Book excerpt: Macdonald and Morris gave a series of constant term $q$-conjectures associated with root systems. Selberg evaluated a multivariable beta type integral which plays an important role in the theory of constant term identities associated with root systems. Aomoto recently gave a simple and elegant proof of a generalization of Selberg's integral. Kadell extended this proof to treat Askey's conjectured $q$-Selberg integral, which was proved independently by Habsieger. This monograph uses a constant term formulation of Aomoto's argument to treat the $q$-Macdonald-Morris conjecture for the root system $BC_n$. The $B_n$, $B_n^{\lor }$, and $D_n$ cases of the conjecture follow from the theorem for $BC_n$. Some of the details for $C_n$ and $C_n^{\lor }$ are given. This illustrates the basic steps required to apply methods given here to the conjecture when the reduced irreducible root system $R$ does not have miniscule weight.

Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications q-Series and Partitions is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1987-88 IMA program on APPLIED COMBINATORICS. We are grateful to the Scientific Committee: Victor Klee (Chairman), Daniel Kleitman, Dijen Ray-Chaudhuri and Dennis Stanton for planning and implementing an exciting and stimulating year long program. We especially thank the Workshop Organizer, Dennis Stanton, for organizing a workshop which brought together many of the major figures in a variety of research fields in which q-series and partitions are used. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE This volume contains the Proceedings of the Workshop on q-Series and Parti tions held at the IMA on March 7-11, 1988. Also included are papers by Goodman and O'Hara, Macdonald, and Zeilberger on unimodality. This work was of substan tial interest and discussed by many participants in the Workshop. The papers have been grouped into four parts: identities, unimodality of Gaus sian polynomials, constant term problems and related integrals, and orthogonal polynomials. They represent a cross section of the recent work on q-series includ ing: partitions, combinatorics, Lie algebras, analysis, and mathematical physics. I would like to thank the staff of the IMA, and its directors, Avner Friedman and Willard Miller, Jr., for providing a wonderful environment for the Workshop. Patricia Brick and Kaye Smith prepared the manuscripts.

The astonishing breadth of Rademacher's mathematical interests is well represented in this volume. The papers collected here range over such topics as modular forms, partitions and $q$-series, Dedekind sums, and Ramanujan type identities. Rounding out the volume is the opening paper, which presents a biography of Rademacher. This volume is a fitting tribute to a remarkable mathematician whose work continues to influence mathematics today.

Book excerpt: This revised and expanded new edition will continue to meet the needs for an authoritative, up-to-date, self contained, and comprehensive account of the rapidly growing field of basic hypergeometric series, or q-series. Simplicity, clarity, deductive proofs, thoughtfully designed exercises, and useful appendices are among its strengths. The first five chapters cover basic hypergeometric series and integrals, whilst the next five are devoted to applications in various areas including Askey-Wilson integrals and orthogonal polynomials, partitions in number theory, multiple series, orthogonal polynomials in several variables, and generating functions. Chapters 9-11 are new for the second edition, the final chapter containing a simplified version of the main elements of the theta and elliptic hypergeometric series as a natural extension of the single-base q-series. Some sections and exercises have been added to reflect recent developments, and the Bibliography has been revised to maintain its comprehensiveness.

Book excerpt: There has been continued interest in skew polynomial rings and related constructions since Ore's initial studies in the 1930s. New examples not covered by previous analyses have arisen in the current study of quantum groups. The aim of this work is to introduce and develop new techniques for understanding the prime ideals in skew polynomial rings $S=R[y;\tau, \delta ]$, for automorphisms $\tau$ and $\tau$-derivations $\delta$ of a noetherian coefficient ring $R$. Goodearl and Letzter give particular emphasis to the use of recently developed techniques from the theory of noncommutative noetherian rings. When $R$ is an algebra over a field $k$ on which $\tau$ and $\delta$ act trivially, a complete description of the prime ideals of $S$ is given under the additional assumption that $\tau ^{-1}\delta \tau = q\delta$ for some nonzero $q\in k$. This last hypothesis is an abstraction of behavior found in many quantum algebras, including $q$-Weyl algebras and coordinate rings of quantum matrices, and specific examples along these lines are considered in detail.

Because of the many special restrictions on such 3-folds, the structure of the adjunction theoretic reductions are especially simple, e.g. the 3-fold equals its first reduction, the second reduction is smooth except possibly for a few explicit low degrees, and the formulae relating the projective invariants of the given 3-fold with the invariants of its second reduction are very explicit. Tables summarizing the classification of such 3-folds up to degree 12 are included. Many of the general results are shown to hold for smooth projective n-folds embedded in P]N with N 2n -1.

This book looks at the homotopy type of the $p$-completed classifying space $BG_p$, where $G$ is a finite $p$-perfect group. The author constructs an algebraic analog of the Quillen's ``plus'' construction for differential graded coalgebras. This construction is used to show that given a finite $p$-perfect group $G$, the loop spaces $BG_p$ admits integral homology exponents. Levi gives examples to show that in some cases our bound is best possible. It is shown that in general $B\ast _p$ admits infinitely many non-trivial $k$-invariants. The author presents examples where homotopy exponents exist. Classical constructions in stable homotopy theory are used to show that the stable homotopy groups of these loop spaces also have exponents.

Part I investigates the Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of symbolic Rees algebras for one-dimensional prime ideals in Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Practical criteria for these algebras to be Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein rings are described in terms of certain elements in the prime ideals. This framework is generalized in Part II to Rees algebras $R(F)$ and graded rings $G(F)$ associated to general filtrations of ideals in arbitrary Noetherian local rings. Goto and Nishida give certain cohomological characterizations for algebras $R(F)$ to be Cohen-Macaulay or Gorenstein rings in connection with the corresponding ring-theoretic properties of $G(F)$. In this way, readers follow a history of the development of the ring theory of Rees algebras. The book raises many important open questions.

Book excerpt: Bounds for orthogonal polynomials which hold on the whole interval of orthogonality are crucial to investigating mean convergence of orthogonal expansions, weighted approximation theory, and the structure of weighted spaces. This book focuses on a method of obtaining such bounds for orthogonal polynomials (and their Christoffel functions) associated with weights on $[-1,1]$. Levin and Lubinsky obtain such bounds for weights that vanish strongly at 1 and $-1$. They also present uniform estimates of spacing of zeros of orthogonal polynomials and applications to weighted approximation theory.

Book excerpt: This work develops a theory for counting nonintersecting lattice paths by the major index and generalizations of it. As applications, Krattenthaler computes certain tableaux and plane partition generating functions. In particular, he derives refinements of the Bender-Knuth and McMahon conjectures, thereby giving new proofs of these conjectures. Providing refinements of famous results in plane partition theory, this work combines in an effective and nontrivial way classical tools from bijective combinatorics and the theory of special functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In algebraic topology, obstruction theory provides a way to study homotopy classes of continuous maps in terms of cohomology groups; a similar theory exists for certain spaces with group actions and maps that are compatible (that is, equivariant) with respect to the group actions. This work provides a corresponding setting for certain spaces with group actions and maps that are compatible in a stronger sense, called isovariant. The basic idea is to establish an equivalence between isovariant homotopy and equivariant homotopy for certain categories of diagrams. Consequences include isovariant versions of the usual Whitehead theorems for recognizing homotopy equivalences, an obstruction theory for deforming equivariant maps to isovariant maps, rational computations for the homotopy groups of certain spaces of isovariant functions, and applications to constructions and classification problems for differentiable group actions.

Book excerpt: In this paper we consider an eigenvalue problem which arises in the study of rectangular membranes. The mathematical model is an elliptic equation, in potential form, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that the potential is uniquely determined, up to an additive constant, by a subset of the nodal lines of the eigenfunctions. A formula is shown which, when the additive constant is given, yields an approximation to the potential at a dense set of points. We present an estimate for the error made by the formula. A substantial part of this work is the derivation of the asymptotic forms for a rich set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a large set of rectangles.

Book excerpt: This work presents a detailed study of the anisotropic series representations of the free product group $\mathbf Z/2\mathbf Z\star \cdots \star \mathbf Z/2\mathbf Z$. These representations are infinite dimensional, irreducible, and unitary and can be divided into principal and complementary series. Anisotropic series representations are interesting because, while they are not restricted from any larger continuous group in which the discrete group is a lattice, they nonetheless share many properties of such restrictions. The results of this work are also valid for nonabelian free groups on finitely many generators.
