Book excerpt: This reflection, though brutally honest, provides insight to the conflicts that face the children of ministers, pastors, religious clergy, deacons, and church leaders. It challenges fellow Christians, to nurture the lives of these children without punishing judgements. This work provokes congregants and leaders to nurture preachers' kids, and provide heartfelt guidance and vigilant prayer. It encourages prayer- warriors, to guard over the hearts of your preachers' kids. The book leads the reader toward self-examination and self-correction, love and respect of oneself. The author makes a noteworhty disclaimer, 'I do not have a license in counseling, a degree in psychology or theology. I am not an elder or deacon in any church, nor do I hold office as a board member on any religious organization. I am not a minister, pastor or evangelist. I am neither an acclaimed author nor an authority of any kind. Forgive me if I have misquoted scripture or taken verses out of context. I hope the Bible verses I have quoted throughout this booklet would not seem preachy; but then again, I am a preacher's daughter-smile. I trust that, these scriptures will grab at your hearts and soothe your soul-wounds. I hope they will provide a new perspective and they would be as you have never heard them or thought of them before'. The author writes from a from a unique perspective that of a peracher's kid. 'I am the voice of a group that is easily misunderstood and even shunned. We are the group that, 'should know better'. Just being born into the subculture of 'preachers' kids' we are automatically judged by all, (the righteous and the unrighteous alike). We are 'expected to...' by default, 'be good, be upright, make no mistakes, be all things to all men all of the time. We are to be mature in all judgments from the moment of birth, and on and on it goes. Few can comprehend our journey toward our Father on a road less traveled'. This journey will be enlightening and comforting to all who read it. It will bring hope to those who are confused and lost. The book although empathetic to all parties, makes all accountable for their behaviors towards others and to the Heavenly Father. It is with great love and sensitivity that the author leads the reaader to finding relationship with Jesus. Just for a moment the reader can walk in the shoes of peachers' kids with understanding and empathy. It brings much-needed direction and guidance. The author attempts to bridge the gap between 'all of you' and 'preachers' kids. It also attempts to bridge the disonnect between preachers' kids and Jesus. This work is raw and honest as well as a relection of a lost generation who need to know the true power of redemption and the priceless gift of grace and love.

Book excerpt: The book The Daughter of a Preacher Man written by Lanelle Perry gives us a snapshot and provocative look into the family life of a preacher's kid (PK). The author takes us on an arduous journey into the interior walls of family life for a PK. She shows the confusing, inflexible and unyielding disciplines of strong pastoral doctrine. As the writer traveled the bivouac of life, she catalogues her jaunt with excellent precision. She gathers the ingredients of each experience, educates herself and gains spiritual renewal. She gathers the knowledge, understanding and wisdom, through life experiences and godly intervention, that life can be a difficult beast. Lanelle Perry penetrates our mind and spirit with the loving kindness attained through the pursuit of life. We will profit from her profile as she illuminates the landscape of a holy and loving family. Lanelle Perry brings a writing style that delivers a lucid view of the moralistic conflict faced in growing up under the authority of a Preacher Man. Lanelle Perry, a daughter of nobility, slowly unfolds the life of a PK to the reader and gives us a renewed awakening to the fact that God is the ultimate authority over all things in heaven and also beneath heaven Lanelle Perry encourages us to be "stewards of our young." The author's growth, love, dedication, and forgiveness are conclusive proof that "God is love." For those PKs, who have not forgiven their parents, this book will help you to find the way to do so. To those outsiders that wonder about the attributes of PKs, there is no greater love than the gifts that God loans us, and one day will return to God. I encourage you to bring the family together for a quiet reading of TheDaughter of a Preacher Man. Gregory V. Jones, Jr. PhD

Book excerpt: An “excellent true-crime study” of a female serial killer given the death penalty for poisoning at least three men between 1973 and 1989 (Publishers Weekly). Widowed Blanche Taylor Moore was about to lose her second spouse to symptoms that mysteriously mirrored those that killed her first husband—as well as her previous boyfriend. When an investigation reveals arsenic poisoning, the hideous truth about the wife and mother comes to light. Did the abuse Blanche suffered as a child at the hands of her alcoholic father turn her into a murderer she became? In this riveting true crime account, critically acclaimed journalist Jim Schutze explores the harrowing motivation and chilling details of the lives, loves, and victims of North Carolina’s oldest living inmate on death row. “Involving . . . chronicle of the murderous career of a Bible Belt Borgia.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: All parents want their daughters to marry godly young men. But which qualities, specifically, should they be looking for? What will you say when that certain young man sits down in your living room, sweaty-palmed and tongue-tied, and asks your permission to marry your daughter? What criteria should he meet before the two of them join together for life? What He Must Be... If He Wants to Marry My Daughter outlines ten qualities parents should look for in a son-in-law, including trustworthiness, a willingness to lead his family, an understanding of his wife's role, and various spiritual leadership qualities. Author Voddie Baucham follows up on his popular book Family Driven Faith with this compelling apologetic of biblical manhood. By studying the principles outlined in his book, parents who want their daughter to marry a godly man-as well as those who want their sons to become godly men-will be well equipped to help their children look for and develop these God-honoring qualities.

Book excerpt: One of Christian fiction's most beloved authors of the gentle read offers a new series called Annie's People, set in Paradise, Pa. It dishes up the same sort of faith-filled story line and Plain People characters Lewis's fans have come to expect. At age 20, Annie Zook is a budding artist, but her conservative Amish community forbids its members to draw or paint pictures. How will she choose between family and vocation? The disappearance of a small child years ago has left scars on various characters, and new developments in the case threaten to open old wounds. Annie's best friend in the community, Esther Hochstetler, finds that her marriage to an abusive man has become a nightmare, while Annie's pen pal, the wealthy Colorado "Englisher" Louisa Stratford (conveniently an art teacher) visits Annie in Paradise to heal from a broken engagement. Both women explore the possibilities of change. Romance, of course, is always waiting in the wings, especially in the character of handsome "Englisher" Ben Martin. Culinary details, glimpses into the workings of Amish life and strong character development help readers stay with the story's multiple changes of perspective. Plot hints in the final pages will keep Lewis's loyal fans eagerly anticipating the next installment.

Church is not really what she focused on throughout life. As a girl, I paid more attention to all the boys. As a woman had struggled with drugs, men, more drugs and all kinds of non-spiritual things that were not of God. In the end, it all comes to a climatic end with abuse, betrayal and a way of escape at the cost of almost losing her daughter.
