Book Synopsis Fisheries Development and Management in India, 1785-1986 by : Nune Subba Rao

This book was released on 1989 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries play an important role in the economy of nations bordering the sea and this is especially true in a populous country like India where a large majority continues to live below the poverty line. Sea fishing has been an occupation with the coastal people of India since time immemorial forming an integral part of the maritime heritage. Machanisation has been introduced into the marine fishing with a view to exploit the fisheries potential all along the Indian coastline of 6,500 km by overcoming the deficiencies of the centuries old traditional fishing technology and to augment fish production with a higher fishing effort and also to raise the income levels and living standards of fishermen. The present book, based on the author’s doctoral dissertation, made a bold and pioneering attempt to evaluate the costs and earnings of mechanised and traditional boats for determining their relative operational efficiency and to examine intensively the effects of mechanisation on employment, income levels, consumption pattern and levels of living of fishermen and their social implications. While analysing the merits of the new fishing technology and also the reactions of different groups of fishermen to mechanisation, he spotlights the shortsightedness in the implementation of the programme of mechanisation resulting in a host of negative effects which have implications and also sets forth the valuable lessons which Indian experiences have to offer to the densely populated littoral nations in the Third World. To ensure enduring benefits to the vast majority of marine fishermen, the thesis underscores, among numerous other remedies the need for the provision of an intermediary technology, the need for the institutional support and marketing network and the need for the management of fisheries resources. It also calls for the policies to bring about socio-economic development of the fishing community on par with the rest of the society. All in all, a genuine contribution to knowledge of `grassroots' situations that will have enduring value and that can be useful in both academic and policy-formation circles.

Book Synopsis Fisheries Exploitation in the Indian Ocean by : Dennis Rumley
Download or read book Fisheries Exploitation in the Indian Ocean written by Dennis Rumley and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2009 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to further the debate on the impacts of fisheries policies in the Indian Ocean Region in order to facilitate a new regional policy direction. A key argument of the volume is that ecologically sustainable and socially just development and management of Indian Ocean fisheries require a paradigm shift in the perceptions and policies of major stakeholders. A central policy challenge is to identify a collective regional interest for fisheries and accordingly the development of integrated management policies that link ecology and society and which incorporate individuals, communities, agencies, states and regimes into a holistic cooperative endeavour. Successful ocean governance therefore requires greater inter-state and inter-agency consultation and cooperation, an improvement in linking national initiatives to local action, increased participation of local government and local communities and the enhancement of local capability. In order to achieve this overall goal requires either the enhancement of existing regional institutions or the creation of a new regional body. Book Synopsis Fish Catching Methods of the World by : Andres von Brandt
Download or read book Fish Catching Methods of the World written by Andres von Brandt and published by Fishing News Books Limited. This book was released on 1984 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of Professor Von Brandt′s lifetime devotion to the study of fishing gears and catching methods from prehistoric times to the present. In it he shows how the main components of early methods – netting, lines, hooks, floats and sinkers – are still in common use even though their efficiency has been improved. His extensive travels have enabled him to include examples from many eras and many different parts of the world and his descriptions are enhanced by hundreds of illustrations. He describes gears in logical sequence from the most primitive gathering methods to the possible use of fully automated harvesting machines totally operated by computers. Also, he has developed a rational classification system for the multitude of fish devices and techniques. Although this has been done in a most scholarly way, the resultant text is alive with interesting anecdotes. This meticulously compiled edition will be invaluable to eveyone concerned with commercial fisheries as well as a delight to sport fishermen and all with an interest in fish or its capture.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Marine Fisheries Conservation and Management by : R. Quentin Grafton
Download or read book Handbook of Marine Fisheries Conservation and Management written by R. Quentin Grafton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is the most comprehensive and interdisciplinary work on marine conservation and fisheries management ever compiled. It is the first to bridge fisheries and marine conservation issues. Its innovative ideas, detailed case studies, and governance framework provide a global special perspective over time and treat problems in the high seas, community fisheries, industrial fishing, and the many interactions between use and non-use of the oceans. Its policy tools and ideas for overcoming the perennial problems of over fishing, habitat and biodiversity loss address the facts that many marine ecosystems are in decline and plagued by overexploitation due to unsustainable fishing practices. An outstanding feature of the book is the detailed case-studies on conservation practice and fisheries management from around the world. These case studies are combined with 'foundation' chapters that provide an overview of the state of the marine world and innovative and far reaching perspectives about how we can move forward to face present and future challenges. The contributors include the world's leading fisheries scientists, economists, and managers. Ecosystem and incentive-based approaches are described and complemented by tools for cooperative, participatory solutions. Unique themes treated: fisher behavior and incentives for management beyond rights-based approaches; a synthesis of proposed 'solutions'; a framework for understanding and overcoming the critical determinants of the decline in fisheries, degradation of marine ecosystems, and poor socio-economic performance of many fishing communities; models for innovative policy instruments; a plan of action and adoption pathways to promote sustainable fishing practices globally. Collectively, the handbook's many valuable contributions offer a way forward to both understanding and resolving the multifaceted problems facing the world's oceans.

Book Synopsis Review of the State of World Marine Capture Fisheries Management by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Review of the State of World Marine Capture Fisheries Management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first half of the 1990s, in response to the increasing concern about many of the world's fisheries, a number of international fisheries instruments provided an impetus for countries to strengthen their fisheries management. A key step in supporting such efforts is the development of more detailed, systematic and comparable information on fisheries environments and management trends. The State of World Marine Capture Fisheries Management Questionnaire was developed by FAO in 2004 to help meet this need. The results have been grouped by region and are reported in this publication. More than a decade later, we are able to look back to see how countries responded, to examine whether more fisheries are managed and to determine whether the management tools and strategies employed have improved the overall situation in marine capture fisheries. Trends in legal and administrative frameworks, management regimes and status of marine capture fisheries are analysed for 29 countries in the Pacific Ocean and presented in this report and on the accompanying CD-ROM as an easy-to-read and informative reference for policy decision-makers, fishery managers and stakeholders.

Book Synopsis The Blue Economy in Sub-Saharan Africa by : DONALD L. SPARKS
Download or read book The Blue Economy in Sub-Saharan Africa written by DONALD L. SPARKS and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blue economy, comprising coastal and marine resources, offers vast benefits for sub-Saharan Africa: of the 53 countries and territories in the region, 32 are coastal states; there are 13 million sq km of maritime zones; more than 90% of the region’s exports and imports come by sea; and the African Union hails the blue economy as the ‘new frontier of African renaissance’. Despite their importance, the region’s coastal and marine resources have been neither fully appreciated nor fully utilized. They are only now being recognized as being key to Africa’s potential prosperity. As the region grows, it has, in general, not taken adequate safeguards to protect these valuable resources. That is partly because some of the problems (pollution, for example) are regional and know no borders. All too often, short-term gains are made at the expense of the long term (overfishing, for example). This book provides, for the first time, a study of the constraints and opportunities the blue economy offers for sub-Saharan Africa. It includes an introduction and overview; sectoral analyses (including tourism, fisheries, mineral resources, culture, shipping and maritime safety); country case studies; and analyses of regional and international efforts towards better coastal zone and marine management.
