Built in 1818 by John Brockenbrough, the mansion at Twelfth and Clay streets was home to some of Richmond's leading citizens. The building was thrust into prominence in 1861 when the city of Richmond purchased it to be used as the executive mansion for Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America. For nearly four years the White House of the Cnfederacy was a political and social center, as well as a family home. With the collapse of the Confederacy in April 1865, the bulding became headquarters for the United States army that occupied Richmond.
