Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Chemistry for High School Students Children are fond of pulling things apart; perhaps they wish to try to see how things are made and of what they are made. Older people are in some respects like children; they also want to know how things are made and of what they are made. But the objects of their curiosity are not, as a rule, articles manufactured by other men, but rather the vast number of things which are found in nature, such as water, air, wood, stone, coal, flour, fruits, eggs, etc. Grown people have done much at this taking things apart and have found out much about the composition of many things in nature and how they are made. They have called the process of taking things apart to learn their composition analysis. In many cases also men have learned to put things to gether to make substances and this is called synthesis. The people who do this kind of work are said to be chemists, and the study connected with the work is called chemistry. It is a very large study and its importance is very great, for it has done much to improve many of our manufactures. Both pupil and teacher must be considered. The pupil needs a book which is written plainly, illustrated fully, and applied practically; which stimulates interest in chemistry. And which can be studied profitably. The teacher needs a b )ok in whit h the text is carefully selected, judiciously apportioned. And properly arranged; which provides teaching material, and which can be taught successfully. The author believes his practical chemistry meets these requirements. The text includes the facts and principles suitable for beginners. N 0 important topic has been omitted. The selection is varied. Ner mitting the use of the book in different kinds of classes. The topics suggested by the College Entrance Examination Board and the Board of Regents (new York) have been incorporated. The style and arrangement are clear Short sentences, brief para graphs, explanatory examples, lettered subdivisions, numbered sec tions, instructive topical headings. Unusual care has been taken to write clearly such topics as symbols, formulas, equations, atomic weights, molecular weights, and valence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Chemistry: Inorganic and Organic This small work on qualitative analysis is intended to supply a text-book for students working according to the syllabus of the elementary stage of Practical Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. The substances for which tests are given are those contained in the new syllabus (1894), but it is hoped that the methods given for their detection and separation are such that the student will have nothing to unlearn when he proceeds to a more advanced course of qualitative analysis. Directions are given in the making up of reagents for students who are working without the aid of a teacher. Objection may be taken by some to the way in which it is recommended that results should be stated, but the authors find after several years practical experience in laboratory teaching, that this method leads to clearness of expression, and the rapid examination of a student's work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Chemistry: A New Text-Book for High Schools and Academies The chief significance of the foregoing is that, as far as possible, each pupil is to perform the experiments for himself, make his own observations, and draw his own conclusions. This is important, whether some of the experiments have been performed by the instructor before the class or not. In every case there must be care that the conclusions arrived at are founded upon actual facts. See that each pupil has a small note-book, and that he always has it at hand when he is making his experiments. See that the details of all experiments made by him are recorded by him in this book at the time of the experiment, not subsequently. In addition to the description of the Operation, the record should contain an account of all observed phenomena, and the conclusions drawn from them. The ability to observe accurately and completely, and the ability to draw proper conclusions from observed facts, are the two greatest benefits to be derived from the study of general chemistry. Make frequent and careful examinations of the pupil's notes, seeking to lead him to accurate observation, to intelligent discrimination between essential and merely incidental conditions and results of an experiment, to correctness of conclusions, and to precision and concise ness of statement. Do not let your pupils get the idea that they, chemists; do not think that you ought to make chemists' of them. After this course has been completed, a course in some good school of applied science will be needed for the pupil who desires to become a chemist.' The author would be glad to receive suggestions from teachers using this book, or to answer any inquiries they may make. He may be addressed at Cleveland, Ohio. He gratefully acknowledges the aid given him by many. Especial mention is due to Professor Albert W. Smith of the Case School of Applied Science; his work shows on almost every page. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Chemistry, Consisting of Directions for Performing a Series of Experiments: With Test Questions on the Experiments, and Simple Problems for Investigation All these means of acquiring a knowledge of chemistry have been steadily kept in View in the preparation of this manual. I have long held the opinion that a text book for beginners in chemistry should consist mainly of directions for performing a series of experiments. These experiments should be so graded and arranged that all the prominent facts and principles of the science could be re-discovered, as it were, by any intelligent pupil who performed the experiments and reasoned upon the phenomena they presented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises: With Outlines for the Study of Chemistry to Accompany and Elementary Text The primary object of the authors in preparing this book is to place in the hands of the science teachers in the State a laboratory manual adapted to the average high-school requirements. In it we have endeavored to emphasize the value of laboratory in struction in the laboratory. The aim is to give the student facts, practically of his own finding, before a discussion and correlation of these facts. Our experience in teaching has led us to the conclusion that to reach the best results a student of chemistry must first be given experimental work. In this way his interest is sufficiently aroused to hear with profit descriptive lectures, or to read with some attention the discussion of facts and principles as found in elementary text-books. To this end he is carefully guided in his experimental work, after which he is expected to study the subject of his experiment in one or more of the texts referred to at the end of each exercise. These texts are not necessarily the best that might be given, but they are in many cases the only ones available to the pupil. They are in all cases those found to be at hand in class use or otherwise in the high schools of this State.
