Book excerpt: Electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback, also called neurobiofeedback or neurofeedback therapy, has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment to correct neuronal misfiring for a variety of disorders, including some complex symptomatology characteristic of autism. Autism is a serious life-long neurological developmental disability with unknown etiology that has complex and varied symptomatology in three primary dimensions of impairment: (1) qualitative impairment in reciprocal social interaction; (2) impairment in communication and imaginative activity; and, (3) markedly restricted repertoire of activities and interests. Many children with autism are highly attuned or even painfully sensitive to certain sounds, textures, tastes, and smells. Parents of children with autism are faced with the possibility of parenting a child who may need constant supervision all of his or her life. Meanwhile the daily life experiences of managing the manifest behaviors characteristic of the diagnosis provide a lived reality that any family would call "a nightmare." A qualitative research design of the phenomenological tradition has been employed to investigate differences in the lived experiences of mothers of children with autism who have undergone neurofeedback treatment. The vivid descriptions provided by the mothers investigated demonstrate that, in fact, the practice of neurofeedback therapy has made a profound and positive difference in the complex varied symptomatology of autism of the children in this study; the daily lives of these children with autism and the lives of their family members have been dramatically affected.

Book excerpt: Franziska Eller investigated the effectiveness of individualized Neurofeedback training in addition to a comprehensive basic neurodevelopmental therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The results clearly speak for the benefits of a supplemental Neurofeedback training, since QEEG recordings revealed positive changes in the children’s brain wave activity after only a few weeks of training. Furthermore behavioral aspects and imitation abilities were assessed using two autism questionnaires and an imitation test. Results showed that all children improved in several domains, with the treatment group partly achieving greater changes than the control group. Unlike the most prevalent therapy methods that are mainly behavior-based, Neurofeedback training aims at improving abnormal brain wave activity and thereby establishes an alternative, promising approach to treat Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Book excerpt: Lived experiences have become increasingly significant within research in mental health, particularly for working on service reforms from a human rights perspective. The vulnerabilities within which women are positioned in a patriarchal society is further deepened by the extensive responsibility placed on her as she navigates motherhood. While traversing this role, meeting the challenges of early parenting, in addition to balancing her authentic self and her choices with that of her attachment with the child and family, she is also expected to ensure that the child meets the norms of development as set by the society. In such a scenario, when the child gets a diagnosis of autism, - that comes with no known single cause or cure, and with myriad interventions and approaches, the experiences of mothers of children with autism stand out from that of other mothers. Their experiences of vulnerability and of overcoming the same in the Indian context, along each phase of their journey with their child, forms the basis of this thesis. It aims to answer the question of how lived experiences of mothers of children with autism can be understood and supported so as to enable sustainable long-term solutions. The experiences were studied in four phases of her journey: From birth to noticing first differences, during the diagnostic process, early intervention, and further during the whole schooling phase. Findings show how the experiential knowledge of mothers of autistic children, despite their importance and prominence, is often not included in the rehabilitation process, in the context of Southern India. It is shown how vulnerability is a construct that is compounded and acts within multiple layers which include the lack of knowledge and lack of coordinated and collective support systems. It shows how the existing support predominantly focus on fitting the child into a ‘norm’ that most often disregards the dignity of the mother and the child, leading to human rights violations a

Mothers do find it an important activity to reaching a variety of skills including social skills. Since mothers with sons with autism find it an enjoyable experience, it lends itself to being a beneficial training setting. By using video modeling, a well-established intervention, parents can quickly learn skills to promote social skill development in contrast to the more time-intensive traditional approaches to parent-mediated interventions.."--Chapter 11
