Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was a trailblazing twentieth-century British photojournalist but George Rodger lived in the adventurous tradition of nineteenth-century explorers. Cofounding Magnum Photos in 1947 with Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, the modest Rodger was eclipsed by his partnersuntil now. Rodger's Indiana Jones-style escapades are legendary and worth the telling. He once covered over 75,000 miles of "old Africa" in a Land Rover. He even survived a white rhino charge. He went on to become a key photographer of African tribal life. During World War II he covered sixty-one countries for Life magazine. He was chased through three hundred miles of Burmese jungles by both the Japanese army and a tribe of headhunters. And he was the first to record the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He quit photography when he realized he was arranging "thousands of Jewish corpses in nice photographic compositions." In fascinating detail Carol Naggar not only recalls Roger's singular life and artistic contribution, but she also provides an in-depth look at the complex dynamics of ethics, violence, and photojournalism. As such, it places the legacy of George Rodger within a broader sociohistorical context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malevolence (and its causes) has been central to film since its inception; the birth of film coinciding with a fascination with crime, death, murder, horror, etc. Films which address the problem of evil, however, are less frequent and fewer in quantity; especially films which respond to a body of thought – philosophical or theological – which has deliberated on the topic of evil over the centuries. Cinema and Evil: Moral Responsibility and the “Dangerous” Film addresses these films. It explores the legacy of evil from Manicheanism to Arendt, assessing the alternative definitions offered by philosophers, theologians and writers per se, on its problematic status. It then considers how the films of filmmakers such as Fritz Lang, Orson Welles, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Michael Haneke, Gus Van Sant, and Lynne Ramsay have responded to the problem of evil in their films. In case by case studies, filmmakers’ response to “evil” events, whether those such as the Holocaust or Columbine, in which evil is used as a descriptor for human behaviour, is explored. The book refers to these as “dangerous” films, tasking us with the need to consider evil as a problem which is also our responsibility. It argues that these filmmakers have been at the forefront of ethical deliberation on evil.

The focus of this novel is on the French Canadians migration from Quebec into northern United States in search of a better way of life. The main thread follows the family of the narrator, Silvie Marie Audette. She is a young girl who feels a loss of identity due to the circumstances in which she lives. She and her mother reside in a community that abuts the lumber camp where her father was a lumberjack. However, he died from an accident during Silvies infancy. Because he had built a log cabin on lumber mill property, Silvie and her mother are entitled to remain there even after his death. Silvie believes that she is stuck in a place where she doesnt belong. In Search of Self touches all emotions. Silvie and her boy cousin, who also lives in the complex, pack their teen years with adventure. There are comical moments, events both heroic and tragic, and surprise elements to capture the readers interests. Silvie Marie Audette is faced with a problem of identity. She struggles to the end for a satisfactory solution to her dilemma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, the art of translation has been misconstrued as a solitary affair. Yet, from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, groups of translators comprised of specialists of different languages formed in order to transport texts from one language and culture to another. Collaborative Translation uncovers the collaborative practices occluded in Renaissance theorizing of translation to which our individualist notions of translation are indebted. Leading translation scholars as well as professional translators have been invited here to detail their experiences of collaborative translation, as well as the fruits of their research into this neglected form of translation. This volume offers in-depth analysis of rich, sometimes explosive, relationships between authors and their translators. Their negotiations of cooperation and control, assistance and interference, are shown here to shape the translation of prominent modern authors such as Günter Grass, Vladimir Nabokov and Haruki Murakami. The advent of printing, the cultural institutions and the legal and political environment that regulate the production of translated texts have each formalized many of the inherently social and communicative practices of translation. Yet this publishing regime has been profoundly disrupted by the technologies that are currently revolutionizing collaborative translation techniques. This volume details the impact that this technological and environmental evolution is having upon the translator, proliferating sites and communities of collaboration, transforming traditional relationships with authors and editors, revisers, stage directors, actors and readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by Methuen Drama, the collected dramatic works of Bertolt Brecht are presented in the most comprehensive and authoritative editions of Brecht's plays in the English language. The seventh volume of Brecht's Collected Plays contains the plays which Brecht wrote during his six-year stay in the United States from 1942 to 1948. The Visions of Simone Machard is a French resistance version of the Joan of Arc story. Schweyk in the Second World War transposes Hasek's 'good soldier' to the Prague of Hitler and Heydrich. The Caucasian Chalk Circle, based on the biblical story of the judgement of Solomon, was originally written for production on Broadway, with W. H. Auden responsible for the verse. A morality masterpiece, the play powerfully demonstrates Brecht's pioneering theatrical techniques and has since become one of his most popular works. The translations are ideal for both study and performance. The volume is accompanied by a full introduction and notes by the series editor John Willett and includes Brecht's own notes and relevant texts as well as all the important textual variants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Haneke is one of the most important directors working in Europe today, with films such as Funny Games (1997), Code Unknown (2000), and Hidden (2005) interrogating modern ethical dilemmas with forensic clarity and merciless insight. Haneke's films frequently implicate both the protagonists and the audience in the making of their misfortunes, yet even in the barren nihilism of The Seventh Continent (1989) and Time of the Wolf (2003) a dark strain of optimism emerges, releasing each from its terrible and inescapable guilt. It is this contingent and unlikely possibility that we find in Haneke's cinema: a utopian Europe. This collection celebrates, explicates, and sometimes challenges the worldview of Haneke's films. It examines the director's central themes and preoccupations—bourgeois alienation, modes and critiques of spectatorship, the role of the media—and analyzes otherwise marginalized aspects of his work, such as the function of performance and stardom, early Austrian television productions, the romanticism of The Piano Teacher (2001), and the 2007 shot-for-shot remake of Funny Games.
