Book excerpt: Moses Roper (c. 1815-1891) was a mulatto slave who wrote one of the major early books about life as a slave in the United States - A Narrative of the Adventures and Escape of Moses Roper From American Slavery (1838). Moses was born in Caswell County, North Carolina. He grew up with his mother and was trained as a domestic slave until he was about seven years old when his father exchanged him and his mother for other slaves. Roper struggled tremendously when he was put to work in the fields and forests of the South-receiving harsher treatment for his inefficiency from his overseers and masters. Throughout his time in slavery, Moses attempted escape on at least 16 occasions, most of them while under his cruelest master, Mr. Gooch. He became quite famous in England because of his grand escape from American slavery and the book he later wrote about his life as a slave. In his book, he made sure to include explicit examples of the torture methods used by slave holders.

Book Synopsis Conversations with Kentucky Writers II by : Linda Elisabeth LaPinta
Download or read book Conversations with Kentucky Writers II written by Linda Elisabeth LaPinta and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to Conversations with Kentucky Writers, L. Elisabeth Beattie brings together in-depth interviews with sixteen of the state's premiere wordsmiths. This new volume offers the perspectives of poets, journalists, and scholars as they discuss their views on creativity, the teaching of writing, and the importance of Kentucky in their work. They talk frankly about how and why they do what they do. The writers speak for themselves, and their thoughts come alive on the page. Beattie's interviews reveal the allegiances and alliances among Kentucky writers that have shaped literary trends by bringing together people with shared interests, values, subjects, and styles. The interviewees include authors who are captivated in other writers and in what they have to say about the process and craft of writing; educators who are interested in Kentucky writers and what their work reveals about the nature of creativity; and historians who are concerned with Kentucky's literary and cultural heritage. The interviews reveal patterns in Kentucky literature from mid-century to the millennium, as authors talk about how their sense of place has changed over the decades and reveal the ways in which the roots of Kentucky writing have produced a literary flowering at the century's end. Includes: Sallie Bingham, Joy Bale Boone, Thomas D. Clark, John Egerton, Sarah Gorham, Lynwood Montell, Maureen Morehead, John Ed Pearce, Ameilia Blossom Pegram, Karen Robards, Jeffrey Skinner, Frederick Smock, Frank Steele, Martha Bennett Stiles, Richard Taylor, and Michael Williams.

Download or read book Escape From Religiosity written by C. S. Johnson and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in the Midwest, being born into a large family and having a nomadic father, caused my life to be one of great adventures. My father was a preacher and a jack of all trades. He was an inventor and entrepreneur. He could not look at an empty building without wanting to start a church or a business in it. Life with him was an education, and growing up as the youngest of twelve children set the stage for lots of fun and experiences. Although I did not set out to write a life story, I suppose this is kind of what it is. It seems I have spent most of my adult life trying to get free from the hypocrisy and man-made rules of organized religion and denominations. I consider myself predenominational. I endeavor to base my beliefs and my life on the teachings of Jesus and the early church. It has been a great struggle to Escape from Religiosity.

Book Synopsis The Greatest Escape by : David Balcom
Download or read book The Greatest Escape written by David Balcom and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Oh, if there were someone to tell us the history of that subtle feeling called solitude," mused the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. In The Greatest Escape, David Balcom answers that call, showing that solitude is an inevitable--yet vital and exciting--facet of our existence with a long, tumultuous past. He travels back in time to trace the spirit flights of shamans; wanders in the mountains of China, listening to the poetry of recluse scholars; visits the forests of India to participate in the dialogues of ancient sages; explores the wisdom of early Greek philosophers, Christian hermits, and Sufi mystics; and illuminates the role of solitude in the lives and writings of modern poets and intellectuals from Petrarch to Thoreau. Covering a broad swath of history, Balcom introduces us to powers and resources in solitude that are drowned in the clamor of modern life. He concludes that the experience of solitude can be creative, joyful, enlightening, sometimes all three at once--and that the perennial "fruits of solitude" are open to everyone. "Here," he writes, "is an apology for and a guide to the greatest of all escapes."

Book Synopsis Adventure, Mystery, and Romance by : John G. Cawelt
Download or read book Adventure, Mystery, and Romance written by John G. Cawelt and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-02-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first general theory for the analysis of popular literary formulas, John G. Cawelti reveals the artistry that underlies the best in formulaic literature. Cawelti discusses such seemingly diverse works as Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Dorothy Sayers's The Nine Tailors, and Owen Wister's The Virginian in the light of his hypotheses about the cultural function of formula literature. He describes the most important artistic characteristics of popular formula stories and the differences between this literature and that commonly labeled "high" or "serious" literature. He also defines the archetypal patterns of adventure, mystery, romance, melodrama, and fantasy, and offers a tentative account of their basis in human psychology.
