Book excerpt: Here is an extremely useful book that provides insight into a number of different flavors of processor architectures and their design, software tool generation, implementation, and verification. After a brief introduction to processor architectures and how processor designers have sometimes failed to deliver what was expected, the authors introduce a generic flow for embedded on-chip processor design and start to explore the vast design space of on-chip processing. The authors cover a number of different types of processor core.

Brooks, Jr. provide a definitive guide and reference for practicing computer architects and for students. The book complements Brooks' recently updated classic, The Mythical Man-Month, focusing here on the design of hardware and there on software, here on the content of computer architecture and there on the process of architecture design. The book's focus on architecture issues complements Blaauw's early work on implementation techniques. Having experienced most of the computer age, the authors draw heavily on their first-hand knowledge, emphasizing timeless insights and observations. Blaauw and Brooks first develop a conceptual framework for understanding computer architecture. They then describe not only what present architectural practice is, but how it came to be so. A major theme is the early divergence and the later reconvergence of computer architectures. They examine both innovations that survived and became part of the standard computer, and the many ideas that were explored in real machines but did not survive. In describing the discards, they also address why these ideas did not make it. The authors' goals are to analyze and systematize familiar design alternatives, and to introduce you to unfamiliar ones. They illuminate their discussion with detailed executable descriptions of both early and more recent computers. The designer's most important study, they argue, is other people's designs. This book's computer zoo will give you a unique resource for precise information about 30 important machines. Armed with the factors pro and con on the various known solutions to design problems, you will be better able to determine the most fruitful architectural course for your own design. 0201105578B04062001

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how we can design and make efficient processors for high-performance computing, AI, and data science. Although there are many textbooks on the design of processors we do not have a widely accepted definition of the efficiency of a general-purpose computer architecture. Without a definition of the efficiency, it is difficult to make scientific approach to the processor design. In this book, a clear definition of efficiency is given and thus a scientific approach for processor design is made possible. In chapter 2, the history of the development of high-performance processor is overviewed, to discuss what quantity we can use to measure the efficiency of these processors. The proposed quantity is the ratio between the minimum possible energy consumption and the actual energy consumption for a given application using a given semiconductor technology. In chapter 3, whether or not this quantity can be used in practice is discussed, for many real-world applications. In chapter 4, general-purpose processors in the past and present are discussed from this viewpoint. In chapter 5, how we can actually design processors with near-optimal efficiencies is described, and in chapter 6 how we can program such processors. This book gives a new way to look at the field of the design of high-performance processors.

Book excerpt: Modern signal processing systems require more and more processing capacity as times goes on. Previously, large increases in speed and power efficiency have come from process technology improvements. However, lately the gain from process improvements have been greatly reduced. Currently, the way forward for high-performance systems is to use specialized hardware and/or parallel designs. Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) have long been used to accelerate the processing of tasks that are too computationally heavy for more general processors. The problem with ASICs is that they are costly to develop and verify, and the product life time can be limited with newer standards. Since they are very specific the applicable domain is very narrow. More general processors are more flexible and can easily adapt to perform the functions of ASIC based designs. However, the generality comes with a performance cost that renders general designs unusable for some tasks. The question then becomes, how general can a processor be while still being power efficient and fast enough for some particular domain? Application Specific Instruction set Processors (ASIPs) are processors that target a specific application domain, and can offer enough performance with power efficiency and silicon cost that is comparable to ASICs. The flexibility allows for the same hardware design to be used over several system designs, and also for multiple functions in the same system, if some functions are not used simultaneously. One problem with ASIPs is that they are more difficult to program than a general purpose processor, given that we want efficient software. Utilizing all of the features that give an ASIP its performance advantage can be difficult at times, and new tools and methods for programming them are needed. This thesis will present ePUMA (embedded Parallel DSP platform with Unique Memory Access), an ASIP architecture that targets algorithms with predictable data access. These kinds of algorithms are very common in e.g. baseband processing or multimedia applications. The primary focus will be on the specific features of ePUMA that are utilized to achieve high performance, and how it is possible to automatically utilize them using tools. The most significant features include data permutation for conflict-free data access, and utilization of address generation features for overhead free code execution. This sometimes requires specific information; for example the exact sequences of addresses in memory that are accessed, or that some operations may be performed in parallel. This is not always available when writing code using the traditional way with traditional languages, e.g. C, as extracting this information is still a very active research topic. In the near future at least, the way that software is written needs to change to exploit all hardware features, but in many cases in a positive way. Often the problem with current methods is that code is overly specific, and that a more general abstractions are actually easier to generate code from.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few years, computers have evolved from pure number crunching machines to "intelligent" problem solving tools. Increasing effort has been spent on the investigation of new approaches and the application of solutions to real world problems. In this way, exciting new techniques have evolved providing support for an increasing number of technical and economical aspects. Applications range from the design and development of ultra highly integrated circuits to totally new man-machine interfaces, from software engineering tools to fault diagnosis systems, from decision support to even the analysis of unemployment. Following a first joint workshop on Advanced Information Processing held in July 1988 at the Institute for Problems of Informatics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (IPIAN) at Moscow, this was the second time that scientists and researchers from the USSR Academy of Sciences and Siemens AG, Corporate Research and Development, exchanged results and discussed recent advances in the field of applied computer sciences. Initiated by Prof. Dr. I. Mizin, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and Director of IPIAN, and Prof. Dr. H. Schwartzel, Vice President of the Siemens AG and Head of the Applied Computer Science & Software Department, a joint symposium was arranged at the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow on June 5th and 6th 1990. The meetings on Information Processing and Software and Systems Design Automation provided a basis both for presentations of ongoing research and for discussions about specific problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few years have seen significant change in the landscape of high-end network processing. In response to the formidable challenges facing this emerging field, the editors of this series set out to survey the latest research and practices in the design, programming, and use of network processors. Through chapters on hardware, software, performance and modeling, Network Processor Design illustrates the potential for new NP applications, helping to lay a theoretical foundation for the architecture, evaluation, and programming of networking processors. Like Volume 2 of the series, Volume 3 further shifts the focus from achieving higher levels of packet processing performance to addressing other critical factors such as ease of programming, application developments, power, and performance prediction. In addition, Volume 3 emphasizes forward-looking, leading-edge research in the areas of architecture, tools and techniques, and applications such as high-speed intrusion detection and prevention system design, and the implementation of new interconnect standards. Investigates current applications of network processor technology at Intel; Infineon Technologies; and NetModule Presents current research in network processor design in three distinct areas: Architecture at Washington University, St. Louis; Oregon Health and Science University; University of Georgia; and North Carolina State University. Tools and Techniques at University of Texas, Austin; Academy of Sciences, China; University of Paderborn, Germany; and University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Applications at University of California, Berkeley; Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain; ETH Zurich, Switzerland; Georgia Institute of Technology; Vrije Universiteit, the Netherlands; and Universiteit Leiden, the Netherlands.
