrate the resulting gains in performance using an H.264-based adaptive MD video coder. We also analyze the sensitivity of this system to imperfect knowledge of channel conditions and explore the benefits of using such a system with both single and multiple paths.

Book excerpt: This book deals with the problem of joint source-channel video transmission, i.e., the joint optimal allocation of resources at the application layer and the other network layers, such as data rate adaptation, channel coding, power adaptation in wireless networks, quality of service (QoS) support from the network, and packet scheduling, for efficient video transmission. Real-time video communication applications, such as videoconferencing, video telephony, and on-demand video streaming, have gained increased popularity. However, a key problem in video transmission over the existing Internet and wireless networks is the incompatibility between the nature of the network conditions and the QoS requirements (in terms, for example, of bandwidth, delay, and packet loss) of real-time video applications. To deal with this incompatibility, a natural approach is to adapt the end-system to the network. The joint source-channel coding approach aims to efficiently perform content-aware cross-layer resource allocation, thus increasing the communication efficiency of multiple network layers. Our purpose in this book is to review the basic elements of the state-of-the-art approaches toward joint source-channel video transmission for wired and wireless systems. In this book, we present a general resource-distortion optimization framework, which is used throughout the book to guide our discussions on various techniques of joint source-channel video transmission. In this framework, network resources from multiple layers are assigned to each video packet according to its level of importance. It provides not only an optimization benchmark against which the performance of other sub-optimal systems can be evaluated, but also a useful tool for assessing the effectiveness of different error control components in practical system design. This book is therefore written to be accessible to researchers, expert industrial R&D engineers, and university students who are interested in the cutting edge technologies in joint source-channel video transmission. An increasing number of people are using video to document their lives and share their experiences through , sites such as YouTube and Facebook. Due to this ever increasing quantity of video content, it is clear that more efficient and robust video compression algorithms are needed. In this thesis video compression and transmission are investigated, specifically focused on High Definition (HD) video coding and wireless transmission. Unfor- tunately, the techniques relied upon for efficient compression are the same tech- niques that hinder robustness. This is because conventional video compression relies on inter-frame prediction (motion estimation), intra frame prediction and variable- length entropy encoding to achieve high compression ratios but, as a consequence, produces an encoded bitstream that is inherently sensitive to channel errors. There- fore, in order to ensure reliable and robust delivery over lossy channels, it is necessary to invoke various additional error detection and correction methods. In this thesis a technique called Pyramid Vector Quantisation (PVQ) is investig- ated. In contrast to the other methods, Pyramid Vector Quantisation has the ability to prevent error propagation through the use of fixed length codewords. This thesis introduces an efficient Rate Distortion Optimisation (RDO) algorithm for intra- mode PVQ which offers similar compression performance and visual quality to intra H.264/ AVC, intra VC-I, VC-3 and Motion JPEG 2000 while offering outstanding inherent error resilience. The results are reported for a range of representative 1080p HD video sequences. The error resilience performance of the enhanced PVQ codec is then evaluated for HD content in the context of a realistic (IEEE 802.11n) wireless environment. The impact of both uncorrelated and correlated channel errors is investigated. It is shown that PVQ provides high tolerance to corrupted data compared to the state-of-the- art H.264/ AVC while obviating the need for complex encoding tools. PVQ (without explicit error resilience tools and without error concealment) is able to significantly outperform H.264/ AVC (with error resilience tools and with error concealment) by up to I3.3dB PSNR for the same wireless simulation scenario. The benefit obtained by employing a Gaussian Markov Random Field (GMRF) based wavelet domain error concealment algorithm to post process erroneously re- ceived PVQ bitstreams is also investigated. It is shown that this algorithm leads to a further 2.5dB performance gain thus outperforming H.264/ AVC by up to 15.8dB PSNR. Overall, it is hoped that the results of this thesis demonstrate PVQ's feasib- ility for in-home HD video coding and transmission.

Book excerpt: The efficiency of modern video compression is largely a result of motion-compensated prediction (MCP) that exploits temporal correlation in the signal. Multiple reference frames for MCP improve compression efficiency and error resilience and require new paradigms in (a) reference frame selection, (b) bit rate allocation among frames, (c) application to scalable video codecs, and (d) delay requirements of these codecs. We study all four of these aspects in this dissertation. A dual-frame video coder employs two past reference frames (one short-term frame and one long-term frame available for prediction) for MCP. Dual-frame video codecs benefit greatly from near-optimal intra/inter mode switching within a rate- distortion framework. We show that such a scheme improves the error resilience of the coder. We improve the mode-switching algorithm with the use of half-pel motion vectors. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of feedback in making more efficient mode-switching decisions. In previous work, it was shown that uneven assignment of quality to frames, to create high-quality (HQ) long-term reference frames, can enhance the performance of a dual-frame encoder. Here, we demonstrate the performance advantages of optimal mode selection among such HQ frames for video transmission over noisy channels. We investigate dual frame prediction for both base and enhancement layers of an SNR scalable video coder, with pulsed quality allocation in the base layer. Furthermore, a per-pixel drift estimation algorithm is introduced, where the encoder estimates the potential drift at the enhancement layer recursively and chooses coding modes accordingly. Real-time video applications require tight bounds on end-to-end delay. Hierarchical bi-directional prediction requires buffering in the encoder input and output. Dual frame prediction with pulsed quality requires buffering at the encoder output. Both codecs involve uneven bit rate allocation that affects the encoder and decoder buffering requirements. We derive an efficient rate allocation for hierarchical B-pictures, and investigate the trade-off between delay and compression efficiency. Furthermore, we discuss effect of the temporal prediction distance and prediction branch truncation.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual communications plays an increasingly important role in information infrastructures. Despite a large number of standards and commercial products for applications of visual communications, providing high quality visual information over resource-limited wireless networks still remains a major challenge. This is because of the huge data size of visual information and the complicated characteristics of wireless channels. Due to the limited bandwidth of wireless channels, it is desired that visual information is compressed by highly efficient compression schemes while, due to the time-varying error prone environments of wireless channels, controlled redundancy is necessary to be added in the compressed bitstreams in order to ensure reliable transmissions. Therefore, there is a tradeoff between efficiency and reliability. The objective of this research is to find the optimal tradeoff between efficiency and reliability for image and video transmission over wireless channels. In this dissertation, several image and video transmission systems are developed based on robust error control and optimal bit allocation. For image transmission, two systems are developed, namely, TCQ-based error-resilient coding and robust joint source-channel coding (RJSCC). In the TCQ-based error-resilient coding, DCT-transformed blocks are classified and bits are optimally allocated among different classes and different coefficients according to their importance and sensitivity to the channel noise. In RJSCC, in addition to the bit allocation in source coding, we also consider the bit allocation between source coding and channel coding. We develop an end-to-end rate-distortion (R-D) function, which incorporates both transition probability and bit error rate of a bursty channel model. Based on the R-D function, bits can be allocated in such a way that we are able to achieve an optimum tradeoff between source coding accuracy and channel error protection under a fixed bandwidth limitation. As a result, RJSCC is among the best wireless image transmission systems reported in the literature. The study for wireless image transmission leads to our research in wireless video transmission. We propose a novel pre-interleaving scheme for video streaming over bursty loss channels. The pre-interleaving scheme is able to generate the desired error patterns for video source decoding while still preserving the features of the conventional combination of channel decoding and interleaving. The pre-interleaving scheme can be applied to any standard video codecs and to both wireless channels and packet-loss channels. Finally, we show the extensive study on the rate controls in wireless video streaming systems. The study includes three aspects: the rate control for off line video coding, the rate control for rate-reduction transcoding and the rate control for adaptive wireless video streaming. We propose a rate control scheme which is able to optimally allocate bits among video frames. We demonstrate that the proposed rate control scheme can provide better quality than that of the state-of-the-art H.263 standard.

Book excerpt: Providing reliable video communications over wireless ad-hoc networks is becoming increasingly important as these networks become widely deployed in military, homeland defense, and disaster recovery applications. However, wireless ad-hoc networks impose great challenges to support such applications due to the highly dynamic network topology and the unreliable wireless channels. Given the error-prone nature of the wireless ad-hoc networks and the vulnerability of compressed video to packet losses, it is critical to enhance error resilience of video transmission over such lossy networks.
