Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise in the Manufacture of Paper: In All Its Branches The object of this book is to give a scientific and practical explanation of the different processes by which paper is made, to serve as a guide for those who desire to build mills, and to be a helpmate for paper-makers generally. The facts and rules given therein are derived from experience, and especial care has been taken that the working-man may not look in vain for those practical details, which are often of more value to him than the most brilliant scientific explanations. The preparation of pulp from waste paper, as well as from straw, wood, and other vegetable fibres, has received the attention due to its importance. The drawings represent machinery which is in active operation, built by first-class engineers, and of approved construction; they are carefully made in correct proportions, and many of them will serve for working plans in the machine-shop. The consumption of paper, though it has increased enormously of late years, must still grow with the progress of civilization, and will in the future assume proportions, of which we can at the present time form no adequate idea. New raw materials are constantly required to satisfy these demands, and the processes of their transformation, which constitute the principal feature of modern paper-manufacture, cover already too large a field to be thoroughly mastered by one mind, - a fact, of which the author was fully conscious when he undertook this task. But, having acquainted himself with the theory of the art by studying the sciences which form its basis, and having acquired practical experience by the manufacture of fine and coarse papers from rags, waste paper, straw, &c., by the erection and management of four different mills in Germany and America, and by visits to hundreds of other ones in different countries, he determined to make the attempt. As the following lines were gradually penned, their progress was frequently arrested by deficiencies in the author's knowledge, which could only be supplied from the experience of other paper-makers and machinists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Pulp and Paper Making: A Practical Treatise During thirty-seven years of experience in the pulp and paper industry the author has frequently and repeatedly felt the need of a practical work on the manufacture of pulp and paper, as carried on in America, that would not be so abstruse and technical as to be beyond the grasp of the average papermaker, and which at the same time would not merely skim the surface of the various subdivisions of the art. In the present volume an attempt has been made to describe the equipment and processes actually used in pulp and paper plants on this continent today, giving such practical information as would be of help to men working around these plants from day to day. It is hoped that the present volume will be useful to practical papermakers and, at the same time, that it may possibly be of service to technical men not intimately in touch with the pulp and paper industry and desiring to know the salient facts about it. No attempt has been made to describe every piece of equipment ever used in the industry. Neither has the author attempted to deal with the historical aspect. Also, while recognizing the great importance of chemistry in connection with papermaking, no chemical considerations have been introduced which would not readily be comprehended by one with no special knowledge of that science. It may seem strange to some readers of this book that the author has not devoted more space to detailed information concerning bag paper - with which branch of the industry he is particularly identified. In the first place, relatively few of the readers of this book are likely to be especially interested in bag paper, and if overmuch space were devoted to this subject readers interested in other branches might justifiably feel that their interests had been neglected. Of course, this difficulty might have been avoided by giving equally detailed attention to every variety of paper, but such a treatment would have necessitated a much larger book and, consequently, one so expensive as to be beyond the reach of many men actually engaged in the industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Cellulose: A Practical Treatise for Paper and Cellulose Technologists, Managers and Superintendents Before complying with the request of Herr Fisher, publisher in Berlin, to compile for his technological library, a small work on "the manufacture of cellulose," I have first considered whether there existed a necessity for such. Although several short treatises on the comparatively new industrial branch, the manufacture of cellulose have already appeared, the main published information has been in the several volumes of the Papier Zeitung, and other trade journals which contain a number of articles about special departments of the industry and relating questions. The above mentioned compilations are treated in a general way and are short, forming chapters of larger works on the manufacture of paper, while the different articles in the papers are so much distributed among others, partly also connected with personal controversies and views, that I have become convinced of the necessity and the meritoriousness of the labor. To sift this comparatively valuable material, to complete it with personal experiences, and by adding practical advice, to create an up to date book on the subject of Cellulose seemed to me eminently desirable and I therefore seized with eagerness the task assigned me. I also communicated with some men closely connected with the manufacture of cellulose, and to them I am obliged for valuable details. I have found, however, that it is impossible to give an entirely exhaustive account of this branch, because not only are the many different systems in use in the manufacture of cellulose patented, but almost every manufacturer endeavors to invest his process with all possible secrecy. I have consequently treated copiously but one of the best introduced processes, and the others I have but touched, sketching in the principal features of each. In starting the book I adopted the principle of treating the manufacture in its successive phases, and with each chapter to consider the peculiarities of the different systems one after the other.
