Book Synopsis The Stalker Affair and the Press by : David Murphy
Download or read book The Stalker Affair and the Press written by David Murphy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, The Stalker Affair and the Press documents the media treatment of police constable John Stalker’s removal from his job and argues that this case presents a major difficulty for the standard academic analysis of the press in Britain: namely that it supports the status quo because it is part of the dominant class system. The author argues that the exclusion of non-official and dissident versions of the events can be explained by more direct causes: the ownership of the press and the routine nature of normal news production, which relies on official and established sources. Where such sources do not produce an account of events, as in the case of the Stalker affair, the overwhelming majority of press output questioned the legitimacy of state actions, even to the extent of entertaining the notion that its agents had conspired to commit murder and to pervert the course of justice. David Murphy’s fascinating analysis picks apart the notion of a ‘system’ controlling production to demonstrate the complex interaction between methods of individual journalists, their sources and the ways news is produced. This book will be of great interest to students and teachers of media studies, cultural studies, journalism, and communication studies.
Download or read book A Nobel Affair written by and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Nobel made his name as an inventor and successful entrepreneur and left a legacy as a philanthropist and promoter of learning and social progress. The correspondence between Nobel and his Viennese mistress, Sofie Hess, shines a light on his private life and reveals a personality that differs significantly from his public image. The letters show him as a hypochondriac and workaholic and as a paranoid, jealous, and patriarchal lover. Indeed, the relationship between the aging Alfred Nobel and the carefree, spendthrift Sofie Hess will strike readers as dysfunctional and worthy of Freudian analysis. Erika Rummel's masterful translation and annotations reveal the value of the letters as commentary on 19th century social mores: the concept of honour and reputation, the life of a "kept" woman, the prevalence of antisemitism, the importance of spas as health resorts and entertainment centres, the position of single mothers, and more generally the material culture of a rich bourgeois gentleman. A Nobel Affair is the first translation into English of the complete correspondence between Alfred Nobel and Sofie Hess.
Download or read book A Colonial Affair written by Danna Agmon and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Danna Agmon's gripping microhistory is a vivid guide to the "Nayiniyappa Affair" in the French colony of Pondicherry, India. The surprising and shifting fates of Nayiniyappa and his family form the basis of this story of global mobilization, which is replete with merchants, missionaries, local brokers, government administrators, and even the French royal family. Agmon's compelling account draws readers into the social, economic, religious, and political interactions that defined the European colonial experience in India and elsewhere. Her portrayal of imperial sovereignty in France's colonies as it played out in the life of one beleaguered family allows readers to witness interactions between colonial officials and locals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller and one of the best historical fiction books of 2016 and 2017! “A juicy answer to Ron Chernow's Alexander Hamilton…” --Cosmopolitan Set against the dramatic backdrop of the American Revolution, and featuring a cast of legendary characters, The Hamilton Affair tells the sweeping, tumultuous, true story of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, from passionate and tender beginnings of their romance to his fateful duel on the banks of the Hudson River. Hamilton was a bastard and orphan, raised in the Caribbean and desperate for legitimacy, who became one of the American Revolution's most dashing--and improbable--heroes. Admired by George Washington, scorned by Thomas Jefferson, Hamilton was a lightning rod: the most controversial leader of the new nation. Elizabeth was the wealthy, beautiful, adventurous daughter of the respectable Schuyler clan--and a pioneering advocate for women. Together, the unlikely couple braved the dangers of war, the perils of seduction, the anguish of infidelity, and the scourge of partisanship that menaced their family and the country itself. With flawless writing, brilliantly drawn characters, and epic scope, The Hamilton Affair tells a story of love forged in revolution and tested by the bitter strife of young America, and will take its place among the greatest novels of American history ever written.
Download or read book A Family Affair written by Nadine Bismuth and published by ARACHNIDE EDITIONS. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wry, savvy novel of untidy modern relationships, A Family Affair confirms award-winning author Nadine Bismuth's place as a remarkable chronicler of contemporary middle-class mores in the manner of Jonathan Franzen, John Irving, and Lorrie Moore. Award-winning novelist and screenwriter for film and television Nadine Bismuth has returned with an unsparing portrait of twenty-first century life. In A Family Affair, love is the first casualty and deceit -- towards others, towards oneself -- the norm. Kitchen designer Magalie is being cheated upon and so cheats in turn, in the office and with a divorced policeman who has hired her. Her partner, Mathieu, has no idea how to be, and the policeman Guillaume no idea what he wants. So begins a story of messy relationships wrested against the odds from the detritus of failed marriages, the demands of professional lives, and the pull of the internet and its false messages of perfection. With an assiduous eye that is both clinical and sympathetic, Bismuth's elegant and highly readable novel captures the alienating nature of contemporary life and sheds light on this, our strange new world full of unrequited yearning in a sea of seeming plenty.

Book Synopsis The Dreyfus Affair by : Piers Paul Read
Download or read book The Dreyfus Affair written by Piers Paul Read and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent, ambitious and a rising star in the French artillery, Captain Alfred Dreyfus appeared to have everything: family, money, and the prospect of a post on the General Staff. But his rapid rise had also made him enemies - many of them aristocratic officers in the army's High Command who resented him because he was middle-class, meritocratic and a Jew. In October 1894, the torn fragments of an unsigned memo containing military secrets were retrieved by a cleaning lady from the waste paper basket of Colonel Maximilien von Schwartzkoppen of the German embassy in Paris. When French intelligence pieced the document back together to uncover proof of a spy in their midst, Captain Dreyfus, on slender evidence, was charged with selling military secrets to the Germans, found guilty of treason by unanimous verdict and sentenced to life imprisonment on the notorious Devil's Island. The fight to free the wrongfully convicted Dreyfus - over twelve long years, through many trials - is a story rife with heroes and villains, courage and cowardice, dissimulation and deceit. One of the most infamous miscarriages of justice in history, the Dreyfus affair divided France, stunned the world and unleashed violent hatreds and anti-Semitic passions which offered a foretaste of what was to play out in the long, bloody twentieth century to come. Today, amid charged debates over national and religious identity across the globe, its lessons throw into sharp relief the conflicts of the present. In the hands of historian, biographer and prize-winning novelist Piers Paul Read, this masterful epic of the struggle between a minority seeking justice and a military establishment determined to save face comes dramatically alive for a new generation.

Book excerpt: An extramarital affair is, according to Dr. Herbert Stream, a form of neurotic behavior that reflects the person's unresolved chlidhood conflicts and present level of maturity. Using numerous case histories that provide excellent illustrations, he describes conflicted marriages and the expectations, dissapointments, and frustrations of those who use affairs as a means of escape. Issues such as mate choice, types of marriages, spouses' reactions, and unconsious compliance add depth and complexity to this important and often provocative subject.
