Book Synopsis Politics and Religion in the Portuguese Colonial Empire in Africa (1890-1930) by : Hugo Goncalves Dores
Download or read book Politics and Religion in the Portuguese Colonial Empire in Africa (1890-1930) written by Hugo Goncalves Dores and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Portuguese authorities balanced missionary and political dynamics as they sought to strengthen their claims over African territories in an imperial and colonial world that was becoming increasingly internationalized. This book sets out to investigate how missionary authorities reacted to national challenges from the monarchical and republican regimes, and rising competition within the Catholic world, as well as the Protestant threat, at the international level. To what degree were religious and missionary projects a political instrument? Was this situation similar in other colonial empires? The 1890 British Ultimatum was part of a process of conflicting religious competition in Africa (among Catholics, and between Catholics and Protestants) in parallel with inter-imperial disputes. The Portuguese authorities saw missionary presence as a potentially useful political weapon, but it cut two ways: in favour of or against its colonial rule. Foreigner missionaries in what was considered the Portuguese empire were viewed as threats since they could act as political bridgeheads for other imperial powers or could influence the native populations against Portuguese colonial presence. Anglo-Portuguese competition in Africa, the native uprisings against Portuguese rule, the attempts to negotiate a concordat with the Holy See, the Portuguese First Republic, and the aftermath of the First World War had powerful effects on the direction of Portuguese statehood, and were reflected in substantive internal debate and political disagreement. The overview of missionary experience in the Portuguese empire provided in this book is a major contribution to the international historiography of missions and empires.
Book Synopsis Presidential Institutions and Democratic Politics by : Kurt von Mettenheim
Download or read book Presidential Institutions and Democratic Politics written by Kurt von Mettenheim and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many comparative analysts see parliamentary government as essential for stable democracy, this volume argues that the American presidential system that separates and diffuses power can provide new perspectives for those building democratic institutions in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the new republics of the former Soviet Union. The authors recognize risks of rigidity, gridlock, and excessive centralization in presidential institutions. But they also emphasize the unexpected levels of legislative productivity during periods of divided government, the dramatic reversal of declining popularity by Presidents Reagan and Clinton, and the importance of direct appeals by presidents to the nation. After examining the American presidential system, the authors focus on the de-facto separation of powers in European parliaments and presidentialism in France, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Both trends in European parliamentary systems and the dramatic changes within French presidential institutions suggest that scholars should temper broad generalizations about presidential or parliamentary government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sidónio Pais and the New Republic offers a detailed examination of a critical yet often overlooked period in Portuguese history. This meticulously researched work explores the brief but significant rule of Sidónio Pais, who came to power through a military coup in December 1917 and attempted to reshape Portugal's political landscape. The book provides a nuanced analysis of Pais' New Republic, examining its origins, policies and ultimate failure. It delves into the complex interplay between various political factions, including republicans, monarchists and Catholics, as Pais attempted to forge a new political consensus. Key topics covered include: • The political and social context that led to Pais' rise to power • The structure and aims of the New Republic • The creation and role of the National Republican Party (PNR) • Pais' efforts to expand suffrage and reform the electoral system • The development of Pais' personality cult and its political implications • The regime's relationships with the military, the Catholic Church and various political groups • The ultimate unraveling of the New Republic and its legacy This work will appeal to scholars of Portuguese history, political scientists interested in regime change and democratization, and anyone seeking to understand the complexities of early 20th-century European politics. By shedding light on this brief but consequential period, the book offers valuable insights into the challenges of political reform and the dynamics of power in times of national crisis.
