Download or read book A Radically Modern Approach to Introductory Physics written by David J. Raymond and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This nontraditional text arose from the conviction that science and engineering students would benefit from an introductory course which covers all of physics from a modern point of view. The text takes the perspective of a modern particle physicist and is based more on wave dynamics and relativity than on classical mechanics. The subject matter is split into two volumes of twelve chapters each: Volume 1 - Waves, including geometrical optics - Theory of relativity - Relativistic matter waves and quantum mechanics - Classical mechanics as the geometric optics limit of quantum mechanics Volume 2 - Gravity - A treatment of electromagnetism which builds on relativity - Atomic, nuclear, and particle physics - Statistical mechanics and thermodynamics The result is a conceptually challenging but mathematically simple text which can be covered in two semesters or three quarters without omitting any content. Such a course has been offered for over ten years at New Mexico Tech to incoming physics majors and other interested students who are well prepared in high school physics and mathematics. David J. Raymond received a Ph.D. in high energy physics from Stanford University in 1970. He has taught physics and performed research in atmospheric physics at New Mexico Tech since 1973. The publisher will donate a portion of the price of this book to New Mexico Tech for scholarships.

Book Synopsis Modern Introductory Physics by : Charles H. Holbrow
Download or read book Modern Introductory Physics written by Charles H. Holbrow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel text structures a one-semester course of introductory physics around the question: "Why do we believe in atoms and their properties?" After a brief review of the basic terminology of mechanics, the book begins by introducing the atoms of chemistry. It then turns to the physicists hard-sphere atoms: ideal gases, pressure, temperature, viscosity. The first hint of subatomic structure comes from the discovery of the electron, and the discussion thus turns to electricity, magnetism, light, and x- rays. This leads in turn to waves and relativity, and the book concludes with modern insights into the atom: photons radioactivity, the particle/wave duality, quantum mechanics, the Bohr model, and closes the circle back to the chemists atom with Moseleys law and the periodic table. A large number of problems, some of them based on computer spreadsheets, as well as laboratory exercises serve to clarify students' understanding.

Book excerpt: "This volume is a concise summary of topics which are expressed in extreme clarity and relative simplicity." Shlomo Hoory Director, Radiation Safety Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York "This book is one of the best physics books I have read for an overview on modern physics. It is so wonderfully arranged and compact that to find one thing you will not have to go through 5 chapters. Very coherent." Amazon.com This book originated from the need for a suitable student text for the course "An Introduction to Modern Physics" given at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This course is open to all students who have completed the standard first-year physics courses in mechanics, optics, electricity and magnetism. Its primary goal is to produce graduates who are -- whatever their field of specialisation -- "modern-physics-literate". The presentation of the course material emphasises the physical aspects of the phenomena.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Understandable Physics by : Will Winn
Download or read book Introduction to Understandable Physics written by Will Winn and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will Winn has written {Introduction to Understandable Physics} in a building-block fashion. Accordingly, {Volume IV - Modern and Frontier Physics} builds on the classical physics of the earlier volumes. {Volume IV} begins by studying the birth of quantum physics and relativity early in the twentieth century. These concepts then apply to atomic physics, explaining the periodic table relative to quantized electron shells. Similarly, nuclear physics explores the nucleus relative to its collective shell model. Atomic and nuclear applications are examined in medicine, power production and research, along with familiar items such as smoke detectors, cell phones and bar-code scanners. Frontier physics examines both extremely small and large structures. Protons, neutrons, and many other particles can be classified into families. Each particle comprises {quarks}, which define a "genetic" family. A deeper substructure of {strings} has also been theorized but experimental confirmation is problematic. For very large structures, cosmology explores the evolution of the universe, noting that the Big-Bang projects that "the very small" and "the very large" were "one-and-the-same" in their early development. This sameness argues that the four basic forces of nature were originally indistinguishable! Our understanding of the expansion of the universe has been impacted by the discoveries of {dark matter} and {dark energy}, The expansion rate projects the ultimate destiny of the universe - a "big crunch" or continued expansion. Much is yet to be explored! Near the end of each chapter a [Simple Projects] section suggests experiments and/or field trips that can reinforce the physics covered. Some experiments are simple enough for students to explore alone, while others benefit from equipment available to physics instructors. Also {optional} text sections provide students with a deeper appreciation of the subject matter; however these are not required for continuity. Some of these optional topics can be candidates for term projects.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Modern Physics by : Paolo Amore
Download or read book Introduction to Modern Physics written by Paolo Amore and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the physical world was revolutionized in the twentieth century — the era of “modern physics”. The book Introduction to Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations, aimed at the very best students, presents the foundations and frontiers of today's physics. Typically, students have to wade through several courses to see many of these topics. The goal is to give them some idea of where they are going, and how things fit together, as they go along. The book focuses on the following topics: quantum mechanics; applications in atomic, nuclear, particle, and condensed-matter physics; special relativity; relativistic quantum mechanics, including the Dirac equation and Feynman diagrams; quantum fields; and general relativity. The aim is to cover these topics in sufficient depth that things “make sense” to students, and they achieve an elementary working knowledge of them. The book assumes a one-year, calculus-based freshman physics course, along with a one-year course in calculus. Several appendices bring the reader up to speed on any additional required mathematics. Many problems are included, a great number of which take dedicated readers just as far as they want to go in modern physics. The present book provides solutions to the over 175 problems in Introduction to Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations in what we believe to be a clear and concise fashion.
Book Synopsis The Pythagorean World by : Jane McDonnell
Download or read book The Pythagorean World written by Jane McDonnell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores precisely how mathematics allows us to model and predict the behaviour of physical systems, to an amazing degree of accuracy. One of the oldest explanations for this is that, in some profound way, the structure of the world is mathematical. The ancient Pythagoreans stated that “everything is number”. However, while exploring the Pythagorean method, this book chooses to add a second principle of the universe: the mind. This work defends the proposition that mind and mathematical structure are the grounds of reality.
