Book excerpt: My writing of this book has evolved over the past thirty-six years of professional nursing practice. These were my first efforts as an author, which were published in 2013: Promoting a Culture of Safety: Preventing Central Line Infections in Weill Cornell Medical Center, which used a performance improvement process to lower the rate at which critically ill patients in cardiac care developed central line infections, and Factors Influencing Critical Nurses' Perception of their Overall Job Satisfaction: An Empirical Study, which used a correctional approach and was statistically analyzed to determine the perception of critical-care nurses of their manager's leadership style and its effect on their job satisfaction. Having been on the receiving end of leadership behaviors gave me a firsthand opportunity to observe these diverse nurse leaders at both extremes of the spectrumfrom laissez-faire leadership style to dictatorial leadership style and everything in between. Each encounter has enriched my life immeasurably. My personal and professional experiences, as well as the knowledge I gained from completing my dissertation, all compelled me to write this bookto share with novice managers and those aspiring for a leadership role an awareness and provide them with some valuable information needed as they forge their career paths into a leadership role, knowing that one of the keys to effective leadership is the ability to stay intellectually curious and committed to learning with the understanding that new knowledge can come from variety of sources and to make it a point of duty to be always on a lookout for new knowledge.

Book excerpt: This exploratory study aimed to investigate the relationship between a participant's self-assessed leadership style, their level of employee engagement, and turnover intention. The population of interest was full-time civilian employees in the United States Federal Government. This study was conducted during the COVID-19 global pandemic, and the online assessment collected data for two weeks in August of 2021. The study used a survey design combining four existing scales to measure participants' leadership behaviors, levels of engagement, and intent to leave. The existing scales included the Leadership Self-Report Scale (Dussault, Frenette, & Fernet, 2013), the Employee Engagement Scale (Shuck, Adelson, & Reio, 2017), the Office of Personnel Management Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey Employee Engagement Index (Office of Personnel Management, 2019), and the Turnover Intention Scale (Bothma & Roodt, 2013). Data analysis included descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing through regression analysis. The study's findings suggest that an individual's leadership style correlates to the level of employee engagement of that leader. This study further indicates that leaders with balanced transactional and transformational leadership behaviors have higher levels of employee engagement than other leadership styles.

Book excerpt: Academics and executives argue that effective leadership is a key predictor of R&D success as well as quality management. Recent research highlights transformational leadership as a highly effective style shown to predict performance in organizations. However, no study examined the role of transformational and transactional leadership in building quality climate in R&D versus non-R&D settings. We examined the relationship between leadership style and the establishment of a quality environment in an R&D setting based on an empirical study of 511 research engineers and scientists. It is found that both transformational leadership and transactional contingent-reward leadership are related to the establishment of a quality environment in the R&D part of a telecommunications firm. However, the impact of transactional contingent-reward leadership ceases to be significant once both leadership styles are considered simultaneously using structural equations. A transformational leadership style was also found to be related to employee satisfaction.

Book excerpt: Dr. Ruben Johnson has dedicated his academic career to studying the correlation between leadership style and job satisfaction. He now presents his 2014 dissertation for anyone in the business and academic spheres who wants to learn new, influential management styles and skills. Johnson conducted his research in a North Texas community-college district. He asked all participants to fill out the Multifactor Leaders Questionnaire, 1995, or the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, 1967, and a demographic questionnaire. Johnson specifically looked for a variety of perceived leadership styles, including transactional, transformational, and laissez-faire. His data led to interesting connections and conclusions about the effect of leadership styles on morale, efficiency, and job satisfaction. In this comprehensive analysis, Johnson presents his own findings. He shows you how these findings fit within contemporary research on the subject and explores the ramifications of different leadership theories. While Johnson specifically focuses on leadership and management within a community-college setting, he intends his research to be utilized by professionals in a wide variety of industries. Anyone in a supervisory position can take the opportunity to learn how his or her individual management style affects subordinates.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the quantitative study was to apply Bass' (1985) theory of transformational leadership to 372 U.S. county leaders, with an emphasis on determining whether or not their leadership behaviors are directly and/or indirectly related to the effectiveness of U.S. county governments. The major thesis was that leadership behaviors of county government leaders may have both a direct and indirect relationship to the effectiveness of county governments. In this study, transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership behaviors served as the independent variables. Three follower attitudes and behaviors (i.e. follower job satisfaction, follower organizational commitment, and follower organizational citizenship behaviors) served as the intervening variables. Organizational performance was the dependant variable. The target population of leaders was the U.S. appointed county chief administrators, elected chief county administrators, and commission chairs. The target population of followers was county government employees who report directly to the leaders identified in the study. Two forms of survey were used to gather data for the proposed study. The leader survey asked participants to respond to questions regarding their own leadership behaviors and the performance of their organization. The follower survey asked respondents to respond to questions regarding their leaders' leadership behaviors. In addition, the follower survey asked respondents to rate their own levels of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and organizational citizenship behaviors. Overall, 1,377 US county government employees (leaders and followers) served as participants in this study, representing a total of 416 county government organizations across the county. However, the results were based on a final sample of 372 leader-follower pairs. Hypotheses and research questions described in this study were tested using several statistical analyses; specifically, correlational analyses, regression analyses, and Barron and Kenny's procedure for testing significance of indirect effects. The results of the study revealed that the leadership behaviors of county government leaders were directly related to the performance of US county governments. The results also revealed that followers' levels of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and organizational citizenship behaviors mediated the relationship between leadership behaviors and organizational performance.
