Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the factors that influence young adults' (aged 18 to 24) reading experiences, reading habits and behavior, and desire to read. Three research questions guided this study: (a) How do young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 describe the factors that influence their reading experiences? (b) How do participants describe the effect of factors on their reading habits and behavior? (c) How do participants describe the effect of factors on their personal desire to read? Participants included young adults between the ages of 18 and 24. Data collection methods included an Adult Reading Motivation Scale, individual interviews, and a focus group interview. Data analysis methods included bracketing, horizonalization, establishing patterns, textural description, structural description, and describing the essence of participants' experiences. Findings yielded the emerging four themes: (a) The factor of the self in conjunction with reading experiences, (b) The factor of other people in conjunction with reading experiences, (c) The factor of teaching and learning in conjunction with reading experiences, and (d) The factor of forced reading.

Book excerpt: This research presents a phenomenological study of readers who participated in a community reading program. It examines participatory education in the context of a community reading project hosted by a public library. Narrative interviews, observation, and document analysis were used to find the meaning of participation and reading for the literacy students and other program participants and instrumentalists. The study is theoretically informed by critical studies in education and society. Interviews indicated that the students in this study have had past negative experiences with education. They said that the literacy classroom was a positive step in ameliorating those past experiences. During this project, the students engaged in group reading and the discussion of literary fiction. Public library systems across the nation have followed Seattle's celebrated "Seattle Reads" project by inviting the city to read and discuss a book. One purpose of these programs is to strengthen community ties and to create a sense of universal understanding through the discussion of literary fiction. The literacy students in this study participated in such a program. This study utilized phenomenological methods in order to find the meaning of participation in a community reading project for two major groups: program instrumentalists, and new and experienced readers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological case study is to explore the reading attitudes and decision-making skills of college freshmen enrolled in remedial language arts courses. The theoretical framework guiding this study is qualitative phenomenology explained by Baxter and Jack (2008). This specific type of research “provides tools for researchers to study complex phenomena within their contexts” and the findings help researchers evaluate program, design, and intervention methods, which is pertinent to the discovery of prevailing reading attitudes among struggling students and allows researchers to prevent, adjust, and improve these attitudes in future students (Baxter and Jack, 2008; Yin, 2003). This phenomenological case study utilizes questionnaire, direct observation, and interviews to collect data about eleven college freshmen enrolled in developmental language arts courses in northeast Georgia; the information collected using multiple data sources is subjected to open-coding and two-tiered coding and is then free imaginative variation is used to interpret the information found in field notes, questionnaires, and interviews. The analysis of data showed that lack of parental involvement, poor K-12 learning experiences, misconception of the term “good reader,” a sense of loss or lack of direction, disinterest in reading, and reading as punishment were themes common across multiple cases. By examining the reading attitudes and experiences of these participants, parents and educators can better assess the best way to address reading motivation and decision-making problems and help future students become better readers and thereby, better learners.

However, gaining an understanding of key the factors that motivate or hinder Bible reading among adult Christians, and developing strategies to reverse this trend through preaching and Christian Education, is an area of the research that was sparsely addressed by the precedent literature. As a result, the purpose of this study is to help pastors and Christian educators better understand the motivating factors that influence regular Bible reading and to propose action steps that can increase Bible reading among the Body of Christ. This study follows a qualitative and phenomenological research design. It is based upon the Bible reading experiences of six adult, Christian, research participants selected from the locales of central California and Norfolk, Virginia. Each research participant completed a single Bible reading questionnaire about their Bible reading beliefs and practices. The results of this study revealed that motivation to read the Bible is significantly influenced by the positive, personal, experience that the reader gains from engaging the teachings of the Scripture. Reading the Bible with others was also found to be crucial to maintaining Bible readership. In contrast, the key hindrance to regular Bible reading was the perceived lack of time created by life and work responsibilities. Based on these motivating factors, this research provides targeted recommendations to help foster regular Bible reading through both preaching and Christian education.

My hypothesis was that Internet users who seek text material online will have a higher reading motivation score. Participants were asked to answer questions from Schutte and Malouff's (2007) Adult Reading Motivation Scale, to estimate the hours they spend reading and on the Internet per week, and to rate fictional websites. Reading Motivation was greater for those who chose educational-text websites as their top preference than those who chose non-educational visual content as their top website preference. There was also a positive significant relationship between leisure hours spent reading and leisure hours spent on the Internet. Future research should investigate the relationship between time spent on the Internet and time spent reading.

Book excerpt: The goal of this phenomenological research study was to explore the helpfulness of self-help reading. The main research question was: What about the experience of self-help reading during a difficult life situation is helpful to the self-guided, adult reader? Several subquestions were also explored. Six female participants completed a series of semi-structured interviews. The interviews were coded and analyzed using an adaptation of Colaizzi's (1978) 9-step analysis for phenomenological research. Themes from the data analysis suggest there is a distinct structure to the helpfulness of self-help reading, which is comprised of four major categories: (a) thinking and feeling dimensions to self-help reading, (b) self-help reading as a medium for re-visioning of self, (c) what readers bring to the self-help reading experience, and (d) contexts for the self-help reading experience. There is a dual nature to the helpfulness of self-help reading as self-help reading has both head and heart knowledge. In addition, as the reader progresses through reading phases, the reader engages in a process of self-change, or a re-visioning of self. Self-help reading provides an opportunity for the reader to develop a sense of hope that self-change is possible. The reader also gains a greater understanding of self and situation, reevaluates the self relative to the situation, and makes a choice and a commitment to carry out change. Finally, the reader is connected to a larger community of helping relationships and brings certain characteristics and perspectives to the self-help reading experience. As this particular structure to self-help reading is not found elsewhere in the research literature, the research findings contribute to understanding the experience of self-help reading. The findings have implications for the practice of self-help reading. Limitations to the research study were examined and suggestions for future research were provided.

Book excerpt: Current educational policy in the United States supports the standardization of school curricula and promotes a high-stakes testing culture that reinforces the ideologies of market fundamentalism. This accountability movement has resulted in school curriculum that aims to transcend children's diverse lived experiences and the local contexts in which those experiences are made meaningful. In elementary schools in particular, these policies have also led to the decrease of aesthetic activities that nurture children's social, emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing, such as music education, art education, physical education, the social studies, unstructured playtime and pleasure reading. Place-based educators have pushed back against these trends by advocating for curricula that promotes permeability between the physical and conceptual boundaries of children's school, home and community contexts and emphasizes project-based instructional design that meaningfully connects to children's everyday lived experiences. While research in children's literature and literacy education recognizes the important role that reading can play in rooting children in the world they are coming to know, place-based educators have not thoroughly explored the relationship between children's identities as readers and their identities as place-makers. Designed as a phenomenological inquiry, this study explored five adults' experiences of place within their childhood literacy life-world, or reading landscape. By studying adults, this project aimed to describe and interpret the role children's literature and childhood reader identity might play in one's development as a place-maker in middle childhood (approximately ages six to thirteen), as well as the meaning these experiences hold in adulthood. The findings have significant implications for place-based curricula, suggesting that children engage in dynamic transactions with out-of-school places as they enact their emerging identity as independent readers and that these experiences contribute to how they see the world and themselves into adulthood.
