Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains information on the recent status of wood-based building materials in nonresidential building construction and highlights some of the problems and opportunities wood manufacturers face. The first section covers information from the survey about characteristics of new nonresidential and nonhousekeeping building construction, such as floor area, regional distribution, and type of construction. The second provides detailed information on estimated wood use. The third presents estimates of wood use per dollar of construction and per square foot of floor space (use factors). The fourth describes the materials used in various building components. Nine categories of buildings were defined for the purposes of this study; offices, stores, industrial schools, hospitals, religious, recreational, nonhousekeeping, and public. Estimated consumption of wood products based on the findings of this survey and reported 1982 construction activity were as follows: Lumber, 2.1 billion board feet; Plywood, 1.7 billion square feet (3/8 in. basis); Structural particleboard (SPB), 41 million square feet (3/8 in. basis); Particleboard, 41 million square feet (3/4 in. basis); Hardboard, 50 million square feet (1/8 in. basis); Shingles, 870,000 squares (1 square = 100 ft 2).

The singing activity of birds declines during late-morning periods, which can affect estimates of abundance and conclusions regarding vegetative conditions indexed by birds. Therefore, it is important to quantify periods of bird activity so biologists can plan studies. We determined hourly detections from singing males of 22 nongame bird species in ponderosa pine, quaking aspen, and grassland vegetation types in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Detections of 12 of 22 species differed among 1-hr intervals after sunrise. Detections of yellowrumped warblers, Townsend's solitaires, red-breasted nuthatches, western tanagers, and American robins decreased on count-episodes more than 4 hrs after sunrise. Detections of dusky flycatchers declined on count-episodes more than 3 hrs after sunrise and detections of black-capped chickadees were greatest during the first hour after sunrise and declined afterward. Detections of many other species from songs or calls decreased on count-episodes more than 5 hrs after sunrise. We recommend that bird counts in the Black Hills be completed within 4 hrs after sunrise so estimates of bird abundance are not affected by reduced singing among males.
Book Synopsis Small-diameter Trees Used for Chemithermomechanical Pulps by : Gary C. Myers
Download or read book Small-diameter Trees Used for Chemithermomechanical Pulps written by Gary C. Myers and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To restore and maintain forest ecosystem health and function in the western interior of the United States, many small-diameter stems need to be removed from densely stocked stands. In general, these materials are underutilized. Information on the properties of these resources is needed to help forest managers understand when timber sales are a viable option to accomplish ecosystem management objectives. Providing proof that this small-diameter material yields quality pulp would help increase its value and therefore help remove it from the forest. This study examines the acceptability of the small-diameter resource as a raw material for high-yield chemithermomechanical pulping (CTMP), which has the potential for improved fiber characteristics and paper strength compared with those of thermomechanical pulping (TMP). Pulps using CTMP were prepared from lodgepole pine and mixed Douglas-fir/western larch sawmill residue chips; lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir, and western larch submerchantable logs; and lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir, and western larch small trees. These small-diameter pulps were compared with commercially obtained sawmill residue chips of a Douglas-fir/western larch mixture and lodgepole pine. These pulps were also evaluated to see if CTMP improved the properties of the final product compared with products made using TMP. Compared with the controls, the CTMP prepared from Douglas-fir and lodgepole pine small trees and Douglas-fir submerchantable logs consumed more electrical energy during pulp preparation and had higher paper strength properties and lower optical properties. Also compared with the controls, lodgepole pine submerchantable logs consumed about the same electrical energy and had marginal strength properties and higher optical properties. Western larch submerchantable logs and small trees had the lowest electrical energy consumption of all pulps tested, low strength properties, but some of the higher optical properties. Western larch submerchantable logs and small trees appear to be unsuitable for CTMP. For the majority of the materials, CTMP improved the properties of the final product compared with corresponding TMP.
