A few days after this incident, a group of seven concerned citizens gathered around a kitchen table at the home of Ed Franckewich. Thus Harbor City Volunteer Ambulance Squad (HCVAS) began and served South Brevard for thirty-three years until its dissolution on September 30, 1999. This is its pictoral history.

Simmons wrote: "Today's generation of Marines serve in a fully integrated Corps where blacks constitute almost one-fifth of our strength. Black officers, noncommissioned officers, and privates are omnipresent, their service so normal a part of Marine life that it escapes special notice. MacGregor, Jr.'s Integration of the Armed Forces 1940-1965 (Washington, D.C.: U.S. Army Center of Military History, 1981) that documents the Armed Forces efforts as part of the Defense Studies Series. It is also the only land battle in which Japanese and American forces fought in Arctic conditions. The more than two-week battle ended when most of the Japanese defenders were killed in brutal hand-to-hand combat after a final banzai charge broke through American lines.
