Book excerpt: Malaria control and eradication have achieved noteworthy successes in such diverse areas as Venezuela and Taiwan. However, in many portions of the world malaria control has reached a state of stagnation and even retreat. The reasons are manifold but in the main arise from problems which have been evident in the biology of the parasite and the anopheline vector. The discovery of resistance to drugs and insecticides serves to amplify these problems. Breakdowns of antimalaria programs based on vector control have been especially serious in Africa. It is not always clear why these campaigns fail or what can be done about it now. Prospects for future control may improve provided further research is accomplished. As a means of delineating the present status of the biology and control of malaria vectors and providing a platform for the discussion of areas for further study which may provide practical means of interrupting transmission by controlling or eradicating the vector, a Conference on Anopheline Biology and Malaria Eradication was organized. It is hoped that the recommendations which developed from this conference will stimulate further entomological research along those channels which appeared to be most promising to the conferees.

Book excerpt: This is a history which deals with the end of the Dutch colonial rule, the early independent Indonesia, the West New Guinea question, and the emergence of Papuan nationalism. The book chiefly concentrates on Dutch policies ands perspectives, which have so far generally been ignored in existing English language publications. Netherlands-Indonesian relations between 1950 and 1958 are treated in depth, with a description and analysis of the struggle for power between the early, more Western-attuned and economic-rationalist cabinets, on the support of which the fate of the vast Netherlands-controlled export economy was dependent, and the masses, driven by Sukarno and the populist parties. West New Guinea and Papua nationalism began as early as the 1920s and 1930s, and by the early 1950s the Dutch had set about guiding the Papuans towards independence. This policy had to be aborted, however, with the threat of an Indonesian invasion and the unwillingness of the US to provide armed support to Dutch forces. As a result, Australia, too, was reluctantly forced to abandon the Dutch. Australia was forced to accept the inevitable. It had actively encouraged the Netherlands to hold onto West New Guinea, completed agreements on economic and social cooperation, and conducted in-depth studies about a possible Australia-Dutch defence system against Indonesian aggression. Without US military support, however, the situation became untenable. This book will be required for those seeking to understand the genesis of the situation in West New Guinea today, where Papuan nationalism is again in the ascendant following the recent dramatic events leading to the independence of East Timor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell, Tanya L. and Burkot, Thomas R. 2023. A guide to mosquitoes in the Pacific. Pacific Community, Noumea. The Pacific is home to 11.4 million people residing in 22 countries and territories across the region. Recently, the Pacific has been experiencing unprecedented outbreaks of dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus alongside ongoing malaria and lymphatic filariasis transmission with direct effects on morbidity and mortality. The ongoing transmission of mosquito-borne diseases places a heavy toll on already fragile health systems with local economic and social repercussions. This handbook provides practical and basic biological information on the behaviours and distribution of the mosquitoes of the Pacific region as they are presently known. This handbook is a foundational reference for all those working towards reducing the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases in the region. An overview of the diversity and distribution of mosquitoes throughout the Pacific, including checklists for the species present in each of the 22 Pacific Island countries and territories, is provided. For the mosquitoes that are common and/or of medical importance, one-page profiles are provided that include information about their key behaviours.

Book excerpt: Anopheles mosquitoes are highly important insects due to their involvement in the transmission of human malaria and its devastating consequences in endemic countries worldwide. In 2010 alone, malaria was responsible for an estimated 660,000 deaths. As the study of Anopheles species and populations is a key element for reaching the goal of malaria elimination, an enormous amount of information has accumulated over the past century, and together in recent decades with the advent of novel technologies the acquisition of new knowledge has accelerated even further. The originality of this book is to offer the latest compilation on various research, new concepts, paradigms and innovative approaches for the control of anophelines using state-of-the-art methodologies and analysis. The 24 chapters, written by internationally recognized experts from 5 continents, cover the rich landscape for the understanding of Anopheles mosquitoes and the development of more effective weapons to control the vector of malaria.

Book excerpt: "The spread of parasitic diseases is a problem which faces most of the developing countries of the world. Many of the parasites of man do not cause obvious disease, but they do cause continual poor health. This book presents a study of the important parasites of man in Niugini. Its purpose is to achieve a scientific understanding of the causes of many of the parasitic diseases which afflict man, and to dispel the idea of witchcraft as the source and cure of these ailments. No disease-carrying parasite can be conquered unless man interferes with its life cycle. This can only be achieved when a large proportion of the population knows where, when, and how to do so effectively. Not only scientists, doctors, field and laboratory technicians and students, but all the people in the country must co-operate to understand and combat these diseases. The authors have outlined areas where future research should be carried out. A large part of the book is devoted to a study of malaria, an ever-present problem in Niugini. The high incidence of malaria causes continual poor health and decreased productivity. The information contained in this book is of local interest and is written in a language which can be easily understood by most people."--BOOK JACKET.
