Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas and Petroleum Engines: A Practical Treatise on the Internal Combustion Engine This book is intended to aid students and practical men in studying Gas and Petroleum Engines, and the principles that underlie and control their action, so as to put the practical 'man in a position to test the performance of these engines, and to make an intelligent use of his own experience and observations. Several years' experience in the teaching of technical students and practical workmen has led me to bring out this work, which I have endeavoured to make complete in itself as a text-book on the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Audels Gas Engine Manual: A Practical Treatise Relating to the Theory and Management of Gas, Gasoline and Oil Engines, Including Chapters on Producer Gas Plants, Marine Motors and Automobile Engines A complete study of the gas engine problem would involve consideration of the two general classes of motors operated by the expansive energy of combustible gases, namely - piston engines with reciprocating action, and turbine engines with rotary motion. Conditions relating to the latter, however, are in such an experimental stage, that very little of practical interest can be stated about them at the present time. On the other hand, the various types of piston engine have been developed to a stage of high efficiency, and, therefore, will be exclusively considered in this work, with occasional references to the other type for the purpose of comparative illustration. The gas engine belongs to the general class of motors which convert natural energy existing in the form of heat into mechanical energy, which is subsequently utilized for the performance st* useful work. These motors are usually called heat engines, and may be divided into two general classes, according to the manner in which the heat is applied to the working substance of the engine, as follows: 1. External combustion engines, driven by the expansive energy of steam or air heated from an external source through the walls of (lie vessel containing the working substance, such as the various types of steam and hot air engines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas and Oil Engines and Gas-Producers: A Treatise on Theoretical and Mechanical Developments of the Modern Internal-Combustion Motor, Its Application to the Production of Efficient Power Units, and the Latest Designs of Fuel Producers Classification of Heat Engines. The heat engine is at present the most important of all the available generators of power. Its purpose is to convert into work the heat derived from the combustion of fuel. Heat engines may be divided into two broad classes, according to where the combustion of the fuel takes place. In one class the combustion takes place entirely outside the working cylinder, the heat of combustion being transmitted by conduction through the walls of a containing vessel to the substance which constitutes the active working agent. Such engines may be called external-combustion motors. The most common example of this class is the steam engine. Another example, which is but little used, is the hot-air engine. If the combustion takes place inside the engine itself, or in a communi cating vessel, so that the products of combustion act directly on the engine, We have an engine of the second class - the so-called internal combustion motor. Gas and oil engines are the most common examples of this type of motor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Editor therefore hopes that this little volume will be especially welcome to non-technical readers who like to keep ahead Of the times in matters Of such universal importance. One chapter deals exclusively with the theory of the gas engine, but the non-technical mind Should have no fear, for mathematics have been as far as possible avoided. It may also serve to dispel wrongful notions concerning the practical limits of the efficiency of gas engines which. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas and Oil Engine In this edition special attention has been paid to the oil engine, in view of its rapid rate of present development and the probability of its very extensive use for many new purposes, such as motor cars. Many engineers are now paying attention to the oil engine, to whom the subject is unfamiliar and in the hope of proving useful to such new men on the work, the author has gone caref'ully into the discussion of the chemical nature of petroleum and the different methods of vaporising heavy oils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas and Oil Engines and Gas-Producers: A Treatise on the Modern Development of the Internal-Combustion Motor and Efficient Methods of Fuel Economy and Power Production In recent years, such marvelous advances have been made in the engineering and scientific fields, and so rapid has been the evolution of mechanical and constructive processes and methods, that a distinct need has been created for a series of practical working guides, of convenient size and low cost, embodying the accumulated results of experience and the most approved modern practice along a great variety of lines. To fill this acknowledged need, is the special purpose of the series of handbooks to which this volume belongs. In the preparation of this series, it has been the aim of the publishers to lay special stress on the practical side of each subject, as distinguished from mere theoretical or academic discussion. Each volume is written by a well-known expert of acknowledged authority in his special line, and is based on a most careful study of practical needs and up-to-date methods as developed under the conditions of actual practice in the field, the shop, the mill, the power house, the drafting room, the engine room, etc. These volumes are especially adapted for purposes of self-instruction and home study.
