Love, Peace, and Soul tells the story of the television phenomenon known as Soul Train , a show created in the land of bell bottoms, afros, and soul power; a show that became the touchstone of the Baby Boomer generation. Don Cornelius, host and owner of the show, was one of the coolest cats on television. With his platform shoes, wide neckties, and mellifluous voice, he showed the world just how corny American Bandstand was in comparison. In 2012, fans were shocked to hear one of the most powerful men in the music and television business took his own life. Love, Peace, and Soul is a celebratory, behind-the-scenes collection of anecdotes, stories, and reflections, from the people who were there, about the host, the show, and the power of black music and dance on television. Music and television connoisseurs will enjoy the history of not just Soul Train , but of other shows, including Shindig! , Don Kirshner's Rock Concert , Hullabaloo , American Bandstand , and Graffiti Rock . Entrepreneurs will be interested in Cornelius' humble beginnings with the local version of the show in Chicago, created with his own money. Fans will delight in the lively images and the quirky details. The first mass market book on Soul Train since Cornelius's passing, this volume has something for everyone. Includes afterword by Gary Harris.

Book excerpt: What is the nature of intellectual activity in the Middle East, and what is its role in politics and society? While much scholarly attention has been given to the intelligentsia in the West, a comprehensive analysis of the social role of intellectuals in the Middle East has until now been lacking. This new book seeks to fill this gap, providing an overview of the role of influential thinkers in public life in the Middle East, and the impact they have had upon social, political and cultural spheres in the region. Covering a diverse range of key thinkers on the Middle East from Edward Said, Mohamed Arkoun and Halim Barakat to Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi and Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi, the book examines intellectuals' connections to social movements, 'street politics' and civil society, and democracy and its prospects in the region. This is an important new contribution to the literature on Middle Eastern societies and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was delivered to me in one word: separation. I felt it drop in my spirit like a coin. I asked in my meditation, ‘what about separation, what about it?’ The answer is what you have in your hands now, reading. The title: The Church. Homosexuality. Human rights., hardly made any complete sense to me until I was able to liaise it with the mother word, ‘separation’. The title is punctuated for a purpose: each of the three nouns is supposed to be a full, separate, and sovereign entity. I mean each is, because each exists. However, the reality of society and relationships challenges this persuasion and thus leaves the reader, even me, to figure out whether it’s worth any effort to marry these sovereign bodies or not. The writer’s style is passably argumentative; it is purposed to allow the reader release him/herself into the billowing wave of opinions and facts on the subject, so as to arrive at the shore of conviction that is very personal and independent in nature. One could agree or disagree with me when I say that the of the three bodies constituting the title, human rights cannot be recognized as a sovereign entity because it is owned by others- all humans for that matter. The same claim cannot be made for the remaining two: Church is a person(wife) and sovereign; homosexual is a person and sovereign. Human rights therefore exist only as the middleman mandated to oversee the peaceful coexistence of the two. But how is this ‘peaceful coexistence’ to be attained, rather organically? For a start, the middleman has asked the church and the homosexual to move a step away from entrenched positions, identities, and ideologies to the common floor of ‘united sovereigns’. ‘Tolerance is the only way out’, says the middleman. But will the two commit to this tolerance method, or like some contracting states of the UN, will they resort to the game of unfaithfulness (it’s human right when it suits us, and when it’s convenient.) to get by? Whatever your view, whatever your prevailing conviction, whatever your deeply held belief, and whatever your well-thought through stance regarding the marriage of the two sovereigns, that, is what this book in essence is about: taking a stand!

Book excerpt: Zafra Lerman was precocious as a little girl growing up in Israel. She grew up with deep-seeded values—values so deeply held that they became ingrained in her being. These values led her to dedicate her life to using science diplomacy to fight for peace and for human rights. She also developed a new curriculum, where she taught science through art, music, dance, and drama. This curriculum was successful with underprivileged students around the world. This book is a genre-busting first-person narrative in which Prof. Lerman recounts her remarkable life—a life that has led her all around the world from the Soviet Union to Peru, from China to Cuba, and beyond where she fought for dissidents who were being denied basic human rights. And, perhaps most importantly, her life has led her to Malta, the first site of the Malta Conferences. After the September 11 attacks on the United States, Prof. Lerman conceived, coordinated, and launched the Malta Conferences—the biennial, international meetings of scientists from all Middle East countries, Nobel laureates, and political leaders—which use science diplomacy as a bridge to peace in the Middle East. The book is an inspiring call to action showing how the author’s life and work has led to the innovative use of science as diplomacy in the fight for human rights and peace. It is an inspiration to educators, scientists, policymakers, and the general readers. There is no equivalent, competing work.

Taking a close look at the eastern and the western perceptions of music therapy, it views the Margi tradition of music and its origin in the Veda. Further explaining the archetypal, historical and living singer effect, with special focus on Rama, Krishna, Tyagaraja, Meera, Yesudas and Subbalaxmi, it discusses at length the origins of the desi (local) tradition of India with Matanga's Brihaddesi. Also, it presents an inter-disciplinary comparative study of both modern and ancient concepts of astronomy, Yoga, psychology, medicine, music, philosophy and cultural heritage."

Book excerpt: In these days of global crisis, thoughtful seekers increasingly turn to Native Americans for healing wisdom. The Sacred Pipe is the medicine, says Jay Cleve in this informative and practical guide to a key practice of Native American spirituality. The Hopi and other ancient cultures predicted our present age as one of transition into a New World. The galactic alignment ending the Mayan calendar on December 21, 2012 occurs only every 26,000 years and is thought to be a critical time for raising consciousness to align with the radical expansion of Earth energies. Cleve shows how the Pipe can facilitate transformation on both the personal and planetary levels. He explains its use in rituals such as the sweat lodge, the vision quest, and the sun dance and in relation to the Medicine Wheel. He also provides practical information on obtaining and caring for a Pipe and on preparing for and performing the Pipe ceremony.
