This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with Early Modern English psalm translations. It focusses on the connection between inspiration and formal perfection as it appears in George Wither's "A Preparation to the Psalter", Philip Sidney's "The Defence of Poesy", "The Sidney Psalter" and "The Bay Psalm Book". Taking into account theological, philosophical, and literary contexts of the time, it reveals the struggle to find a suitable language in praise of God as a main concern of Early Modern religious writers, and presents concepts which are highly relevant for the religious poetry of the time. Indeed, the Psalms are a marvelous spiritual resource through which the Holy Spirit * teaches us how to pray, * leads us to repentance, * anchors us in both realism and hope, * reveals the reality of exuberant joy in the Lord, and * gives us a richer understanding of God. The Companion to the Psalter provides a quick orientation to all 150 Psalms -- making it an excellent guide for anyone who wants to use the Psalms in their Bible study or daily devotions as well as a versatile reference for pastors in their homiletic preparation. Beckstrand treats each Psalm individually, offering an outline and brief commentary that explains key words and concepts as well as suggestions for reflection and a prayer. Additional material includes a chart dividing the psalms into key groupings plus an appendix showing how each psalm fits into the lectionary. With Companion to the Psalter at your fingertips, you'll be able to immerse yourself in the hymnal that Jesus used -- and therefore better understand our Lord Jesus Christ. Robert G. Beckstrand is a retired Lutheran pastor who served ELCA congregations in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa during a half-century of ministry. He now resides in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Book Synopsis Psalm Culture and Early Modern English Literature by : Hannibal Hamlin
Download or read book Psalm Culture and Early Modern English Literature written by Hannibal Hamlin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-02-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psalm Culture and Early Modern English Literature examines the powerful influence of the biblical Psalms on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English literature. It explores the imaginative, beautiful, ingenious and sometimes ludicrous and improbable ways in which the Psalms were 'translated' from ancient Israel to Renaissance and Reformation England. No biblical book was more often or more diversely translated than the Psalms during the period. In church psalters, sophisticated metrical paraphrases, poetic adaptations, meditations, sermons, commentaries, and through biblical allusions in secular poems, plays, and prose fiction, English men and women interpreted the Psalms, refashioning them according to their own personal, religious, political, or aesthetic agendas. The book focuses on literature from major writers like Shakespeare and Milton to less prominent ones like George Gascoigne, Mary Sidney Herbert and George Wither, but it also explores the adaptations of the Psalms in musical settings, emblems, works of theology and political polemic.

Book Synopsis On Biblical Poetry by : F.W. Dobbs-Allsopp
Download or read book On Biblical Poetry written by F.W. Dobbs-Allsopp and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Biblical Poetry takes a fresh look at the nature of biblical Hebrew poetry beyond its currently best-known feature, parallelism. F.W. Dobbs-Allsopp argues that biblical poetry is in most respects just like any other verse tradition, and therefore biblical poems should be read and interpreted like other poems, using the same critical tools and with the same kinds of guiding assumptions in place. He offers a series of programmatic essays on major facets of biblical verse, each aspiring to alter currently regnant conceptualizations in the field and to show that attention to aspects of prosody--rhythm, lineation, and the like--allied with close reading can yield interesting, valuable, and even pleasurable interpretations. What distinguishes the verse of the Bible, says Dobbs-Allsopp, is its historicity and cultural specificity, those peculiar encrustations and encumbrances that typify all human artifacts. Both the literary and the historical, then, are in view throughout. The concluding essay elaborates a close reading of Psalm 133. This chapter enacts the final movement to the set of literary and historical arguments mounted throughout the volume--an example of the holistic staging which, Dobbs-Allsopp argues, is much needed in the field of Biblical Studies.
