Book excerpt: Dissolved oxygen will be the major oxidant of copper containers used for the disposal of nuclear fuel waste deep underground in the granitic rock of the Canadian Shield. Despite widespread use of copper alloys in corrosive environments, the mechanism of oxygen reduction on copper is poorly understood, and there is an even greater lack of reliable kinetic data from which predictions of corrosion rates and potential might be made. This potentiostatic study was conducted to investigate the mechanism of oxygen reduction under conditions simulating those in a nuclear fuel waste disposal vault and to provide kinetic data for use in models to predict the long-term corrosion behaviour of copper containers.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes the expected corrosion behavior of nuclear fuel waste containers in a conceptual Canadian disposal vault. The container materials considered are dilute titanium alloys and oxygen-free copper. The report presents various models that have been developed to predict container lifetimes, including the currently used model which does not take into account limitation of crevice corrosion and an outline of a model in which crevice corrosion is limited by repassivation. The disposal vault conditions considered change with time as the initially trapped oxygen is consumed and as the heat and radiation produced by the waste decay. The appendices contain detailed reassessments of the corrosion behavior of the two types of containers, in which model assumptions are examined and failure modes discussed.

This book is clearly organized around the main topic areas comprising electrolytes, electrodes, development of the potential differences in combining electrolytes with electrodes, the electrochemical double layer, mass transport, and charge transfer, making the subject matter more accessible. In the second part, several important areas for materials science are described in more detail. These chapters bridge the gap between the introductory textbooks and the more specialized literature. They feature the electrodeposition of metals and alloys, electrochemistry of oxides and semiconductors, intrinsically conducting polymers, and aspects of nanotechnology with an emphasis on the codeposition of nanoparticles. This book provides a good introduction into electrochemistry for the graduate student. For the research student as well as for the advanced reader there is sufficient information on the basic problems in special chapters. The book is suitable for students and researchers in chemistry, physics, engineering, as well as materials science. - Introduction into electrochemistry- Metal and alloy electrodeposition- Oxides and semiconductors, corrosion- Intrinsically conducting polymers- Codeposition of nanoparticles, multilayers

Book excerpt: This book covers a significant number of R&D projects, performed mostly after 2000, devoted to the understanding and prevention of performance degradation processes in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). The extent and severity of performance degradation processes in PEFCs were recognized rather gradually. Indeed, the recognition overlapped with a significant number of industrial dem- strations of fuel cell powered vehicles, which would suggest a degree of technology maturity beyond the resaolution of fundamental failure mechanisms. An intriguing question, therefore, is why has there been this apparent delay in addressing fun- mental performance stability requirements. The apparent answer is that testing of the power system under fully realistic operation conditions was one prerequisite for revealing the nature and extent of some key modes of PEFC stack failure. Such modes of failure were not exposed to a similar degree, or not at all, in earlier tests of PEFC stacks which were not performed under fully relevant conditions, parti- larly such tests which did not include multiple on–off and/or high power–low power cycles typical for transportation and mobile power applications of PEFCs. Long-term testing of PEFCs reported in the early 1990s by both Los Alamos National Laboratory and Ballard Power was performed under conditions of c- stant cell voltage, typically near the maximum power point of the PEFC.
