Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, China has built 25,000 km of dedicated highspeed railway—more than the rest of the world combined. What can we learn from this remarkable experience? China’s High-Speed Rail Development examines the Chinese experience to draw lessons for countries considering investing in high-speed rail. The report scrutinizes the planning and delivery mechanisms that enabled the rapid construction of the high-speed rail system. It highlights the role of long-term planning, consistent plan execution, and a joint venture structure that ensures active participation of provincial and local governments in project planning and financing. Traffic on China’s high-speed trains has grown to 1.7 billion passengers a year. The study examines the characteristics of the markets for which high-speed rail is competitive in China. It discusses the pricing and service design considerations that go into making high-speed rail services competitive with other modes and factors such as good urban connectivity that make the service attractive to customers. One of the most remarkable aspects of the Chinese experience is the rapid pace of high-quality construction. The report looks at the role of strong capacity development within and cooperation among China Railway Corporation, rail manufacturers, universities, research institutions, laboratories, and engineering centers that allowed for rapid technological advancement and localization of technology. It describes the project delivery structures and incentives for delivering quality and timely results. Finally, the report analyzes the financial and economic sustainability of the investment in high-speed rail. It finds that a developing country can price high-speed rail services affordably and still achieve financial viability, but this requires very high passenger density. Economic viability similarly depends on high passenger density.

The role of transport has proved indispensable in this unprecedented rapid urbanisation and economic growth. As the first research-focused book dedicated to this important topic, the Handbook on Transport and Urban Transformation in China offers new insight into the various opportunities and challenges brought by fast-paced motorization and urban development, and explores them in broad spatial-economic, environmental, social, and institutional dimensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranging from Geneva to Pyongyang, this remarkable book takes readers on an odyssey through one of the most extraordinary forgotten tragedies of the Cold War: the "return" of over 90,000 people, most of them ethnic Koreans, from Japan to North Korea from 1959 onward. Presented to the world as a humanitarian venture and conducted under the supervision of the International Red Cross, the scheme was actually the result of political intrigues involving the governments of Japan, North Korea, the Soviet Union, and the United States. The great majority of the Koreans who journeyed to North Korea in fact originated from the southern part of the Korean peninsula, and many had lived all their lives in Japan. Though most left willingly, persuaded by propaganda that a bright new life awaited them in North Korea, the author draws on recently declassified documents to reveal the covert pressures used to hasten the departure of this unwelcome ethnic minority. For most, their new home proved a place of poverty and hardship; for thousands, it was a place of persecution and death. In rediscovering their extraordinary personal stories, this book also casts new light on the politics of the Cold War and on present-day tensions between North Korea and the rest of the world.

This is the most recent study in the series (released in April, 1991). This volume follows the format of the previous studies, offering a broad sweep of its subject matter. The 50 chapters - contributed by Chinese scholars in government, universities and private research centres - are divided into five major parts. Each section begins with an overview which summarises and comments on the main points in each of the chapters. The volume offers a detailed examination of China's economy, and the political and social factors currently facing the leadership in Beijing.

They employ a variety of technologies, from basic management systems to more advanced application systems, with information technology – including wireless communication, computational technologies, floating car data/cellular data such as sensing technologies and video vehicle detection – playing a major role. This book presents the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Information Technology and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITITS 2017), held in Xi’an, People's Republic of China, in June 2017. The conference provides a platform for professionals and researchers from industry and academia to present and discuss recent advances in the field of information technology and intelligent transportation systems; organizations and researchers involved in these fields, including distinguished academics from around the world, explore theoretical and applied topics such as emergency vehicle notification systems, automatic road enforcement, collision avoidance systems and cooperative systems. ITITS 2017 received more than 200 papers from 4 countries, and the 65 accepted papers appear in this book, which will be of interest to all those involved with the development of intelligent transport systems.
